00:00Hello, and welcome to the latest from the Met Office. A sunny Saturday is expected countrywide
00:07and it will feel warm in that sunshine with lighter winds compared to Friday for northern
00:12parts of the UK, that wind easing through the rest of the evening into the early hours
00:17of Saturday. Skies increasingly clear across southern and eastern Scotland and Northern
00:22Ireland, but we keep the thicker cloud for the north-west of Scotland and some light
00:26outbreaks of rain mainly over coast and higher ground here. Now, away from there under the
00:31clear skies with the lighter winds, temperatures falling away and a few fog patches may develop
00:37in one or two spots. And overnight lows are expected to be around 7 to 10 Celsius generally,
00:43but perhaps down to 4 degrees or so in some sheltered spots. Nevertheless, a bright start
00:49to the weekend. Plenty of sunshine for England, Wales, southern and eastern Scotland, Northern
00:53Ireland, even in the north-west of Scotland where we start with some patchy rain and drizzle
00:58that disappears, the cloud lifts and breaks. By the afternoon, widespread warm sunshine
01:03for the vast majority. Temperatures responding well, widely above average and something like
01:09the mid to high teens for the most part. But eastern Scotland could see 20 degrees, could
01:15be the warmest day of the year so far for Scotland and could be the warmest day of the
01:18year so far across the UK with temperatures reaching 24 Celsius in London. But as those
01:25temperatures rise, the first signs of trouble down towards the far south-west. Showers starting
01:31to develop and then late afternoon into early evening, those showers begin to spread in
01:36from the south-west. High pressure to the east and this general warm southerly airflow
01:43for Sunday but the influence of low pressure towards the west sending some instability
01:50our way and that engaging with the warm plume could lead to some dramatic weather in one
01:55or two spots. But initially on Saturday evening, it's showers or longer spells of rain pushing
02:00into the south-west, south Wales and then you can see the brighter colours there around
02:04central southern England, the English Channel coast. Potential for some very heavy rain,
02:10thunderstorms. Much of the thundery activity may well remain offshore but there is that
02:15threat particularly around Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight especially. Showers are sent
02:23northwards through the night on Saturday night, avoiding Scotland and Northern Ireland with
02:27clear skies here and light winds. Temperatures again dipping down to perhaps 4 Celsius in
02:33some sheltered spots but a milder night to come further south with the cloud and those
02:39outbreaks of rain or showers. Showers then moving north into Northern England, parts
02:43of Northern Ireland, perhaps southern Scotland seeing a few of those showers later in the
02:48morning and early afternoon. But it tends to dry up a little by the afternoon across
02:53a large part of England and Wales. Sunshine returning and as that sunshine returns, although
03:00always a threat of some showers towards the south-east, there is the potential again for
03:04some warmth. We're looking at high teens, low twenties. Given enough sunshine, 24 Celsius
03:09possible in the south-east. With a cloudier zone in the middle though and with those outbreaks
03:15of rain or showers, perhaps some thunderstorms as well, Northern England, southern Scotland,
03:20north Wales is going to be feeling cooler and a bit of an easterly there for the North
03:24Sea coast, so cooler here. But 20 Celsius possible for parts of west and north-west
03:30Scotland with that wind direction and staying largely sunny in the north of Scotland. So
03:35sunshine in the far north and far south, but a general trend for more showery weather Monday,
03:43Tuesday, but also it will continue to be warm in places.
