00:00Hello, George II's description of the UK summer as three fine days and a thunderstorm
00:04is fairly apt for this week. We've had a couple of fine days so far, a couple more
00:09before the increased threat of heavy showers arrives later this week and into the weekend
00:15along with much cooler conditions. We've seen one or two showers today and could be
00:19another shower or two over the east of Scotland overnight. But eventually they fade away and
00:25actually the cloud breaks up across central and eastern Scotland with plenty of clear
00:29spells for England and Wales. But despite the clear skies and the light winds, temperatures
00:33not falling in many places into the single figures. So we're looking at a slightly warmer
00:37night compared to the last couple. But we keep the cloud for north-west Scotland, northern
00:42Ireland a dull and damp start in places here, particularly around the Western Isles, the
00:47West Highlands as well. We keep that cloud into the afternoon here but eastern Scotland,
00:53northern England a much sunnier day to come compared with Tuesday and plenty of sunshine
00:57remains for the southern half of the UK as well, just fair weather cloud building through
01:02the day. And with those sunnier conditions in the north-east, temperatures respond a
01:06big jump compared to the last couple of days up towards the mid-20s in some favoured spots.
01:12But 28C, the UK maximum, somewhere around London or just to the north of the capital,
01:18much cooler towards the north-west with the breeze, the thicker cloud and those outbreaks
01:22of mainly light rain and drizzle. And that continues in the north-west on Wednesday night
01:27whilst clear spells, well, prevail elsewhere across the UK. One thing you might notice
01:34are some heavy showers over the near continents starting to drift north. But through the hours
01:40of darkness, most likely staying away. And it's a mild or even muggy night in places,
01:46for example Cardiff not dropping below 16C. Plenty of sunshine then from the Woodgow
01:52across much of England and Wales. Eastern Scotland as well, thicker cloud for western
01:55Scotland. Parts of northern England seeing that cloud come and go. Northern Ireland as
01:59well, generally cloudier but brightening up through the day. However, those showers I
02:04mentioned, well, they could make an appearance across southern parts of England and south
02:09Wales by Thursday afternoon. Some heavy showers, even the odd thunderstorm possible but a lot
02:15of uncertainty about these showers, if they occur and where they would arrive. So that's
02:20something to keep a close eye on. If they do occur, of course, they'll have an impact
02:24on temperatures in the south and that means it may be parts of the Midlands into northern
02:28England where we see the highest temperatures on Thursday, mid to possibly high 20s, somewhere
02:33like Yorkshire could get a 29C inland from the coast. 23 in eastern Scotland, another
02:39warm day here but low 20s or even mid teens elsewhere across Scotland and northern Ireland.
02:46This area of rain here, well that is a cold front which is likely to make a considerable
02:51change to our weather later Friday and into the weekend. Ahead of it, the air turns more
02:56unstable, so an increased threat on Friday of some heavy showers developing, particularly
03:00across eastern areas, whilst more persistent wet weather arrives into the west. And that
03:05wet weather sweeps across the country to usher in cooler and more changeable weather this
03:10weekend, a mixture of sunshine and showers.
