24 February - National weather forecast presented by Luke Miall.

00:00Hello again, we've got some cold and wintry weather to come over the next 24 hours. For
00:05Scotland and Northern Ireland we have snow and lightning warnings in force and that's
00:10all down to some pretty severe weather. Now this is the earliest snow and rain map you
00:15can see where we've already starting to see that rain turning to snow across the higher
00:19ground. This is the cold front which is starting to push its way in, falling as rain initially
00:24but up over the higher ground it is starting to turn to snow and we've seen that through
00:28much of the day so far. But it's going to continue to turn to snow as it tracks its
00:33way southwards so fast forward a few hours and that cold air really starting to filter
00:38in. You can see the snow showers feeding in behind so for many of us it is set to turn
00:43pretty cold over the next 24 hours. Now eventually that cold front will start to clear away but
00:49it's the snow and lightning that we're keeping a close eye on. This is the area that's covered
00:54by that warning. Widely within this zone we could see 1-7cm of snow away from the immediate
01:00coastlines but it's up over the hills and mountains of Scotland that we could see as
01:03much as 10-20cm. All of that snow and those snow showers combined with strong winds, gusts
01:09of 45-55mph means that visibility will be poor. There will be blizzards within this
01:15zone as well and as well as that we'll have some frequent lightning. Now this warning
01:19is in force from Wednesday evening right the way through until Thursday evening. So let's
01:25take a look at the details there and this is the cold front continuing to track its
01:28way southwards. We'll see some heavy bursts of rain as it pushes across England and Wales.
01:33Perhaps a little bit of sleet on its back edge up over the Welsh mountains for example,
01:37perhaps over the Peak District as well. Behind it then we'll see frequent snow showers pushing
01:42their way through and temperatures really taking a tumble. But it's in this area through
01:46Thursday morning that we could see up to 10-20cm over the higher ground. Frequent lightning
01:52as well combined with those strong winds as I say will lead to blizzards. Once the rain
01:56has cleared across south east England it's a day of sunshine and showers. Wintry showers
02:00in places, hail, sleet, a little bit of snow possible as well. Temperatures a little bit
02:05below where they should be for the time of year and feeling colder when you factor in
02:09the strength of that wind. As we go through Thursday evening we will continue to see quite
02:15frequent snow showers across Scotland, easing into northern England as well so we could
02:20see some accumulations over the Pennines for a time. Eventually they'll start to ease away
02:24as we start to see a ridge of high pressure building in. So by the morning on Friday we
02:29will see a few places having a touch of frost as those winds start to ease down. Temperatures
02:34in our towns and cities staying just above freezing but I suspect in the countryside
02:38it will be a little bit colder than that. So for Friday then we've got this ridge of
02:43high pressure building in and this high will stay close by across southern areas through
02:47Saturday and into Sunday as well. But out towards the west you can see the isobars picking
02:51up and tightening once again so that breeze will start to strengthen and we will see the
02:56potential for some fronts just grazing into the north west so at the risk of some wet
03:00weather across northern and western areas through the weekend whereas towards the south
03:04east I think it will tend to stay dry. But going back to Friday it is set to be a fine
03:10day for most places. As I say frost to start with but for most places we'll see lengthy
03:15spells of sunshine through much of the day and our temperatures are round about where
03:19they should be for the latter stages of February. Of course with the weather coming up for the
03:23weekend you can stay up to date with all the latest across our social media channels and
03:28I'll see you again very soon. Take care.
