17 June - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00The heat peaks today across much of England and Wales but not all areas have seen this hot weather.
00:07Certainly across Scotland and Northern Ireland it's been a cloudy and wet start to the day
00:11and those outbreaks of rain during the rest of the day sink into parts of Northern England
00:16so Cumbria is seeing some persistent wet weather but the front is tending to fizzle.
00:20And brighter skies return to the central belt to much of the rest of Scotland, Northern Ireland as well.
00:26Sunny spells one or two showers in the far north-west.
00:28However, to the south of the front that's where the real heat is.
00:32A bit of a breeze will help to stir the air up and avoid even higher temperatures
00:37but still above 30 Celsius is possible across a large part of East Wales into central and southern England
00:44and 34 Celsius is possible somewhere to the north of London, for example Cambridgeshire or parts of East Anglia and Lincolnshire.
00:52So unusually high temperatures for June, not record breaking
00:55and that heat stays with southern parts of the UK overnight
01:00so a sultry night to come in the south with clear spells.
01:03The weather front I mentioned, a cold front, comes to a halt across Northern England, parts of Wales.
01:09Just cloud here really, the rain having eased away.
01:12And to the north again, a much fresher night to come compared with the south.
01:16We're looking at single figures for parts of central and northern Scotland
01:18a blustery breeze and showers for the north-west Highlands as well as for the Western Isles.
01:23But it's in the south where it will be an uncomfortable night for sleeping, 15 to 17 Celsius by dawn.
01:29A bright start for the far south but by Saturday morning that's the position of the cold front
01:35and it marks a significant temperature contrast across the country.
01:38We keep the heat in the far south but with that temperature contrast,
01:43with low pressure moving up from the south-west, the front will start to become reactive
01:48and heavy rain will develop across parts of Wales.
01:51Initially mid Wales into the Midlands through Saturday morning
01:54and by the afternoon an area of wet weather extends through these central zones
01:58perhaps fringing into northern parts of Devon and Cornwall and even parts of Northern England.
02:04To the north of that, some brighter skies, a fine day for much of Scotland and Northern Ireland.
02:10Temperatures into the mid to high teens although a keen breeze will make it feel cool
02:14with some showers for the north-west of Scotland.
02:16And to the south, another hot day.
02:18In fact, for the far south coast it could be hotter because the winds will have changed direction
02:23and we'll still see 30 Celsius in the far south, somewhere like Southampton.
02:28A cooler day for London with a bit more cloud around but still feeling hot enough.
02:33And then later on, as this front starts to move south,
02:37we'll see perhaps some showers or thunderstorms develop to the south-east
02:41and we'll also see those heavy outbreaks of rain push south into south Wales,
02:46the rest of the south-west as well.
02:49Showers continue further north-west and again it stays cool here.
02:53Could be some lively showers in the far south and south-east on Sunday,
02:56even the odd rumble of thunder.
02:58Brighter skies further north with some sunny spells as temperatures return closer to average.
