19 May - National weather forecast for Thursday presented by Aidan McGivern

00:00Hi there. Some very lively weather last night. Some of you may have been woken up by thunderstorms.
00:06An awful lot of them occurred over the continent and spilled into southern and southeastern
00:11parts of England. Initially through the evening, a spell of rain into the west and then this
00:15plume of thundery activity, very frequent lightning strikes for some southern and southeastern
00:20parts of the UK, further storms coming up there during the morning for the far southeast.
00:26But they're moving out of the way and so that by the afternoon, for the vast majority,
00:30it's drier, it's brighter, sunny spells emerging. One or two showers coming through from a legacy
00:36of cloud there for the central and southern parts of the UK. But the more cloudy skies
00:42affecting Western Scotland, Northern Ireland, a few showers here and a bit more of a breeze.
00:47But for the vast majority, we're looking at sunny spells, light winds and feeling pleasant
00:52enough in that sunshine with temperatures reaching the low 20s, 23 Celsius there in
00:57the southeast, similar values to Wednesday. Then through the evening, clear spells for
01:03a time for England, for Wales, for eastern and southern Scotland. The cloud will thicken
01:09once again for Western Scotland, for parts west of Northern Ireland later and some outbreaks
01:15of showery rain, mainly affecting the Outer Hebrides but perhaps the far northwest of
01:20the mainland of Scotland. Elsewhere, a lot of clouds starting to spill in from the continent
01:27but most places staying dry by dawn and temperatures not falling far, looking at 9 to 12 Celsius
01:35as we start the day. But there is another plume of heat over the near continent and
01:40that will spark some thundery activity. At the moment, it looks likely to mostly stay
01:45away from the UK this time but it will spread an area of mainly light rain into central
01:50southern England and then that will move southeastwards through the morning, developing a bit more
01:55widely I think. So a spell of rain there for East Anglia in the southeast, some heavy rain
01:59in the far southeast but mostly I think the thunderstorms will stay over the near continent.
02:04And then further showers, outbreaks of rain moving in from the west through the afternoons
02:09and heavy downpours in places interspersed by bright spells. Certainly a fresher feel,
02:14quite a blustery wind near those showers and temperatures up to 17 to 19 Celsius generally.
02:21Those showers move through during the evening, longer spells of rain there for parts of Scotland
02:25and northern England but eventually clear spells emerge overnight and then actually
02:31Saturday is looking drier and brighter for many, particularly further south. There will
02:36still be a few showers in the north and then further showers or outbreaks of rain to come
02:40on Sunday.
