00:00Hello there, welcome to your forecast for Thursday. Here are your headlines.
00:04Snow warnings in place across the hills and mountains of the north
00:07as a band of rain moves across from the Atlantic.
00:09And watch out for gales across the western side of the country.
00:12First of all though, let me take you through the next few days in terms of the bigger picture.
00:16Through Wednesday into Thursday, a ridge of high pressure and incredibly cold air.
00:20And we've got this milder zone moving in from the Atlantic, with it cloud and rain
00:24bumping up against the cold air, it will turn to snow on its leading edge.
00:28And then behind it, the air turns cold yet again, with a cold north-westerly undercut
00:33bringing with it snow showers, so the risk of snow and ice.
00:36You can see there's a warning in place through Thursday and into Friday.
00:39And then waiting in the wings for the weekend, the air turns less cold,
00:42but always the chance of some rain and a stronger wind.
00:46Your warning zone through Thursday then.
00:48Anywhere from the north-west highlands down towards Pennine districts,
00:51above around 300-400 metres, expect some significant accumulations,
00:55the risk of blizzard conditions, but we will see some slushy deposits
00:58even at lower levels for a time.
01:01So that's the situation through Thursday, and the reason why the air is so cold.
01:06The winds are just falling light through Wednesday night.
01:09We'll see temperatures slowly plummeting, so one or two showers along this eastern side here
01:14with a keen breeze, but inland we could see some mists and fog forming,
01:18some freezing fog at that, as temperatures dip well below freezing through the night.
01:23Now ahead of it, we'll see clearer skies, but then you can see this is the system coming in from the west,
01:28so by around five, six o'clock in the morning, the first of the rain will have arrived across Northern Ireland,
01:33more cloud ahead of it.
01:35Here are your temperatures. It's bitterly cold in rural spots,
01:38values dipping down to minus six to minus ten degrees Celsius,
01:41so a bitter start to the day on Thursday.
01:44And dry for central and eastern areas of Scotland, that's not going to last though.
01:48A similar situation for northern England, much of Wales,
01:51but you can see across the west there some heavy bursts of rain,
01:54and that rain gradually just pushing towards the western side of Scotland,
01:58as well as west Wales and the west country, and those winds coming in from the south,
02:02so this is your milder segment of air.
02:05Ahead of it though, it's so cold.
02:07Watch out for the mists and fog, freezing fog at that, which will be slow to clear,
02:10but also some brighter skies to start the day.
02:13And certainly for east Anglia, as well as the southeast,
02:15you'll hang on to the drier weather until afternoon time.
02:18So you can see the rain moving in, you can see where the snow is,
02:20even at lower levels for a time, and this rain continues its passage eastwards.
02:24Behind it, we'll see a rash of showers, a showery burst of rain,
02:28just moving across northern Ireland, as well as western Scotland.
02:31And again, eventually this rain will reach east Anglia, as well as the southeast,
02:35with some heavy bursts just behind it, and the winds will be strong through rush hour
02:39on Thursday across that eastern side of the country,
02:42with a blustery breeze to follow, and also those wintry showers.
02:46It's going to be a colder day.
02:48So that's daytime on Thursday.
02:50Through Thursday evening and overnight, the rain clears towards the southeast.
02:54You can see these showers turning more and more so to snow.
02:57So a snow and ice warning in place across the western and northern part of the country into Friday.
03:03And those showers will continue as we head into Friday,
03:05with some clearer skies towards the east.
03:07Watch out for temperatures falling again at sub-zero.
03:10And again, some showery bursts of rain continue their passage down towards the southeast
03:14through the early hours of the morning into rush hour on Friday.
03:18Elsewhere, those showers continue through the day, just piling in on quite a blustery wind
03:23and a mix of hail, sleet, snow, thunder, as well as lightning.
03:28So there's lots going on, and into the weekend it turns wet yet again.
03:32Bye-bye.
