00:00Hello there, welcome to your morning forecast from the Met Office. Be prepared for some
00:04travel disruption today in terms of rail, roads and even ferries, particularly across
00:09northern and central parts of the UK. All courtesy of an area of low pressure which
00:13is deep, bringing with it severe gales towards the north-east and some damaging gusts extending
00:18down the country towards Norfolk, North Wales and Northern Ireland, also seeing those strong
00:23winds. Strongest winds always will be towards the north-east and watch out for high waves
00:27associated with this system as well. So lots of lively weather out there this morning,
00:32the risk particularly to high-sided vehicles with the winds being so strong and with that
00:37we do have frequent heavy showers driving in on that strong wind across much of Scotland.
00:44So the wind is cold, the showers will be heavy and that wind is relentless. The showers then
00:50moving towards Northern Ireland as well as Cumbria and Northumberland through the first
00:54part of the morning. Now through the morning we'll see more clouds across Yorkshire, southwards
00:58much of Wales, southern parts of Northern Ireland. Towards the south, yes a breezy
01:02morning, a mostly dry one, relatively mild with a fair amount of clouds and spits and
01:07spots of rain in the wind. So that's the picture first thing this morning if you are stepping
01:12out and about. The winds will continue with some strength through the day and certainly
01:18those damaging gusts will be relentless into the afternoon as well, especially over the
01:24Highlands, the Pennines, the higher routes of Northern Ireland and towards the Lee of
01:29the higher ground. These showers do extend down towards central parts of England, eastern
01:33England, northern parts of Wales through the afternoon as the clouds and patty rain becomes
01:38confined to the far south-west. But towards the north, central and northern areas of Scotland
01:43you'll find an increasingly wintry mix coming through with the risk of hail and thunder
01:47as well. So, windy, incredibly windy towards the north-east, mild towards the south-west
01:54but that wind will bring with it a cold feel to things as we head through the day. This
01:59wind warning extends to 9pm this evening. At the same time, notice this cloud increases
02:06across Northern Ireland and much of Wales with the rain coming and going, whereas these
02:10wintry showers continue across northern and north-eastern areas of Scotland and showery
02:14bursts also across northern England, western parts of Scotland. Elsewhere towards the far
02:19south-east, yes, you could see again some patchy rain to end the night, whereas the
02:24winds across the far north-east will slowly ease but it will be a slow process. Temperatures
02:30then cold in the north-east, milder conditions further south as well as west with some showery
02:35bursts of rain to start the day on Friday. Now on Friday, increasingly we'll see snow
02:40showers across Shetland. Through the day we could see 5-10cm here and also over the higher
02:46grounds of Scotland. These showery bursts will continue. It's a cloudy morning with
02:51showery bursts continuing, although we will see a little clearance coming in from the
02:55south-west later and even some breaks in the clouds across western parts of Northern Ireland,
03:00south-west England as well as Wales. Temperatures then 10-11 degrees Celsius but colder across
03:05central and northern areas of Scotland. And here's your outlook through Saturday. Yet
03:10more cloud and rain, particularly across more northern areas of the country. Further south
03:15it's a rather cloudy and mild day. And for Christmas Day, the risk of some wintry showers
03:19towards the north, a windy day, drier further south and east and eventually those winds
03:24will ease. I'll see you later.
