00:00Hello and welcome to the latest update from the Met Office for Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
00:06And it's all about the contrast this weekend, cold and bright in the North and East on Christmas Day,
00:10rain elsewhere and very mild in the South West.
00:13Similar to how we've seen on Christmas Eve, areas of rain moving through,
00:17pushing into central areas for Christmas Eve night, Northern Ireland into Northern England,
00:23North Wales, the Midlands and East Anglia, cloudy skies and outbreaks of mostly light rain.
00:28Heavier rain moving back into South Wales and the far South West, a brisk wind here and mild.
00:34But for Scotland, clear spells and a fairly widespread ground frost
00:39and temperatures and sheltered spots dipping below freezing as well.
00:42So a chilly start here on Christmas Day and you can see that temperature contrast here.
00:47Blues in the North, milder colours further South.
00:51South West it is pushing these weather fronts in and in between they stall
00:55to bring increasingly later Christmas Day and into Boxing Day the threat of some hill snow for Northern areas.
01:02But these weather fronts will be quite active as they push into South Western parts,
01:06bringing some heavy rain at times through Christmas Day, an unpleasant day here.
01:10Whilst to the North of this weather front, well it's largely dry and bright
01:14and festive frost for Scotland as we begin Christmas Day.
01:18Plenty of dry and bright weather though remaining through the day here.
01:21Patchy cloud in the East and South of Scotland at times.
01:24Thicker cloud for Northern Ireland, Northern England and the Midlands into East Anglia.
01:27Staying dry here until later in the afternoon but windy in the North.
01:31So it will feel cold through the day, four or five on the thermometer a marked wind chill
01:36and that wind particularly brisk over the mountains in the North.
01:40Meanwhile further South, Wales, parts of Southern and South West England
01:44seeing outbreaks of rain, some heavy showers throughout Christmas Day.
01:48The rain persistent in many places so an unpleasant day to come here.
01:52Twelve Celsius but not feeling very great at all.
01:55And that rain marches northwards on Christmas Day night,
01:59bumps into the colder air, mixes and as a result we're likely to see some snow.
02:02We could see some disruptive snow over the Pennines into the Southern Uplands,
02:06higher parts of Central Scotland as well.
02:08Mainly above three or four hundred metres but because the snow is accompanied by strong winds
02:13there's the risk of some ice accumulating on power lines.
02:17There's the risk of drifting of that snow so tricky driving conditions.
02:20Watch out for that if you're travelling, first thing Boxing Day.
02:24Staying clear in the far north of Scotland, a frost here, much milder elsewhere
02:29and showers are expected for Northern Ireland, Wales,
02:32western parts of England from the word go on Boxing Day.
02:35The showers on and off perhaps not as persistent as Christmas Day
02:38and there will be some sunny spells in between.
02:41Mild here, staying cold in the north but any rain and hill snow tends to fizzle out during the day.
02:47However it will remain generally cloudy across much of the country,
02:51just the far north of Scotland staying clear.
02:54Big changes later next week as the weather turns much milder countrywide
02:59but for this festive weekend it looks like there'll be big big contrasts across the country.
03:04For now that's all from me, so Merry Christmas.
