05 December - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.

00:00Hi there. The cold but brighter weather that we saw at the start of the month widely has
00:05been restricted to the far north as we've begun the week, but that returns more widely
00:10through the start of Tuesday and the Atlantic-driven weather eases for now, although this is a
00:17taste of what's to come later in the week. We've got some wet weather first thing across
00:20much of England and Wales. That turns more showery through the morning, however, could
00:25be some issues first thing, I think, for south-east Scotland, parts of north-east England. Also
00:29potential for issues for northern Scotland, ice warning in force here through the morning
00:33because of showers feeding in overnight and a cold, frosty start to the day. But by the
00:39time we get to 4pm on Tuesday, we've got plenty of sunshine for Scotland, for northern England,
00:45for much of Wales and the south-west, still a few showers here and there, for example
00:48this line of showers running down the Irish Sea, perhaps clipping Pembrokeshire and Cornwall.
00:53Also some showery rain continuing into eastern England, into the Midlands, East Anglia, south-east.
00:59That's turning more showery as the day goes on after the persistent wet weather as we
01:03start. But for many, it is a brighter afternoon compared with how we saw things on Monday.
01:10With the sunny spells and lighter winds, it's going to feel a bit more pleasant, even if
01:13technically temperatures will be a touch lower. 2-4C in the north, 6-9C further south. Now
01:21into the evening and the showery rain across eastern England tends to fizzle away, still
01:26some areas of cloud drifting south, but for many, clear skies developing and with those
01:31widespread clear skies comes widespread frost and, in one or two spots, some icy patches.
01:38Also some freezing fog. You can see the freezing fog patches here across central and south-east
01:43Scotland, perhaps through the Vale of York, for example. So some poor visibility first
01:47thing tomorrow and some low temperatures as well to contend with. Tansend City, 0-4C,
01:53in rural spots as low as at minus 12C across some sheltered parts of Scotland. So cold,
02:00but in many places bright start to the day, although the freezing fog patches where they
02:04do occur could be slow to clear. Then we keep the sunshine across eastern parts and northern
02:09parts of the UK into the afternoon, whilst the cloud builds further west and we'll see
02:14wet and windy weather return to Northern Ireland and western fringes of Scotland, England and
02:20that wet and windy weather is going to take over. It's also going to bring a return to
02:25milder conditions. You can see the temperatures there up to 11C, but we keep the chill further
02:30east, 3-5C and as that colder air mixes with the incoming rainfall, expect a period of
02:36hill snow across northern parts of the UK on Wednesday night and into the start of Thursday
02:40before the rain and milder air takes over completely. More details on that aspect of
02:45the forecast, of course, covered in the Met Office week ahead forecast, which you can
02:49find on our YouTube channel. But here's a sample of what's expected through the rest
02:53of the week. Areas of low pressure coming through, one after the other, bringing a return
02:58to Atlantic-driven conditions, so wetter, windier and with rising temperatures. Bye-bye.
