29 April - National weather forecast presented by Alex Deakin

00:00Thanks for joining me for this national weather update.
00:02It's a lot of cloud around today,
00:04but most places have been dry and bright.
00:06And for many, it'll be another fine day on Friday.
00:09High pressure continues to bring this dry weather.
00:12But we are going to see some subtle changes
00:16as we go into the weekend.
00:17Weather fronts and low pressure systems
00:19just starting to edge in and will eventually
00:22oust our area of high pressure during the weekend.
00:25More on that in a moment, because for the time being,
00:28high pressure is still around.
00:29Still a lot of cloud across these eastern parts of England
00:32sticking around overnight.
00:34A small chance of a shower or two,
00:35actually, across East Anglia and the southeast.
00:37Greater chance of one or two showers over northern Scotland
00:40through the night.
00:41But for most, it is dry and we'll
00:43have, I think, that cloud melting away in many places.
00:46So largely clear skies, which will allow, again,
00:48temperatures to tumble.
00:49A hint of blue there on the chart for Northern Ireland.
00:51Pockets of frost over northern England and southern Scotland
00:54too.
00:55Certainly rural areas dropping down to freezing,
00:57maybe as low as minus 2 or minus 3.
00:59Towns and cities well down into single figures.
01:03A fresh start to Friday once more.
01:05But for many, it will be a sunny start to the day.
01:09Now, again, some places are going
01:10to keep a lot of cloud, particularly
01:12eastern parts of England.
01:13If anything, the cloud thickening once more
01:15through the day across the southeast.
01:17Could be quite cool feeling here with a bit of a brisk breeze,
01:20even the small chance of a shower.
01:22Certainly the risk of a shower over eastern parts
01:24of Scotland during the day, where
01:26the cloud will bubble up.
01:27But for the majority, it's another dry day.
01:31During Friday, with good spells of sunshine,
01:33probably a sunnier day compared to Thursday for most.
01:37And with a bit more blue sky, most experiencing light winds,
01:40it's going to feel a bit warmer as well.
01:42Temperatures far from spectacular
01:44for the time of year, close to average,
01:45but maybe getting up to 70, perhaps
01:4718 on the west coast of Scotland.
01:49That's pretty warm.
01:50Again, eastern areas, particularly
01:51if it stays cloudy, temperatures are
01:53going to struggle somewhat to get even into the teens.
01:57During Friday evening, I think we'll
01:58see the cloud again tending to melt away.
02:00Still a small chance of a shower over eastern Scotland,
02:03but for most, dry and clear.
02:04So again, that recipe for things to turn chilly,
02:07particularly across the heart of England,
02:09eastern parts of Wales, a touch of frost in rural areas.
02:12But further north, we're starting to see a change.
02:14Talked about that weather front earlier,
02:16starting to move in during Saturday.
02:18By the end of the day, perhaps you
02:20rain through the central belt and towards Belfast.
02:22And certainly a very wet and increasingly windy day
02:25for western parts of Scotland, pretty grim over the Highlands.
02:28But for the bulk of England and Wales,
02:31the first day of the long weekend
02:32is a cracking day, dry, bright, good spells of sunshine.
02:36Again, some cloud in the east, but probably
02:37feeling a bit warmer here compared to recent days
02:40in the sunshine, 15, 16, maybe 17 or 18.
02:43But a cooler day with that rain pushing
02:46into parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.
02:48That set of weather fronts bringing that cloud and rain
02:51will continue to drift southwards and eventually
02:53push away this high pressure that's been with us all week.
02:56Now, it's a fairly weak area of low pressure.
03:00The isobar is not particularly close.
03:02And it is fizzling out as it sinks southwards.
03:05But it will bring more cloud to England and Wales
03:07on Sunday with one or two showers.
03:09And a mixed bag, it looks like, for Bank Holiday
03:12Monday with a few showers, but many places dry and bright.
