9 December - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:00Hello, it was a very cold start to the day in places with temperatures at Bentsen in
00:06Oxfordshire minus 9 Celsius overnight, parts of Wales and North West England minus 8, minus
00:127 for parts of Scotland, a widespread frost and we've seen further wintry weather. Now
00:17this is a repeat here of the last 24 hours running from Thursday morning and it shows
00:23rain in blue, snow in white. You can see a mixture of rain and sleet around coastal areas,
00:28snow inland and some organisation to the showers at times. Thursday night across Scotland
00:32for example and some wintry showers into East Anglia and the South East as we began Friday.
00:37But increasingly for the rest of Friday the showers will be more focused towards the North
00:41and the West rather than the East, the winds changing direction very subtly. And so for
00:46Northern Scotland we can expect further showers of snow to build up over the hills in particular
00:52but even at lower levels some further accumulations in places. Also showers feeding into Northern
00:56Ireland, parts of North West England, North and West Wales. Again rain and sleet at lower
01:01levels, snow inland and especially over hills some covering likely. But actually away from
01:08these areas plenty of crisp winter sunshine, hardly any showers reaching central and eastern
01:13parts this afternoon. Temperatures though 3 or 4 Celsius at their highest and in some
01:19shelter spots where we get some stubborn freezing fog patches, where we get some elevation
01:23temperatures staying below freezing. Then the widespread frost returns as we head into
01:29Friday night and with that chill in the air and further showers feeding in for Northern
01:34Scotland, western fringes of the UK as well, we can expect a small covering of snow. For
01:40example Snowdonia, higher parts of North West England, perhaps a tiny amount at lower levels.
01:45But of greater concern are the icy patches where we see those showers in the North and
01:50the West by dawn on Saturday. A widespread frost, temperatures in towns and cities, minus
01:563, minus 4 Celsius in some shelter spots just like last night, well below that, minus 8,
02:02minus 9 and for some snow covered parts of Scotland with some clear skies, minus 10 or
02:07below. So watch out for some slippery surfaces in the North and the West first thing Saturday.
02:13Further showers feeding in for a time, perhaps reaching the South West of England as well.
02:16Rain and sleet at lower levels and around the coast, snow perhaps over Dartmoor and
02:20Exmoor if those showers reach those locations. But otherwise for central and eastern parts,
02:25plenty of clear winter skies and again it's a cold afternoon. Has to be said there will
02:31be some freezing fog patches that in places could last into the afternoon, say for southern
02:35and central parts of England where that happens, poor visibility and temperatures in some spots
02:41not above zero. And also we'll see some more organised areas of wintry showers feeding
02:47into northern and eastern Scotland, so an increased risk for the likes of eastern and
02:52southeastern Scotland of some snow and ice on Saturday night. Again, relatively small
02:59accumulations, this is showery stuff but there's snow continuing to build up over hills in
03:04parts of Scotland. And really it's more of the same, roughly, as we go into Sunday we've
03:10still got cold air in place, we've still got low pressure meandering across the UK,
03:16so that's going to cause shower formation and those showers are preferentially going
03:20to form where we get the winds coming in from the sea and that's quite a complicated picture
03:25where those winds are coming in because of small deviations in that area of low pressure.
03:31But there is a signal increasingly for an area of showers to affect parts of southeast
03:36England later Sunday and into Monday and if those showers do occur, some differences
03:43in the computer models at this stage about exactly where and how much of these showers
03:48will affect the southeast, but if they do occur, well a small amount of snow in the
03:53southeast of England of course can cause considerable disruption. So there's a very low probability
03:58of medium scale impacts from that snow in the southeast of England by Sunday and into
04:05Monday. That's something we'll certainly keep a close eye on here at the Met Office,
04:09but for now that's all from me. Bye bye.
