19 June - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern

00:00Hi there, many places have seen lively weather this weekend and outbreaks of rain will continue
00:06to affect much of the UK into Monday, but as is always the case with thunderstorms and
00:12showers not everyone will see one. And the main area of activity is now clearing to the
00:17north, Northern Ireland as well as North and North West Scotland staying damp through Monday
00:21but the heaviest rain here now clearing. However, further showers will develop for Northern
00:26Ireland, Central and Southern Scotland where these showers will be heavy with the risk
00:29of thunder and hail and for Northern Ireland 20-25mm of rain in an hour could cause some
00:34disruption but again these are hit and miss showers so it's a risk of thunderstorms and
00:39not a guarantee even where you've got a yellow warning. Now for much of England and Wales
00:42it's a much drier day with plenty of sunny spells breaking through but even across Central
00:47and Mid Wales into Northern England there'll be some showers around, these again will be
00:52hit and miss but in the south I think mostly dry with highs of 25, 26, perhaps even 27
00:59Celsius, still a very warm day for the time of year. Now the rain in the north of Scotland
01:04clears through overnight, the showers elsewhere die away but then our attention turns to this
01:09area of rain that's moving up from the south, thundery rain in places most likely towards
01:13the east of the area and it's going to be a mild or even muggy night in places with
01:19temperatures generally in the mid-teens where we've got the cloud and rain in the south
01:22and low-teens further north. Clear spells though for Northern Ireland, Scotland and
01:27Northern England as we start off Tuesday, plenty of sunshine first thing but the rain
01:31in the south it journeys northwards into much of Wales, the Midlands and then into Northern
01:37England. As that moves north, leading to a damp afternoon for Northern England and then
01:42eventually southeastern Scotland, well some sunshine will break out elsewhere but also
01:48further thundery downpours, north-west Scotland, Northern Ireland but also Wales and the south-west.
01:54However, there is a risk that some really significant thunderstorms could develop across
01:59parts of East Anglia, the south-east and into parts of Lincolnshire. Now there's not a guarantee
02:04of these storms developing but if they do occur, 40mm or more of rainfall in the space
02:09of an hour could cause some significant impact so certainly a focus for that later in the
02:15afternoon. But it's a very warm day where we see the sunshine temperatures reaching
02:19the mid-20s in the south-east, even up to 29C if we see enough sunshine in a few spots.
02:26Not as warm as it has been further west and north but still high-teens, low-20s for many.
02:32Then it's Tuesday evening, the showers and thunderstorms that potentially develop in
02:36places eventually ease away but the area of rain across eastern Scotland continues to
02:43push northwards and that's going to reach Orkney as well as Caithness and Aberdeenshire
02:48by the evening. That pulls away and then another showery day expected on Wednesday, hit and
02:54miss downpours once again and perhaps even a few showers on Thursday. But the general
02:58trend through the rest of the week is for higher pressure to build once again from the
03:03south-west. Now that will lead to drier and sunnier conditions for many although north-western
03:08areas expected to still stay changeable with some low-pressure influence from the Atlantic.
03:13However as that sunshine redevelops and as some warmer air drifts across the UK from
03:18the south-west, temperatures will rise and by the end of the week in some spots they'll
03:23approach 30C once again. That's all for me but of course you can stay up to date by following
03:28the Met Office on social media and make sure you watch the week ahead forecast later on
03:32Monday on YouTube.
