26 December - National weather forecast presented by Jonathan Vautrey

00:00Hello there. As the wintry showers pushed their way in from the North West we did get
00:05an official white Christmas and these have been continuing overnight. So lovely photo
00:10here from Cumbria as the snow showers pushed in providing a dusting of snow this morning
00:14for a white boxing day. Further to the South and East we haven't quite seen the snow but
00:19the skies have been clearing to provide some wonderful sunrises and we'll retain these
00:23clear skies generally throughout the day across the Central, South Eastern areas of England.
00:27A quite nice day to get out for a boxing day walk. Further to the West and the North those
00:31wintry showers continuing, snowy in particular across areas of Scotland where we'll see 5
00:36to 10 centimetres of snow build up over the higher ground. Combine that with the strong
00:42winds and we could see some blizzard conditions across some Scottish mountain ranges throughout
00:47the day. The strongest winds though are likely to be across the Northern Isles. As this low
00:51pressure tracks its way eastwards it will bring a swathe of severe gales to Shetland,
00:56gusts above 70 mph so do just take care if you are heading out here. Otherwise temperatures
01:02throughout boxing day are a touchdown compared to where we have been now that that cold air
01:07has sweeped its way in. Certainly feeling rather cold in that brisk breeze across the
01:11North but temperatures generally more around average for the time of year to the South
01:15of England. Temperatures will be tumbling away though as we move throughout the evening
01:20particularly where we hold onto those clear skies in the far South and East. The showers
01:24continuing across Northern and Western areas and where those start falling on frozen surfaces
01:29there is the risk of ice overnight that could cause a few slips and trips if you aren't
01:34careful. As we said those temperatures are going to be tumbling down, certainly a frost
01:38possible across Scotland maybe minus 5, minus 7 degrees where we've got some lying snow
01:43but even eastern areas of England falling down towards that zero degree mark and certainly
01:47a frost is possible here as well. Over to the West you'll have just noticed this band
01:51of rain that's pushing its way into Northern Ireland and the cloud developing here as well.
01:55So whilst it will be a chilly evening the temperatures possibly just coming up slightly
02:00as we move towards dawn on Tuesday morning. It does though also mean it's going to be
02:04a fairly wet start to Tuesday across Northern Ireland with that band of rain pushing its
02:09way eastwards as it moves into the colder air ahead of it that will readily turn to
02:13snow again across areas of Scotland. Once again 5 to 10 centimetres of snow building
02:17up above 300 metres or so. Further south that will be falling as rain so it will be
02:22a fairly wet day for western areas of England and particularly Wales we could see 30 to
02:2840 millimetres of rain build up over those western upslopes. Combine that with the coastal
02:33gales that will be developing across Irish Sea coasts and it could be a fairly miserable
02:37bank holiday for some. Further to the east it will stay drier but the cloud will be building
02:43and it will be a touch milder with those winds now coming up from a southerly direction
02:47so climbing towards highs of 11 degrees into that double digit mark across southern England
02:52even 9 degrees across central Scotland and Northern Ireland. Throughout Tuesday evening
02:57then that band of rain will continue to push its way south eastwards so now moving across
03:00central south eastern areas of England. It will linger a time across northern Scotland
03:05and eventually make its way up towards Shetland and we'll see a further area of showers push
03:10in behind. It is looking to stay fairly unsettled as we move throughout the rest of the week
03:14as well so do stay up to date with the forecast and you can do that by following us on social
03:19media and we'll be back here again shortly. Bye bye.
