23 December - National weather forecast presented by Greg Dewhurst

00:00Hello there. If you're travelling this Christmas Eve, we do have some very strong winds, particularly
00:05across the north of the UK, and outbreaks of rain, which will also be quite heavy across
00:09the west. And we can see low pressure dominating the weather pattern at the moment, only replaced
00:14on Christmas Day by another area of low pressure, bringing some wet and windy weather to many
00:19parts and then something a little colder and brighter as we move into Boxing Day, but then
00:25further low pressures moving in as we head into Wednesday.
00:28So, looking at the details for the rest of Christmas Eve. Cloudy across much of England
00:32and Wales, outbreaks of rain. Could be heavy at times across parts of Wales. Brighter further
00:36north, northern England, north Wales, into Northern Ireland and Scotland, seeing some
00:40spells of sunshine and some showers too, which could be on the heavy side. But it is the
00:45winds across the northern half of the UK of focus for today's weather. Guss is 60, 70
00:51miles an hour across TransPennine's routes here and up into northern parts of Scotland
00:55as well. 60, 70 mile an hour gusts are possible. So, Met Office warnings are out for the rest
01:01of the day. So, do take care if you are travelling and an exceptionally mild day, particularly
01:06across England and Wales. We'll see temperatures 13, 14, 15 Celsius, perhaps close to 16 Celsius,
01:13making it one of the warmest Christmas Eves on record. Just some colder air filtering
01:18in across parts of Scotland here, temperatures dropping as the afternoon goes on. Feeling
01:22quite chilly with those strong and gusty winds, which continue through into the evening time.
01:28Further rain across southern counties of England and Wales. Elsewhere, we'll see some clearer
01:32spells. Showery rain, northern Ireland, northern England, some of this heavy at times. Under
01:36the clearer skies, as that cold air sets in, we could see some icy stretches and a frost
01:41developing across parts of Scotland and further showers across the northern isles too. And
01:46here is where we'll see the lowest temperatures getting close to freezing, under the cloud
01:50and the wind staying up, generally mild and frost free, to take us into Christmas Day.
01:55So, a wet start across parts of England and Wales in the south. This rain slowly pushes
02:00its way north and eastward through the day, an early brightness for eastern England. Elsewhere,
02:04showery outbreaks of rain and as this part of the low pressure bumps into that colder
02:08air across Scotland, we could see over the higher ground, above 200 to 300 metres, some
02:13of that rain turning to snow. So, officially, it's quite likely to be a white Christmas
02:18but the vast majority of us, it will be a grey and wet and breezy Christmas. That rain
02:23turning heavy at times as we move through the afternoon across parts of south-west England
02:28and Wales. And temperatures still mild, 13, 14 Celsius across southern parts of England
02:34and Wales. A little bit cooler further north, a chilly day across some northern parts of
02:38Scotland as those winds also remain fairly brisk here too. Into the evening time on Christmas
02:44Day, further blustery showers across Scotland, northern Ireland, northern England. That rain
02:48slowly pushing away from parts of England and Wales across the south-east, which allows
02:53it to turn a little drier to end the day. And that's sign of things to come for Boxing
02:58Day. A chilly start, some icy stretches to begin with, particularly across the north.
03:03Blustery wintry showers across northern Scotland. For the vast majority, dry, plenty of a sunny
03:09spell. So, cloud increasing from the south-west with Wednesday's wet and windy weather starting
03:14to move in. Mid-August warnings already in force for this weather on Wednesday. And just
03:18bringing some outbreaks of rain into the far south-west as we move through the afternoon
03:23and evening on Boxing Day. And temperatures generally lower and nearer to average, 6 to
03:279 Celsius. Just a little bit above across the south-west as the cloud thickens here,
03:32around 10 or 11 degrees Celsius. So, the main message over the next few days is that we
03:39continue to see some very strong winds if you're travelling through Christmas Eve. Further
03:43wet weather as we move through Christmas Day, but it does turn calmer into Boxing Day.
