22 September - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00Hi there, it's been a fine Wednesday for many with some bright spells but certainly a lot
00:05of dry weather. But in the north and west of Scotland a different story. Outbreaks of
00:09rain have been moving in here and that rain will turn heavier and steadier through the
00:14evening and overnight as these weather fronts push in from the northwest. Eventually those
00:19weather fronts will cross the whole of the country but it's going to take a couple of
00:22days and ahead of the front some clear spells for England and Wales overnight with light
00:27winds in place. Temperatures will fall away and a few mist and fog patches are expected
00:31but for Scotland and Northern Ireland the winds pick up, the cloud thickens and outbreaks
00:35of rain push through. The rain heaviest over the hills of western Scotland and it's going
00:41to be a mild night because of all of that weather taking place in the north whilst further
00:45south temperatures falling below 10 degrees in many places and some of those fog patches
00:50persisting until around mid-morning. But eventually those fog patches lift. A bright day to come
00:57then for the southern half of the UK. Areas of cloud still hanging around so it's not
01:01going to be entirely sunny and certainly the cloud will thicken as these weather fronts
01:06push south and it's going to turn out to be a wet day for northern England, for north
01:10and west Wales and a breezy day at that as well. So feeling cool under that band of rain
01:15but skies do brighten for much of Scotland north of the central belt and for parts of
01:19Northern Ireland as well later in the day with just a few scattered showers returning
01:24here and it's going to be a warm day in the south whilst it's going to feel significantly
01:29cooler elsewhere. The rain tumbles its way southwards during Thursday night, it takes
01:35its time, there will be some heavier bursts at times as well but it does clear from the
01:40north and the west eventually with a few showers around western shores but otherwise plenty
01:45of clear spells and a cool night to come in the north compared with the last couple of
01:50nights so it's going to be a bit on the fresh side on Friday in the north with some bright
01:56spells around. Otherwise the rain pushes into south-east England and it turns to showers
02:02and there will be some heavy downpours I think, even some more prolonged rain in places during
02:06Friday towards the south-east but otherwise for many it's a day of sunny spells and scattered
02:12showers with those showers coming in on a cooler north-westerly airflow and really we
02:18keep that north-westerly airflow through the weekend, it's going to hold those temperatures
02:23back compared with recent days, mid to high teens in the north, high teens generally further
02:28south and turning even colder for the start of next week as another cold front arrives
02:33and northerly winds push across the whole of the UK. Much more on that in the 10-day
02:39trend which you'll be able to find on the Met Office YouTube channel.
