00:00Hello there, welcome to your weather update. More rain on Thursday night and into Friday.
00:05Warnings have been issued for the north. But first of all, let's take a look at the jet
00:08stream. Across the mid-Atlantic, it's powerful at the moment. We've got a dig of cold air
00:12sinking south, clashing with milder conditions across more southern areas. And this is where
00:17weather fronts are developing in situ, tracking ever eastwards. And it's the position of this
00:22jet stream which is allowing for this wet weather to be driven in across the UK. Associated
00:28with that, strong winds. In fact, as we head through the next 12 hours, we'll see gales
00:33develop again, particularly across Irish seacoast, even severe gales. You can see these shaded
00:38pink areas showing where the strongest winds will be as we head into Friday and outbreaks
00:42of rain. And as the rain hits the colder air across central and northern areas of Scotland,
00:46expect some snow and ice. So a multitude of hazards out there. However, through Thursday
00:53afternoon, it's pretty much sunshine and showers across England and Wales. Now across Scotland
00:58and Northern Ireland, we'll see more in the way of clouds and some showery bursts of rain
01:02again pushing ever eastwards. Winds will be strong from time to time. Some strong gusts
01:07as well as we head through the afternoon. As temperatures rise to around 6 in the north,
01:138 to 10 further south, add on the strength of the wind, it's going to feel cold. And
01:17along the coast, we could see gusts up to around 45, perhaps even touching 50 miles
01:20an hour from time to time. Now, as we head through to Thursday evening, warnings have
01:25been issued. And the reason why this rain is extensive and it will be heavy at times.
01:31You can see it just pushing in from the west as we head through Thursday evening. Before
01:36that, though, temperatures really taken a tumble across the northern part of the country. So
01:40expect some ice, transient ice. And also as the rain pushes ever northwards, hits the colder,
01:46it will turn to snow, particularly over the higher ground. And we'll see some high rainfall
01:49totals across Northern Ireland and much of Scotland. And that's why there has been a
01:53rain warning issued for these parts overnight and into tomorrow. The winds also will pick up
01:58some strength and it's going to be a cold start to the day wherever you are across most parts
02:03of the country. So yes, we have yellow rain warnings for Northern Ireland as well as Scotland
02:08and an ice and snow warning for central and northern areas of Scotland. Severe gales will
02:12develop through into the early hours of Friday morning across the North Channel and Irish Sea
02:18coast as well as Channel Coast. We'll see gales through Friday morning as well. So it will be a
02:23wet start to the day. Not only are we seeing rain across the northern half of the UK, more rain
02:28sweeps in across more southern areas. So a wet and windy spell through Friday morning, causing
02:33problems on the roads, some high rainfall totals, surface water issues and also those strong winds.
02:39But it will clear towards the east around lunchtime. In its wake, we'll see perhaps some
02:44drier skies, but always the risk of showers across Northern Ireland and western Scotland
02:49associated with some strong gusts. Again, we could see gales across this part of the world.
02:55Generally speaking, temperatures will rise to around 9 to 11 degrees Celsius, so perhaps
03:00slightly higher than today. Even so, it's going to feel chilly with that wind. So that's Friday
03:06afternoon through Friday evening. Further showery bursts of rain come in from the west. The winds
03:12remain strong and northerly across Shetland as well as Orkney, delivering one or two showers here
03:17and then more rain through New Year's Eve. The extent of the rain is slightly uncertain at the
03:21moment, but certainly much of England and Wales will see some wet weather. It could push ever
03:26northwards and we'll see showery bursts of rain come in from the west as we head through the day.
03:30Temperatures will struggle in the north and in fact it will turn colder in the south as well.
03:35That does mean though, as we head through to New Year's Day, once that rain clears, we'll see some
03:41drier skies come in, particularly across Northern Ireland and Scotland. That rain clears towards
03:46the east through the afternoon, so for the southeast you could be under clouds and rain
03:50and also some stronger winds for a time before we see some drier skies as we head through to the
03:55beginning of 2023. Certainly Monday's looking drier, a bit chilly. We will see some sunshine
04:01around and then all change yet again through the middle part of next week. More rain on its way.
04:07I'll see you later. Bye-bye.
