00:00Strong, gusty winds through Thursday with severe gales towards the northeast, wind warnings
00:06are in force.
00:07All courtesy of a deep area of low pressure, which is tracking across from the north towards
00:12Scandinavia.
00:13Now, this has been named a storm pier by the Danish Meteorological Institute, but for the
00:19UK, you can see this yellow warning extending down towards northern England, clipping the
00:22far north of East Anglia.
00:24Gusts to the lee of higher ground and over higher ground could reach 70 miles an hour,
00:28even higher across the far northeast of Scotland, and generally speaking, it's a windy day,
00:32it's a gusty day, without breaks of rain, and then showers.
00:36So wherever you are, you will see some wet weather through the next 24 hours, but more
00:41persistent bursts through Wednesday evening continue across western Scotland, patchy rain
00:45from Northern Ireland, northwest England, west Wales, and then the rain really gathers
00:49across the far north of Scotland as the winds pick up some strength, and it's this weather
00:54front which will sink southwards through Thursday.
00:56So it's through the early hours of the morning, you'll notice a difference in the air because
01:00the winds are going to really strengthen, and we could see severe gales across Shetland.
01:06Gustiness as well will be a key feature, causing problems on the roads through the morning
01:10as showers follow the rain, all sinking down towards more southern areas.
01:15So first thing then, across Scotland on Thursday morning, it's a strong driving wind, high
01:21waves, and also frequent and heavy showers.
01:25We hang on to more clouds and rain across southern parts of Northern Ireland, Yorkshire
01:29southwards, across Wales as well, more cloud, patchy rain, drier and breezy across central
01:34southern England down towards the west country.
01:37So through the morning, this area of cloud and rain continues its passage southwards,
01:42and then most of the country will see these blustery showers.
01:47But the winds will be damaging, so causing problems on the roads throughout the day,
01:51especially across more northern and central areas.
01:54As the winds come in from the north, it's going to feel colder as well.
01:58And look at the wind strength towards the northeast, that's where we'll see severe gales
02:03and again, gusts could reach 80 miles an hour.
02:05By the afternoon, it's only the far south where we'll see the clouds and some patchy
02:09rain.
02:10Elsewhere, some dry skies coming through, even broken cloud, but frequent showers in
02:14the north as well as the northwest, pushing down the north channel towards the northwest
02:18of England.
02:19Temperatures typically around 10, 11 degrees Celsius colder across the far north of Scotland.
02:25So that's Thursday afternoon through Thursday evening.
02:28That wind warning is in force until 9pm.
02:31And again, a mix of showers, some clearer skies, more cloud towards more southwestern
02:37areas and patchy rain returns to Northern Ireland through the evening and overnight.
02:42Now these showers across the far north are likely to turn wintry, particularly over the
02:46higher ground as we head into Friday morning.
02:49And the risk of snow showers for Shetland as well, where the temperatures are really
02:52going to struggle through the next 48 hours, the risk of some ice here.
02:56But elsewhere through Friday morning, it's relatively mild to start the day, but still
03:01wet in places, still a lot of clouds, still windy with outbreaks of rain.
03:06So through Friday, we watch as those snow showers continue across Shetland, some wintry
03:11nests in those showers across the far north of Scotland and also the risk of thunder.
03:17Elsewhere, cloud comes and goes with outbreaks of rain.
03:19We could see a clearance coming in across the southwest later, some broken clouds, even
03:24Northern Ireland as this weather front shifts towards more eastern areas.
03:28So again, most places seeing some wet weather through the day as temperatures hold around
03:3210 to 12 degrees Celsius.
03:34It's really the battle between the cold air towards the north and milder conditions really
03:38dominating through the next few days.
03:40But across the northeast, that's where you'll feel the difference in temperature.
03:44It's going to really vary.
03:46But as we head through Saturday, another weather system comes in.
03:48So yet again, unsettled conditions with rain or showers and then slowly this colder air
03:54sort of tries to tuck in across the far north and northwest as we head through Christmas
03:59Eve.
04:00Elsewhere, it does turn drier into Christmas Day, a windy day, though, with wintry showers
04:04in the north, particularly over the higher ground, you'll see some snow and only later
04:08we'll see those winds ease a little bit.
