00:00Hello, a significant and relatively long-lasting cold spell is on the way. It's already turned
00:06colder out there as easterly winds arrived during the weekend. Those easterly winds continue
00:11in places during Monday night, continuing to bring some showers into the east and for
00:15some central areas. But increasingly, the winds are going to be changing direction across
00:20the northern half of the UK, coming instead from the north. That will ultimately bring
00:24snow. But for the time being, those showers are going to be falling mostly as rain with
00:30some hill snow for the north of Scotland and where we'll get some clear spells overnight.
00:33It's going to be chilly, temperatures dipping below freezing, a frost in places, particularly
00:38for parts of Northern Ireland, North Wales, parts of the Midlands as well, first thing
00:42Tuesday. There'll still be some areas of cloud across southern and eastern parts of the country.
00:48The cloud in the south will disappear as the northerly winds arrive and actually those
00:52northerly winds will contain less cloud than the easterlies that we've seen over the last
00:56couple of days. So brighter skies are arriving in many places, but also those winds are going
01:01to be bringing a significant chill. At this stage, 4 or 5 Celsius in the north, 6 to 8
01:06Celsius further south. But colder air is on the way for later in the week. Now on Tuesday
01:13night, the northerly winds will increasingly bring snow to lower levels across northern
01:18Scotland. There's air coming directly from the Arctic and as a result, the snow is starting
01:22to build up as we go into Tuesday night over parts of northern Scotland. Elsewhere, mostly
01:29clear spells, some showers around eastern and western fringes, but a good chunk of clear
01:34skies across central and southern Scotland, Northern Ireland, western England and Wales.
01:38Where we see that, temperatures falling a few degrees below freezing, if not more in
01:42some sheltered rural spots. So a fairly sharp frost to start things off on Wednesday, especially
01:48for western areas. A bit more cloud in the east and that breeze will keep a widespread
01:53frost at bay, but there will still be some showers across eastern England, Northern Ireland
01:57as well. These showers mostly falling as rain, but some snow over the hills. However, for
02:01northern Scotland, the showers continue to fall as snow and we're expecting 2 to 5 centimetres
02:06to build up at lower levels, 5 to 10 over the hills, perhaps more over some higher peaks
02:12and as a result, a yellow warning in force for snow because it could cause some impacts
02:17for northern Scotland. That's the area most affected by snow on Wednesday. Elsewhere,
02:22actually, some places not seeing any showers because it's going to be blue skies for much
02:26of southern Scotland into much of northern, central and western England and Wales. Some
02:31showers affecting Irish sea coasts, but largely these will be falling as rain. Wednesday night
02:37then brings another widespread frost. Look out for some icy patches first thing, where
02:42we see showers come and go overnight, but there'll be further wintry weather to come
02:47during Thursday, Friday and the weekend. Much more on that in the Met Office weekend forecast,
02:52which you can find on YouTube.
