1 December - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:00It's the first day of meteorological winter and there's plenty of wintry weather to talk
00:05about.
00:06First of all, a widespread frost up and down the country, some freezing fog patches, some
00:10icy patches as well in the south of England for example where we saw the rain sleet and
00:15snow on Thursday, some icy patches also for Northern Ireland, eastern parts and northern
00:20parts of the UK where we continue to see a feed of rain sleet and snow showers.
00:26But increasingly the showers will be across the north of Scotland, western Scotland, parts
00:31of Northern Ireland through the day, perhaps the odd one clipping, west Wales.
00:34These are a mixture of rain sleet, hail and snow with the snow mainly over hills.
00:41Fewer showers in the far south because the low pressure that we saw on Thursday having
00:46pulled away has cleared to clear skies and the odd freezing fog patch across some central
00:52parts and also some central parts of Scotland could persist into the afternoon, staying
00:57very cold where that happens.
00:58Otherwise plenty of dry, bright weather on this first day of December.
01:04Temperatures only making it up to 2-4 Celsius generally and where we see any persistent
01:10freezing fog, where we see snow-covered hills for example, those temperatures not going
01:15above zero degrees.
01:17Bright winds though and where we've got some sunshine, a pleasant, albeit cold, winter's day.
01:24Then into the evening we'll see those temperatures fall away quite quickly once again.
01:29Another area of low cloud develops across parts of the Midlands, southern and southeastern
01:34England and some freezing fog patches once again in places, especially east Wales, parts
01:39of the Midlands up into the southern part of Northern England, one or two for central
01:43and southwest Scotland as well.
01:46We'll see a feed of showers into the far west of the UK, the odd one clipping Kent
01:51as well and East Anglia.
01:53These showers again a mix of rain and sleet with hill snow in places but mostly they'll
01:58be restricted to coast, however, where we see those showers of course, always a chance
02:03of some icy patches first thing this weekend because it's going to be another widespread
02:08frosty one with temperatures in urban areas, minus 2-4 Celsius.
02:13In the countryside, even lower than that, below minus 5 Celsius in places and it's going
02:19to be a slow start as those temperatures only gradually pick up on Saturday morning, especially
02:25once again where we've got some low cloud and some freezing fog.
02:28But generally light winds and some sunshine out there on Saturday, so plenty of dry and
02:34bright weather.
02:35We've got low pressure over the far north of the UK, a very slack area of low pressure
02:41but this area of low pressure is going to start to influence things on Saturday and
02:46more especially into Sunday, bringing a return to showers and some longer spells of rain
02:52by the end of the weekend and a return to milder air in some places.
02:57But we keep the cold conditions certainly throughout much of Saturday and plenty of
03:01dry and bright weather for the north and the east whilst a feed of cloud and some showers
03:05pushes into the west as the day progresses.
03:09The winds now coming from the southwest mean that it will be less cold in the far southwest
03:14but as you can see, 1-3 Celsius elsewhere below freezing, again where we've got some
03:20persistent freezing fog and where we've got some snow cover.
03:23Then that feed of showers increasingly turns to longer spells of rain by the end of the
03:27weekend.
03:28The milder air develops across southern parts, it stays cold and frosty in the north.
03:33Bye bye.
