14 March - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00Hello. All sorts happening with our weather during the next few days. We've got a spell
00:05of rain, sleet and hill snow crossing central parts during the rest of the day. Northern
00:10England, interparts of Wales, the Midlands, showers further south. Once that clears through
00:15we continue to see some wintry showers affecting the north and north-west of Scotland. So rain,
00:21sleet, hill snow, hail, further spells of significant snow for Shetland in particular
00:27and a risk of icy patches in the far north and north-west. Otherwise clearing skies and
00:31temperatures falling, a widespread frost and perhaps as low as minus 10 Celsius for sheltered
00:37parts of northern Scotland, especially where we've got a bit of snow cover, so for example
00:41somewhere like Altnahara in Sutherland. So a cold start to Wednesday but actually a bright
00:46start with a ridge of high pressure in charge first thing. Many places will be dry with
00:51sunny spells. It doesn't last long, another weather front moves in, this time from the
00:55south-west. This is bringing milder air but initially it's going to be bringing some rain
01:01falling into the cold air and as a result by mid-morning the rain setting in across
01:06Northern Ireland and falling as snow over the hills. Likewise, mid to north Wales, hill
01:11snow but rain at lower levels. Quite quickly it turns back to rain at all levels, however
01:15the cold air remains there across Northern England and Scotland so more significant snow
01:19expected later here. But for the north and north-east of Scotland, initially some snow
01:23showers drying out by the end of the afternoon and then clouding over in the east of England
01:28but staying largely dry until the end of the afternoon and feeling cold I think across
01:32the UK even if it is turning milder from the south-west because of that cloud, rain and
01:38wind setting in. Brighter skies likely towards the north-east of Scotland, sunny spells here
01:45but also across the UK we've got spells of rain and some significant snow for Northern
01:51England into Scotland. Now think the falling snow likely initially above about 100m but
01:57any significant accumulating snow around 200-300m upwards and 10 or more centimetres of snow
02:05building up above 400m for central and southern Scotland. At lower levels I think by the end
02:12of Wednesday and into the start of Thursday turning back to rain, the milder air starting
02:17to arrive on this strong south-westerly air flow but we keep the colder conditions across
02:21central and northern Scotland so perhaps some hill snow remaining here and even to some
02:26lower levels for the likes of Shetland. Elsewhere across the UK it's a milder night with temperatures
02:32as we begin Thursday up in the mid to high single figures in the south. And rain the
02:38key concern actually by this stage for Northern Ireland into south-west Scotland, north-west
02:43England and Wales. The rain leading to some tricky travelling conditions late Wednesday
02:49and into the start of Thursday, some heavy spells of wet weather particularly over western
02:53hills of England, south-west Scotland and Wales. That rain continues for a time during
02:58Thursday, the worst conditions I suspect early on. Stays cold across the far north of Scotland
03:03but any early snow tending to turn back to rain here, the milder air across the UK by
03:09Thursday afternoon. Brighter skies into Northern Ireland, northern England, parts of west Wales
03:14and the far south-west and some brightness remaining in the south-east but there will
03:18be showers or longer spells of rain quite widely across the UK. A gusty wind as well,
03:24that wind bouncing around the coasts and the hills but it's coming from the south-west
03:28and so quite widely. Double figures, perhaps up to 14 or even 15 Celsius in some spots
03:33up the north of Scotland, staying a bit colder, albeit less cold than it has been recently.
03:40Those spells of rain and showers continue into Friday and the start of the weekend so
03:45the weather very changeable at the moment from day to day and from place to place, staying
03:49unsettled but increasingly mild later this week.
