00:00Welcome to your afternoon weather update from the Met Office.
00:03Warm and sunny for some, dull and rather cool for others.
00:07The reasons for the contrast, a big area of low pressure.
00:10The satellite picture over the past day or so
00:12showing this big swirl.
00:14It's low pressure sitting down to the southwest,
00:17not been moving very far.
00:18And its weather fronts also haven't been moving very far.
00:21This one kind of stagnating across the east,
00:23generating a lot of cloud and quite a few outbreaks of rain
00:27as well.
00:28Now, that rain is kind of fizzling out
00:30through the rest of the day.
00:31But it's likely to stay pretty dull and damp
00:33under this weather front across parts of eastern England
00:36since northern England's rain has drizzled on and off
00:39through the day.
00:40There's a few showers close to the low pressure
00:42across Devon and Cornwall, some heavy ones,
00:43even a possibility of a rumble of thunder,
00:45particularly for Cornwall and south Devon.
00:48And later on this afternoon, we could
00:49spark some heavier showers over parts of the Midlands too.
00:52So some downpours possible here.
00:54But for many other chunks of the country,
00:57mid and north Wales, much of the Midlands, southeast England,
01:00northern Ireland, it's generally dry and bright
01:02with some sunshine.
01:03There is some mist and low cloud clinging
01:05to the east of Scotland.
01:06That's suppressing the temperatures,
01:08struggling to get much above 13 or 14 on the coast itself.
01:13But top of the temperature tree this afternoon,
01:15probably the Murray Firth, 24, maybe even 25 degrees Celsius.
01:19Feels quite warm in the sunny spells.
01:21Of course, the Midlands, south Wales, and southern England
01:24as well, it's cooler where we've
01:25got that more persistent cloud from that old weather front,
01:28which will continue to fizzle out through this evening.
01:31Maybe some patchy rain hitting into parts of southern Scotland.
01:34Later in the night, we could start
01:35to see some rain just returning back towards East Anglia.
01:38But for many, it'll be a dry night, a bit misty, murky
01:41in the south.
01:41One or two fog patches are possible.
01:43Temperatures mostly holding up in double digits,
01:46maybe a little cooler than recent nights
01:48over northern Scotland, single figures here.
01:50Again, with that easterly breeze just
01:52generating a little bit of mist and low cloud
01:55on the east coast at times, that will
01:56be a feature of the weather.
01:58Some har again and fret on the east coast of England.
02:01Again, parts of northeast England
02:03and down towards East Anglia like
02:05to be fairly drab through Thursday.
02:07Rain and drizzle again for parts of Lincolnshire and Norfolk
02:10especially.
02:11That's going to drift into parts of the Midlands, north Wales,
02:14northwest England late in the day.
02:16Further south, it's a different feel.
02:18Yes, many places dry and bright, but certainly
02:21come the afternoon, some heavy, even thundery showers breaking
02:24out here in and around the M4 corridor.
02:27So some heavy downpours likely to watch out
02:29for during Thursday afternoon.
02:31Again, most of Scotland, Northern Ireland dry,
02:33but a greater chance of some showers tomorrow
02:35for Northern Ireland and one or two for Western Scotland.
02:38Again, though, it'll be northern parts of Scotland.
02:41See the top temperatures 23, maybe 24 degrees Celsius.
02:44Still a chance we could get to 25.
02:45The breeze from the sea, eastern coasts
02:47will be cooler and cooler while we've
02:49got the cloud and the outbreaks of rain over the Midlands.
02:51In the south, with a bit of brightness,
02:53temperatures again getting into the low 20s.
02:55So the weather's pretty patchy at the moment,
02:57but one thing for sure, parts of northern Scotland
02:59seeing the highest temperatures.
03:01This map shows temperatures compared
03:03to the mid-May average.
03:05Large chunks of the country close to that average,
03:07but warmer than average in Northern Ireland,
03:09particularly warm over parts of northern Scotland.
03:12The fine weather continuing here through Thursday evening.
03:15One or two showers maybe over the Highlands
03:17drifting towards the Western Isles.
03:18A bit more of that rain over northwest England
03:21spreading more widely over North Wales
03:23during Thursday evening.
03:24Thundery showers in the south tending to fade away.
03:27More showers to come as we head into the weekend,
03:29but some signs of higher pressure, drier weather
03:32as we head into next week.
03:34For more on that, you want to be watching the 10-day trend.
03:37Aidan will be recording that.
03:38It'll be available on YouTube by Wednesday afternoon.
