00:00Hello, further wintry weather expected during the next 24 hours, frost and ice for many
00:05and in some places snow. In fact an amber warning has been issued for northern Scotland
00:09because of the risk of gales, heavy snow, drifting and blizzard conditions later Tuesday.
00:14That's on top of what's already fallen, frequent snow showers as you can see started at the
00:18beginning of the week. These snow showers have continued across northern and western
00:22Scotland during Monday. This is the last 24 hours, the snow is in white and you can see
00:26those snow showers extending into Northern Ireland, North West England and then this
00:30spell of snow for Cornwall, parts of South Devon as well. That slipped away early Tuesday
00:37after a covering in parts of Cornwall. Further showers will arrive into western parts of
00:43the UK, so West Wales, North West England, Northern Ireland, Western Scotland and one
00:48or two in the far South West as well. These are likely to be rain and sleet at lower levels
00:52on and around coasts but some snow inland and especially over hills and we'll see further
00:56frequent snow showers into northern Scotland, sleet and rain more likely for coastal parts
01:01of the Northern Isles. But it looks like for the rest of the UK, sunny spells, a bright
01:06day to come but staying cold, 2 to 4 Celsius typical across the country and staying below
01:12freezing in some sheltered glens of Scotland and over northern hills as well. But it's
01:17across the north of Scotland where we are most concerned heading into the second half
01:21of Tuesday because of this area of low pressure. Now around this area of low pressure we have
01:25got some slightly milder air wrapped up so it's not going to be entirely snow but it
01:30will bring some very tricky conditions for northern Scotland. Heavy snowfall you can
01:35see organised into bands pushing into mainland northern Scotland, Aberdeenshire, the Grampians,
01:41Highlands and along with the gale force wind there's the risk of drifting snow and blizzard
01:46conditions so really treacherous conditions through the afternoon and evening for northern
01:51Scotland. More likely rain and sleet for northern Isles although over 100 metres or so still
01:56some snow and accumulations of 15 centimetres building up in a short space of time on top
02:00of what's already lying in northern Scotland. That system pushes into the North Sea. Further
02:06showers overnight into western Scotland, northern Ireland, parts of Wales and the south west
02:12and that will lead to the risk of icy patches and ice as well, a hazard for southern England
02:16where we've got very wet roads at the moment. So the surface is about first thing Wednesday
02:22a widespread frost, temperatures in many spots below freezing if not several degrees below
02:28freezing. Further wintry weather then arrives into the north and the west as we go into
02:33Wednesday. Wednesday slightly less cold so I think rain and sleet at lower levels, perhaps
02:37some hail but snow again over hills of northern Ireland, parts of Wales and perhaps the south
02:43west as well. Further snow coming into northern Scotland and these wintry showers also affecting
02:48the North Sea coast where it will be increasingly windy through the day as that area of low
02:53pressure arrives into the continent. Now for the UK as a whole degree or so less cold compared
03:01with Tuesday but it is going to be still quite chilly out there but for many actually crisp
03:05winter sunshine is expected once again especially through parts of central UK away from coasts.
03:12Then it's Wednesday night, so widespread clear spells and so once more widespread frost
03:17to start things on Thursday. The showers on Thursday will be mostly in the north and the
03:22east, brighter skies towards the west and then very gradually on Friday and into the
03:28weekend things turn milder from the west.
