00:00Hi there, Saturday the 9th of September could be the hottest day of the year so far, it
00:06doesn't happen often. As the heat peaks this weekend, 32 or 33 Celsius is possible, followed
00:12by thundery showers for some. Friday afternoon, also hot but not entirely sunny, there is
00:19some high cloud around and some low cloud even across some southwestern coasts and some
00:24eastern coasts as well. There's also the possibility of a thundery shower turning up in western
00:29parts, most especially parts of Northern Ireland. These will be very isolated. For the vast
00:33majority it is a dry, bright and very warm or hot day. High 20s from northern Scotland
00:39down to the south of England and somewhere through the Midlands into south-east England
00:43we'll see 31 Celsius, so I should say 33 is Saturday. Now, towards the southwest a lot
00:51of low clouds continues to lurk on Friday evening and we're likely to see some thundery
00:57showers again move up from the south. Once more, these will be fairly elevated, some
01:03distance between the base of the cloud and the ground, so some evaporation with any rainfall.
01:07There could be some lightning around as well and any showers will be hit and miss. Many
01:12places will stay dry overnight. We've got the mist and low cloud around some coastal
01:16areas but otherwise it's clear skies and temperatures staying at 19 or even 20 Celsius in places.
01:23So some mist about first thing Saturday, some high cloud as well and some of these
01:27showers moving northwards across western parts of the country. Now, a change starts to emerge
01:33into the northwest of Scotland. It turns breezier, cloudier with some showers moving into central
01:38and northern Scotland as well as eventually parts of Northern Ireland. There'll also be
01:42some showers developing as the temperatures rise across central parts of the UK, some
01:47significant thunderstorms. Once again, even if you're in the yellow thunderstorm area
01:52of central England and east Wales, even if you're in that area, chances are you'll stay
01:58dry but there is the risk of some significant thunderstorms developing, 50 millimetres of
02:03rainfall, lightning and hail as well as gusty winds and so on. So that's across central
02:08areas as temperatures rise and temperatures will rise further compared with Friday, 32,
02:13possibly 33 Celsius. That would make it the warmest day of the year so far. It also marked
02:19the peak in the heat because we are seeing a change take place later in the weekend.
02:25This cold front in the northwest brings cooler conditions southwards through the weekend
02:30but it is slow moving. Ahead of that we keep the hot air into Sunday and an increased risk
02:36of thundery showers once again blossoming through the day on Sunday before eventually
02:42into next week. The cooler conditions from the northwest spread across the country, a
02:46significant fall in temperatures back closer to average and more changeable weather on
02:51the way.
