00:00Hello, Alex Burkill here again with your latest Met Office weather update. The weather's going
00:05to turn quite a bit colder for many of us as we go through this week, but for the time
00:09being, much of the UK is still under the milder air. However, we have colder air waiting just
00:14to the north of us behind a front. This front has brought some significant rain across parts
00:19of Scotland so far this Monday. This front then is going to push its way southwards as
00:24we go through the next 24 hours or so. Yes, it will bring some heavy rain for some of
00:28us, but it also will allow for that colder air to plunge its way southwards, which is
00:33why we are going to see temperatures dropping as we head towards the middle of the week.
00:38Back to the here and now, and like I said, it's been a wet and windy day across many
00:42parts of Scotland. The heaviest rain's starting to ease as we go through the evening and overnight
00:46and pushes its way southwards across southern Scotland into northern England and also Northern
00:51Ireland too. Colder air following in behind and a scattering of showers across parts of
00:55Scotland. These two combined bring the risk of some sleet or snow over higher ground and
01:00also watch out for some icy patches first thing on Tuesday morning across the north
01:03of Scotland in particular. Drier further south, but quite a cloudy story and with that milder
01:08air, temperatures here aren't going to drop much. Many places waking up on Tuesday morning
01:13in double figures. As we go through the day itself on Tuesday then, that band of rain
01:18continues to push a little bit further southwards, spreading into central England, across Wales
01:23too, and some of the rain across Wales could be quite heavy, could see a little bit of
01:26disruption in association with that. Staying dry across the far south though, mostly cloudy,
01:32not a huge amount of sunshine here, greater chance of seeing sunshine further north across
01:36Northern Ireland. Once that rain clears away, it's going to turn largely sunny through the
01:41afternoon and even across much of Scotland, some decent sunny spells in between those
01:45scattered showers which could still be falling as sleet or snow. As we look at our temperatures
01:50and a real north-south split across the north, temperatures will be a little bit below average
01:54for the time of year. In fact, some places across northern Scotland will struggle into
01:58the low to mid single figures. A different story further south, highs of around 13 or
02:0314 Celsius. Later on Tuesday, as we go through the evening and overnight, that band of rain
02:08still edges further southwards and it is still going to be a bit heavy at times, so could
02:13bring a pretty wet end to the day here and it's likely to linger through much of the
02:17night across the far south of the UK. Elsewhere though, clearer skies coming in from the north
02:22on that colder air and so temperatures are going to take quite a drop. Many places seeing
02:27a touch of frost as temperatures dip to around, if not a little bit below freezing, particularly
02:32across northern parts across Scotland, temperatures could fall several degrees below freezing,
02:36so again there is the risk of some icy patches when we wake up on Wednesday morning. Through
02:41Wednesday itself then, a bit of a wet start then across some southern counties that rain
02:45may linger for a time, in fact across the south west it may linger through much of the
02:49day before some more rain starts to push its way in from the south west. Otherwise and
02:53elsewhere, a brighter picture, some decent bright or sunny spells, a scattering of showers
02:58still though across Scotland and again these could still be wintry at times. Temperatures
03:02still on the low side for many parts of the UK because of colder air across much of the
03:06country, a bit milder towards the far south, just about getting into double figures here.
03:12As we go later on in the week and like I said we have cold air across the bulk of the
03:16UK and a weather system that's going to come in from the south west is likely to then hit
03:21that colder air and then that brings the risk of some significant snow, most likely across
03:27central parts of the UK, that's where we have the greatest chance of seeing any disruption.
03:32However, there is a bit of uncertainty as to exactly where and when we are going to
03:36see the most disruptive snow. Aidan has a more in depth look at this in our week ahead
03:40forecast which is available on YouTube.
