30 December - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:00Hello again. Mild for much of the country on Thursday,
00:03exceptionally mild for parts of England and Wales for late December,
00:07and it'll be rather cloudy in many places with some outbreaks of rain.
00:11All of our weather at the moment is coming from the subtropics.
00:15Long fetch of southwesterly winds bring very mild but also
00:19moisture-laden air from the subtropics, and that's why we've got a lot of cloud.
00:24These weather fronts providing a focus for some outbreaks of rain as well.
00:28So for much of England and Wales during the rest of Thursday,
00:30it's a cloudy picture, a lot of low cloud covering western hills,
00:33and the rain focused over western hills,
00:37particularly the higher parts of mid and north Wales and some parts of northwest England.
00:43Elsewhere, a drier outlook for Scotland and Northern Ireland,
00:46the far north of England following earlier rainfall,
00:49and it will even brighten up for eastern Scotland and the far northeast of England.
00:53But wherever you are, it is going to be very mild,
00:56exceptionally so for the time of year in the south,
00:58where temperatures could reach 15 or even 16 Celsius,
01:02somewhere like northeast Wales if we get a few cloud breaks.
01:06It's also fairly breezy, and that breeze picks up through the evening,
01:09especially around Irish sea coast with coastal gales developing,
01:12the wind pushing the rain north into northern England,
01:15central and southern Scotland, as well as Northern Ireland,
01:17where it'll be heavy and persistent at times.
01:19Another brief spell of rain pushing into parts of western England
01:23and Wales after midnight as well.
01:26So for many, it's a cloudy night,
01:27and it's another very mild night in some places,
01:30temperatures holding up in the teens.
01:32The far north of Scotland, though, sees some clear spells,
01:35and it's a bit colder here.
01:37But for everyone, it's a frost-free start to New Year's Eve,
01:41a very mild but grey start for many, a lot of cloud,
01:44and a brief spell of heavier rain for central and eastern England during the morning,
01:48that clears through,
01:50and then skies brighten up for much of England and Wales,
01:52even some sunshine for a time.
01:54But the far south coast, I think, stays grey and misty through much of the day,
01:58and for the north of Scotland, also some brighter skies here.
02:00But for central and southern Scotland,
02:02Northern Ireland, as well as parts of northern England,
02:05a lot of cloud, and it stays damp here.
02:08The heavier rain earlier in the day does ease into the afternoon, however.
02:12It's also a windy day,
02:13particularly for the higher ground of north Wales and northern England,
02:16where the wind will be bouncing up the hills,
02:18providing some very blustery conditions.
02:20But once again, it's exceptionally mild in places,
02:24temperatures reaching 14 or 15 Celsius in the south,
02:27and it looks like we'll see the New Year's Eve temperature record broken.
02:32That currently stands at 14.8 Celsius.
02:35In the far north, a bit colder compared to Thursday,
02:388 or 9 degrees here,
02:40but some sunny spells to be had for northern Scotland.
02:44Into New Year's Eve evening itself,
02:46I think turning cloudy for many,
02:48drier for a time,
02:49but by the time we get to midnight,
02:51there will be some outbreaks of rain,
02:53mainly in the north and the west,
02:55northern Ireland, western Scotland in particular,
02:57and the wind will be picking up in the far west as well.
03:01But it's really quite mild as we end 2021 and go into 2022.
03:06These are the temperatures expected as the clock strikes midnight,
03:1012 or 13 Celsius on a late December night.
03:14So a mild start to 2022,
03:17but a very cloudy start,
03:19and a brief spell of heavier rain crosses the country from the west,
03:22mainly during the morning,
03:23but it slows down as it reaches the southeast quarter by the afternoon.
03:27Behind this rain,
03:29some sunny spells develop into northern and western parts of the country,
03:32but also well-scattered showers arriving from the west,
03:36and it's windy.
03:37Coastal gales in the north and the west,
03:39with the strongest winds peaking in the mid-afternoon period
03:43around the northwest of Scotland.
03:45Risk of 7.60,
03:46and perhaps even higher,
03:48mild per hour wind gusts in exposed coasts of northwest Scotland.
03:52Again, very mild on New Year's Day,
03:55temperatures once more widely in the teens,
03:5715 Celsius possible in some spots.
04:01And we'll keep you updated on the weather of the next few days,
04:03of course, and you can follow those updates on social media.
04:06But that's all from me for now.
04:07Bye-bye.
