23 December - National weather forecast presented by Greg Dewhurst
Transcript
00:00Hello, Christmas Eve was exceptionally mild for much of the UK and with strong and gusty
00:06winds as well. And that's all thanks to an area of low pressure which is moving away
00:11at the moment. However, through Christmas Day, another area of low pressure moves in
00:15bringing some wet weather, but the winds won't be quite as strong for many. And then Boxing
00:21Day, a brief ridge of high pressure giving a more settled day ahead of some wet and windy
00:26weather moving back in for Wednesday. So, the weather over the festive period staying
00:31very changeable indeed. Strong winds continuing across the north of the UK through this evening
00:38and into the early hours, though eventually they do start to ease. But it does stay breezy,
00:42particularly around the coasts. Under clear skies tonight, we'll see a frost developing
00:47some icy stretches across parts of Scotland. Generally elsewhere, we'll see quite a lot
00:51of cloud around to keep temperatures up. Showery rain across parts of Northern Ireland, South
00:55West Scotland, stretching into Northern England. One or two heavier bursts possible and light
01:00rain and drizzle still continuing to affect southern counties of England and Wales. Temperatures
01:06here, 11 or 12 Celsius, are still well above where they should be. In fact, daytime temperatures
01:11should be lower than this. Elsewhere, generally mild and then temperatures close to if not
01:16below freezing in those clearest skies across Scotland. So, blue skies to start the day
01:21here on Christmas Day. A frosty start, icy stretches too. Elsewhere, generally fairly
01:26cloudy, few glimmers of brightness across some eastern parts of England. But this cloud
01:30and rain quickly stretches across much of England and Wales. Some yellow on there indicating
01:35some heavier bursts at times too, particularly over the hills in the west. Brighter skies,
01:41Northern England, Northern Ireland, parts of Scotland into the afternoon. Though this
01:44area of showery rain across Scotland will bump into that colder air across central and
01:49northern areas and that rain turning to snow quite quickly through the day. We could see
01:54around 5 to 10 centimetres above 300 metres, perhaps some accumulations a little lower
02:00than this. So, white Christmas officially, but for the vast majority of us it will be
02:05fairly cloudy, breezy, grey and damp. And temperatures under the cloud and rain up to
02:10around 13 or 14 Celsius once more. A little cooler further north, 8 or 9, but dropping
02:16as the afternoon goes on. Christmas Day evening time, further cloud and rain in England and
02:22Wales, but this slowly pushing its way south-eastwards, allowing some clearer spells to develop. Showery
02:27rain across Scotland, Northern England also pushing out into the North Sea. So, by the
02:31end of the night, many places dry, lengthy clear skies and that will allow temperatures
02:36to dip away lower than they have been of late as well. Just 3 or 4 Celsius for many, a little
02:42higher across some southern counties here. And again, some icy stretches developing
02:46central and northern Scotland, brisk northerly breeze here as snow showers move in from the
02:51north. So, a different picture Boxing Day, plenty of sunshine to greet us, some icy stretches
02:58too. Clouds slowly though thickening from the south-west as the day goes on. Devon and
03:02Cornwall seeing some rain reappear here as we move into the afternoon, but for many a
03:08great day to be outside. Plenty of sunshine, particularly across the northern half of
03:14the UK. Still some wintry showers affecting northern Scotland and northern Isles and a
03:17brisk northerly breeze here. And temperatures back down to nearer where they should be for
03:22the time of year, 6 or 7 Celsius, perhaps still 9 or 10 across southern counties across
03:28the far south-west, perhaps even 11 Celsius. This cloud and rain begins to move in and
03:33that's a sign of things to come as we move into Wednesday. Some wet and windy weather
03:38spreading northwards. Met Office warnings already in place for Wednesday for strong
03:43winds, heavy rain and even some snow across parts of Scotland. So, it is worth staying
03:47up to date with the forecast over the coming days. I'll see you again soon.
