00:00Hello there, welcome to Wednesday evening forecast from the Met Office.
00:04Storm Gerrit is the seventh named storm of the season and continues to bring impacts
00:08across the UK through Wednesday evening.
00:11There are numerous weather warnings in force, notably wind warnings across the south coast,
00:16west coast of England and Wales and a rain warning.
00:19We've seen a lot of rain through the last 12 hours extending towards Scotland as well
00:23with snow over the higher ground, blizzard conditions here.
00:26Some force winds develop across the far north of Scotland and winds generally under this
00:30yellow warning could reach locally 70mph again across exposure.
00:36Now through Wednesday evening we watch as the rain turns to snow across Shetland causing
00:41blizzards, drifting snow and gusts here overnight could reach 80mph.
00:48So wherever you are, it's a windy night.
00:51Storm Gerrit, the centre, remains to the north west of the country.
00:55It's fairly slow moving, hence the reason why Thursday will again be a windy day.
01:01So through Wednesday evening and overnight you can see where the heaviest, most persistent
01:05rain is and again turning to snow across Shetland.
01:09Bands of showers will move in from the west.
01:11The winds then pick up further strength, particularly across the Irish sea coast, over the Welsh
01:15mountains towards the north west of England and further spells of showery rain continue
01:20to swirl around this complex low pressure system towards the north west.
01:25Some clearer skies possibly across eastern counties into the early hours of the morning
01:29but showers never too far away and a cold start to the day across the northern half
01:33of the UK, mild towards the far south.
01:37So first thing on Thursday morning then, you can see more persistent rain across Orkney
01:41clipping the far south of Shetland, western isles as well.
01:45Showers moving in on this strong wind, particularly across more western areas, snow over the higher
01:49ground, perhaps some dry slots from time to time across eastern areas of Scotland,
01:53north east England, showers never too far away and showers will continue to move in
01:57across the Isle of Man, Northern Ireland, much of England and Wales and they will band
02:02together through the day on Thursday causing some problems on the roads as we see some
02:07heavy intense bursts extending.
02:10So through Thursday morning, as I said, showers will come and go, they'll be frequent and
02:14heavy, snow over the higher ground and a driving wind, this strong wind delivering
02:20further showers and notice across Wales towards the midlands, northern and eastern England,
02:25this band of rain here will again eventually sink its way southwards but some intense downpours
02:30on it.
02:31Elsewhere, showery bursts will just continue, it's pretty much a day of heavy showers and
02:36strong winds.
02:37Cold across the far north, mild towards the south, 12 degrees here and in between we'll
02:42see temperatures around 8 or 9 degrees celsius but that wind will continue into Thursday
02:48evening.
02:49Through Thursday evening, watch out for some heavy rain, intense downpours as it clears
02:53London, Kent down towards the low countries and then it really is a showery night yet
02:58again.
02:59But these showers will again fall as snow over the higher ground as a cold wind kicks
03:04in from the north across Caithness as well as the Western Isles.
03:08In between, perhaps some clearer skies through the early hours of Friday morning and temperatures
03:14will fall slightly lower than what they have done, so 6, 7, 8 degrees celsius here.
03:19We could see some sub-zeros over the highlands of Scotland, very cold towards the north as
03:24well with a very strong wind delivering further showers, wintry over the higher ground.
03:30This band of rain on Friday morning will bring some wet weather to Northern Ireland, just
03:35south of the central belt but certainly Cumbria as well as southern parts of Scotland seeing
03:39some showery bursts.
03:41At the same time, further showers move in across central and southern parts of England
03:45and Wales.
03:46Perhaps some sunshine either side of it but this wind across the far north east will really
03:51pack a punch.
03:52It's going to be strong, touching Gelfors with some showery bursts.
03:56So let's just look at the bigger picture through the next few days.
04:00Gerwick eventually drifts off the scene but then more wet and windy weather moves in Saturday
04:05and into Sunday.
04:06On its leading edge, we could again see some snow.
04:08The air towards the north is cold and then come New Year's Eve, we're seeing showers
04:14yet again.
04:15Low pressure firmly in charge as we leave 2023.
04:18The air remains relatively cool through New Year's Eve into New Year's Day then.
04:23Yes it's a similar situation, perhaps winds easing a little bit towards the south before
04:27yet again we see more cloud and rain arrive from the southwest.
04:32Take care and I'll see you soon.
