00:00Welcome to your national weather update.
00:02We have a number of Met Office yellow warnings in place
00:05for the next several days for snow and ice.
00:07Please check our app and our website for more details.
00:10They're constantly being updated.
00:12Here's the bigger picture, the view from space.
00:14The little hook there in the satellite image,
00:16that's the low pressure system.
00:17And this line of cloud is a cold front.
00:20Behind that, we have the cold air
00:21that's been pushing southwards and these spotty clouds
00:24across northern parts there, the snow showers that
00:26have been peppering northern Scotland for a couple of days.
00:29That weather front in the south did produce a light covering
00:31of snow in places, some damp conditions persisting,
00:34but mostly light rain or sleet in southern counties
00:37this evening, this afternoon.
00:39And it is kind of mostly fizzling out.
00:41For many, it's a bright, fine, sunny day
00:42over northern England, north Wales, northern Ireland,
00:44southern Scotland.
00:46More snow showers coming in across northern Scotland,
00:48so snow building up here a little more
00:51and potentially causing some further disruption
00:53with icy conditions on the roads.
00:55It is a cold day, as you can imagine.
00:58We've got the cold air in place, but still, we
00:59could get up to 6, maybe 7 or 8 in the far southwest,
01:02but generally 5 or 6 degrees.
01:04The winds, though, are not too strong,
01:06gusts making it feel a little colder across northern Scotland.
01:09Certainly going to be cold tonight very quickly
01:11under the clear skies.
01:12The blue takes hold of the chart.
01:14Further south, we need to keep our eyes
01:16on these areas of sleet and snow coming in across the south.
01:19That could easily provide a covering
01:21across southern counties of England,
01:22perhaps even into parts of south Wales.
01:24On the coast, likely to be rain, but inland sleet
01:27and some snow, certainly over any hills,
01:30could easily see a covering, if not a little bit more.
01:32So we do have, as I say, a warning in place for that.
01:35For much of the UK, including northern Scotland,
01:37where the snow showers will be easing,
01:39it's just a clear, very cold night,
01:41with temperatures easily getting down to minus 4, minus 5,
01:44even in urban areas.
01:46We could be as low as minus 15 through some sheltered Scottish
01:49glens.
01:50Closer to freezing in the south, where
01:51we have the clouds and the sleet and snow mixture, which
01:54will continue into tomorrow morning across parts
01:56of the south, some uncertainty about how far north it gets
01:59and how intense the sleet and snow is.
02:02But we could easily see a covering
02:03across southern counties of England,
02:05tending to ease off a little as we go through the day
02:07from the southeast.
02:09But in the southwest, we could well
02:10see the wet weather pepping up again.
02:12And that means further snow through the late afternoon
02:15into the evening, perhaps into parts of south Wales,
02:18maybe even into the south Midlands,
02:20spreading its way back towards the southeast.
02:22So again, a few centimetres of snow
02:24possible across these southern counties.
02:26But it's really on the cusp.
02:28We'll also see the winds picking up,
02:29which may well introduce milder air
02:31and turn it back to rain in the far southwest.
02:34Again, for much of the UK, it's a fine sunny day tomorrow.
02:37Plenty of sunshine and temperatures stumbling up
02:39to 3 or 4 degrees Celsius.
02:41But the winds will be lighter in northern Scotland,
02:44feeling colder with the wet weather in the south.
02:46And as I said, that sleet and snow likely to pep up
02:48through the afternoon into the evening
02:50over parts of south Wales, the south Midlands,
02:52and again into the southeast.
02:54So again, the potential for further snow
02:57across the southern counties
02:58during the course of Wednesday evening.
03:00So we kind of have two pulses across the south,
03:03potentially causing disruption.
03:05Certainly some tricky travelling conditions
03:07across the south during Wednesday evening.
03:09The winds also likely to pick up,
03:11especially along the south coast elsewhere.
03:13The winds remain light and another frosty night
03:15as we head into Thursday.
03:17So the potential for disruption across these southern areas
03:20as this low moves through the channel during Wednesday.
03:24That scurries out of the way on Wednesday night
03:26and then eyes out west as another low comes in,
03:29bringing moisture, hitting the cold air,
03:31and potentially bringing another area of heavy snow
03:34over parts of northern England, north Wales,
03:37northern Ireland and Scotland.
03:39This could produce more snow
03:41compared to what we'll see in the south.
03:43There'll be strong winds as well.
03:45So that means blizzards are possible,
03:46particularly on some of the higher routes.
03:48This is Thursday into Friday.
03:50So we have that double whammy really in the south
03:52during Wednesday and then further north Thursday
03:54and into Friday.
03:55And there could be further bout of snow
03:57as we head into the weekend as well.
03:59As I said at the start,
04:00please do keep up to date with the latest weather warnings.
04:03See if your area could be affected.
04:05They're constantly being monitored.
