00:00Welcome to your national weather updates, a mixed picture with cloud and sunshine through the day today.
00:06We've still got high pressure in control giving most of us a dry day,
00:10but around this area of high pressure winds are always going clockwise and feeding in some moisture from the North Sea.
00:17So if we take a look at the satellites and radar from earlier,
00:20you can see quite a few showers over northeast England and eastern Scotland
00:23and some coming into the east of Northern Ireland.
00:26It's been easing off, but still some affecting Northern Ireland,
00:29particularly central and southern Scotland through the rest of Thursday.
00:33It's heading to ease off across northern England and eastern Scotland
00:37and generally just staying pretty drab here.
00:39But it's a much brighter day compared to yesterday for south Wales and southern counties of England.
00:43There's some decent spells of sunshine in the far northwest.
00:46And of course, the sun makes all the difference at this time of year,
00:49feeling pretty pleasant, 10, maybe 11 Celsius along the south coast,
00:53where it stays glum six or seven Celsius.
00:56And with those showers, that's not going to feel very pleasant at all.
00:59A bit of a breeze picking up again across parts of East Anglia and the Kent coastline.
01:04And that will continue through the night and start to push the cloud back into parts of Wales
01:09and southwest England through the evening time, where we keep clear skies in the west.
01:14The map turns blue, so there will be some pockets of frost.
01:17But generally, this blanket of cloud for most towns and cities
01:20will keep temperatures just a little bit above freezing at three or four Celsius.
01:24But as I say, there will be some pockets of frost where the skies stay clearest, longest.
01:28That does mean a bright start to Friday for the highlands of Scotland, the Western Isles, parts of west Wales.
01:34For many, though, it's going to be another fairly grey day, a cloudier day across southern England.
01:39Reasonably hopeful that we'll see some brighter skies across southern Scotland, eastern Scotland eventually.
01:45And some holes may develop in the cloud elsewhere.
01:48But certainly along these North Sea coasts with a reasonable breeze,
01:52it's not going to feel very pleasant again with temperatures, again, generally around or a touch below average 7, 8.
01:59With a bit of sunshine, maybe 9 or 10 Celsius.
02:02So a chilly feel, but it's certainly going to get colder as we go through Friday night and more particularly into the weekend.
02:09Again, where we've got the cloud, that will keep the temperatures up.
02:12But any clear skies will allow a frost to form pretty rapidly on Friday night.
02:16The wind's still going round like this.
02:19So you can tell the high pressure is still close by.
02:22But it's just starting this weekend to edge away to the west.
02:26And that allows more of a northerly wind to pick up through the weekend.
02:31And that will bring colder air down from the north.
02:34So it is going to turn colder through this weekend and colder still as we go into next week.
02:41And as things turn colder and colder, an increasing likelihood of frost, ice and yes, some snow as we go into next week.
02:48Too early to put too much detail on where and when.
02:51So stay tuned to the forecast.
02:53But it's definitely looking cold next week.
