00:00Hello, and welcome to your latest update from the Met Office.
00:04We'll continue to see big contrasts across the UK through the rest of Christmas Day.
00:08It's cold with some bright skies in the north. Elsewhere, cloudy with outbreaks of rain,
00:13which will be heavy in places. This afternoon, any brighter skies will be confined to the
00:17far north and northeast where there'll be some sunny spells. Elsewhere, cloudy for most
00:21with outbreaks of rain, with some heavy bursts of rain over parts of the south-west and moving
00:26into Northern Ireland, and there could even be some sleet and hill snow over parts of
00:30the Pennines. A cold day in the north, with the brisk wind making it feel even colder,
00:36contrasting with much milder conditions in the south-west.
00:39Into this evening, the rain will continue slowly north-eastwards, bringing some heavy
00:42rain to Northern Ireland where a weather warning is in force, and where the rain encounters
00:47colder air, it will turn to sleet and snow across parts of Northern England and Scotland.
00:52The snow is most likely to settle on ground above about 300 metres, and a Met Office
00:56yellow warning for snow has been issued. The snow combined with strong winds will lead
01:00to some difficult travelling conditions if you're out early on Boxing Day morning.
01:05It'll be coldest in the far north, with temperatures falling as low as minus 5 in some rural spots,
01:11but temperatures in most towns and cities elsewhere will remain above freezing.
01:17So Boxing Day morning starts cloudy with rain continuing to move north-east, and with some
01:22outbreaks of snow continuing over some of the higher ground in the north. Brighter
01:26weather follows from the south-west, but also some heavy showers, which could bring some
01:30hail and the odd rumble of thunder across Wales and southern England.
01:34It's a milder day compared with Christmas Day for most of us, with temperatures in double
01:38figures in the south, but only single figures in the north.
01:43Looking further ahead into next week, it'll often be cloudy with some spells of rain,
01:47although there will be some drier and brighter periods too, and it will become very mild
01:52from midweek onwards, as Atlantic weather systems move across the UK.
01:57That's all from me for now. Merry Christmas!
