00:00Hello there, and a very merry Christmas from all of us here at the Met Office. For most
00:05of us it is going to be a relatively mild Christmas day, but a few wintry flakes are
00:09possible as this colder air sinks south across north-west Scotland. It's more into Boxing
00:14Day though, where that cold air will really push its way across all areas of the UK.
00:19If we rewind back to Christmas Eve, though, the mild air is still very much in place,
00:24and it's actually this occluded front that might cause Santa a few issues as he delivers
00:28our presents. A band of heavy showers pushing across England and Wales, with the risk of
00:33some thunderstorms and hail in there as well. Generally across western areas, it will tend
00:38to fizzle out as it moves further east, but a few spells of rain are certainly possible.
00:42Further showers still progressing across Northern Ireland and Scotland as well, so for all areas,
00:47if you are heading out, an umbrella may prove useful for any events.
00:52Generally though, it will be a breezy day. The wind's coming up from the south, which
00:55means it will stay relatively mild, perhaps only dropping down to 9 degrees across some
00:59southern coastal areas of England. For 3 degrees, Northern Ireland areas of Scotland may be
01:04an isolated frost across the most sheltered glens of Scotland.
01:08So a relatively mild start to Christmas Day, but it will also be a cloudy and unsettled
01:13one with further outbreaks of rain and showers. Perhaps some longer spells just pushing their
01:17way into Kent and Sussex for a time, but generally across central areas of England, some sunnier
01:22spells to enjoy. It will be this then occluded front that's pushing its way across Scotland
01:27then into Northern Ireland that will bring further outbreaks of rain.
01:31Temperatures in the south then, still relatively mild with those blustery winds coming up from
01:35the south, 10, 11, 12 degrees. It's behind that occluded front then where we'll see that
01:40cold air digging in. Temperatures dropping down perhaps into the middle of the afternoon,
01:45likes of 5 degrees across northwest Scotland. Into Christmas Day evening, this occluded
01:51front is going to continue to sink its way southwards. So further outbreaks of rain are
01:55possible across then England and Wales. The showers pushing their way into the northwest
01:59could then turn wintry. And so there is a snow and ice warning across the upland areas
02:03of Scotland as we head into Boxing Day. And generally it will be a much colder night under
02:10those clearer skies, certainly across Aberdeenshire, even into Northern England and down into Wales
02:14as well. Temperatures will be dropping off a lot more compared to the start of Christmas
02:19day and certainly a frost is possible. Across the far southeast we'll just hold on to that
02:23cloud a bit more and so temperatures will be holding up a bit here, only really getting
02:27down to 6 or 5 degrees. Whilst it will be a cloudy morning for the southeast on Boxing
02:32Day, that will steady clear its way off. And so once those sunny spells develop, Boxing
02:36Day, not actually too bad of a day to get out and about. Further showers still pushing
02:41their way in from the northwest, now progressing into Northern Ireland and southern areas of
02:46Scotland. Maybe a few wintry flakes possible over the higher ground of the Pennines and
02:49Snowdonia as well. Generally temperatures will be a touch down compared to recent days
02:56now that that cold air has spread across all areas of the UK. Closer towards average for
03:01southern areas of England, but turning a bit colder, 3-5 degrees across areas of Scotland.
03:08It will be a fairly breezy day for all of us, so if you are certainly heading out on
03:12the hills then do just take care for any Boxing Day walks. But the strongest winds
03:16are likely across the far northern isles, an area of gales severe for a time pushing
03:20their way across Shetland and Orkney and this could prove to form a bit of disruption as
03:26we head throughout the day. Otherwise do keep up to date with the full forecast on our social
03:32media sites and we will see you again here soon and enjoy your Christmas.
