00:00Welcome to your latest national weather update from the Met Office.
00:04Saturday cloudy and mild, Sunday looking much brighter and just a touch colder.
00:10Here's the bigger picture, the pressure pattern showing high pressure controlling our weather.
00:15We do have weather front straddling the country.
00:17This is called a warm sector and there's mild air in between these two weather fronts.
00:22That's why it's so mild at the moment.
00:24But behind this cold front, as you might imagine, there's some colder air.
00:28And that cold front is just creeping towards us as we head into the weekend.
00:33But it's not with us on Friday night.
00:35We're still in the mild air, those weather front straddling the UK.
00:38Some rain across Shetland, but that's ebbing away.
00:41Some drizzle at times around western coasts and hills, but most places just dry and cloudy.
00:47That clouds and the mild air keeping the temperatures up through the night.
00:51Most of us will start the weekend at 7, 8, 9 degrees Celsius.
00:55In eastern parts of England, we could see some longer clear spells,
00:58which may allow temperatures to drop a little further.
01:01But generally a pretty mild start to Saturday.
01:04Mild, but drab with a lot of cloud around.
01:07Much of England and Wales will stay that way through the day.
01:10Still some drizzle here and there on western coasts and hills.
01:13But here comes that weather front, meaning a bit more in the way of persistent rain
01:16across the western side of Scotland by lunchtime.
01:19Pushing down through the central belt, moving across Northern Ireland as well.
01:23Not particularly heavy, but a few hours of damp weather for sure.
01:27Won't be a very great day across the mountains of Scotland.
01:30The far northwest and the western Northern Ireland may cheer up a little bit late in the day.
01:35For England and Wales, as I said, most places here dry through daylight hours.
01:39A few breaks in the cloud are possible to reveal a hint of sunshine, a bit of blue sky.
01:43And it will be a mild day for most places, 10, 11, 12, maybe even 13 Celsius.
01:49As the rain clears, it will start to turn quite cold quite quickly across the far northwest.
01:54Now that rain will push into Northern England and North Wales during Saturday evening.
01:59So bear that in mind if you're heading out.
02:01Again, nothing too heavy.
02:02And notice as the rain band slips further south, it really does fizzle out.
02:06So no more than the odd spot as it crosses parts of southern England.
02:10And it does pass and clear away, revealing clearer skies and colder air.
02:15Remember, it's a cold front.
02:16So temperatures dropping much lower as we head into Sunday morning.
02:20A blue hue on the map, a frost for rural parts of Wales, northern England,
02:24and even towns and cities dropping below freezing across Scotland and Northern Ireland.
02:28So a much colder start, a very different day on Sunday.
02:32But it will be a cracking winter's day.
02:34This area of high pressure pushing that weather front further and further away.
02:39And then the high just kind of ensconced across the UK, sitting firmly over us during Sunday,
02:46keeping the weather fronts at bay.
02:47The ice bars are close together across the far north.
02:50So it will be perhaps windy here.
02:51We could see a brisk and chilly wind on some of these North Sea coasts,
02:54certainly early on on Sunday.
02:56It will be a cold start with that frost.
02:58But then, as I said, a beautiful winter's day if you like sunny skies.
03:02Some high cloud at times may make that sunshine fairly hazy.
03:06But you'll be able to feel the opricity.
03:08That is the warmth of the sun on a winter's day on Sunday.
03:12Temperatures will be 7, 8, 9 degrees Celsius.
03:15Pretty much bang on average for the time of year.
03:17Obviously, that is lower than it is at the moment.
03:20So temperatures will be 3, 4, even 5 degrees lower.
03:23But with light winds in the sunshine, as I said, that shouldn't feel too bad at all.
03:27Temperatures will drop on Sunday night.
03:29And we are looking at further frosts as we go through next week,
03:32where it's likely to stay mostly dry and colder than it has been.
03:36But nothing exceptional.
03:38More details on all of that if you follow us across social media.
