00:00Hello, welcome to your latest weather update from the Met Office.
00:04Wet and windy weather is still on the cards as we head towards Christmas with low pressure
00:08very much in charge up to the northwest of the UK.
00:12High pressure down to the south though does bring us some milder than average air with
00:15some warmer temperatures over the next few days.
00:18Through Christmas Day itself, this frontal system sweeps its way eastwards across the
00:21UK before we see a very brief ridge of high pressure developing into Boxing Day and those
00:26temperatures generally returning closer to average for the time of year.
00:31Back to Saturday evening though and heavy rain continues across parts of Scotland and
00:35sinks its way southwards across parts of Wales and into parts of England as well, turning
00:39particularly heavy over western parts of Wales where we could see up to 80mm of rain.
00:44Generally remaining cloudy though for much of England and Wales, although there will
00:47be some clearer spells across the far north of Northern Ireland and maybe into parts of
00:50Scotland too, although blustery showers pushing in from the west.
00:55It'll be a widely mild night across the UK, temperatures in the south around 11 or 12
01:00degrees and for much of Scotland as well staying in the high single figures.
01:04The very very far north east of Scotland though perhaps staying close to freezing and we could
01:08even see the odd touch of frost possible.
01:11So a bit of a chilly start across the very far north with those showers continuing to
01:15push in from the west as we go through Christmas Eve morning.
01:18Further south though, still a very damp and cloudy picture.
01:21Rain continues to push its way eastwards as we head through the afternoon, turning
01:26particularly windy across northern parts of England and Scotland too where we could see
01:30gusts up to 70mph.
01:32This could lead to some tricky driving conditions and some travel disruption for anybody travelling
01:36before Christmas.
01:37Another mild day particularly under all that cloud and rain in the south around 13 or 14
01:42degrees and still above average across Northern Ireland and Scotland too.
01:47Through the rest of Christmas Eve into the evening, that rain across the south slowly
01:51pushes its way south and eastwards so perhaps turning drier for a time across parts of Wales
01:56and England.
01:57Those showers across Scotland too will gradually start to ease with some clear skies here so
02:00perhaps a bit of a frosty start in places, temperatures as low as minus 2 or minus 3
02:06in some rural spots.
02:08Down in the south though, around 11 or 12 degrees so still a very mild start to Christmas
02:13day and a very cloudy and damp start too for much of England and Wales.
02:18That rain continues to push in from the west turning heavier across parts of Wales and
02:21south-west England so a very cloudy and damp day for much of England and Wales on Christmas
02:26day and a mild day too, temperatures around 13 or 14 degrees.
02:31Further north though, across Scotland a band of rain pushes its way northwards turning
02:34wintry over the hills.
02:35We could even see up to 10cm of snow so definitely a white Christmas for Scotland.
02:41Temperatures here are closer to average though and turning a little bit chillier as we head
02:45through Christmas day night.
02:47That rain across the south though gradually clears its way south and eastwards so turning
02:50much drier across parts of Wales and south-west England through Christmas day night leading
02:55to a bit of a frosty start for Boxing Day.
02:58Boxing Day, definitely the best day of the next couple of days if you're looking for
03:01some dry weather.
03:02Plenty of dry conditions around, even some sunshine across Northern Ireland, Northern
03:06England and into parts of Scotland too.
03:08A little cloudier across parts of Wales and south-west England as this next system waits
03:12in the wings but temperatures are generally closer to average across much of the UK, around
03:169 or 10 degrees in the south and maybe 5 or 6 in the north but with some lighter winds
03:20probably feeling a little more pleasant than recent days.
03:23That wet weather waiting in the wings arrives as we go through the rest of the week so you
03:27can keep up to date with that by following us on social media and don't forget to subscribe
