00:00Hello, welcome to your National Weather Update.
00:03The cold winds are strengthening.
00:05Going to feel pretty bitter across much of the country
00:08during Thursday.
00:09A big swirl of cloud earlier on Wednesday
00:12on the satellite image.
00:12That is an area of low pressure.
00:15The low itself is drifting steadily out into the North Sea.
00:19And as it does so, the isobar squeezing together,
00:21the wind strengthening, and also coming down from the north,
00:25introducing colder air right across the land.
00:28And as I said, quite a bitter feel
00:30with that wind during Thursday.
00:32Let's get back to Wednesday night,
00:34though, because the low is steadily moving in,
00:36bringing showers across most areas.
00:38Most places seeing rain, but increasingly
00:40turning to snow over parts of northern Scotland.
00:42There is a snow warning in place here.
00:44And we also have wind warnings for parts
00:46of Northern Ireland, North Wales, and Northwest England,
00:49getting very gusty here as we go through the night.
00:52Gusts of 50, 60 around some coasts in Northwest England,
00:55North Wales, maybe even 70 miles an hour.
00:57Also getting very blustery across the Northwest
01:00of Scotland.
01:00So it's going to be a windy night with showers rattling
01:04through and temperatures dropping down
01:07lower than last night, but still most places above freezing.
01:11However, it could turn icy with that wintry weather
01:13coming into Scotland.
01:14Some heavy snow still here during Thursday morning,
01:18parts of the year, 96 in particular,
01:20seeing some heavy snow for a time.
01:23Elsewhere, it'll mostly be rain showers, maybe
01:25some wintriness in the showers drifting
01:26across southern Scotland and the hills of northern England.
01:30Much of southern England, after maybe a cloudy start,
01:33seeing sunny spells during Thursday.
01:35It'll be late in the day before we see some showers coming down
01:37here.
01:38So not as many showers overall compared to Wednesday.
01:41And most places will see some sunny spells.
01:44But we'll all have that cold wind blowing.
01:48In the sunshine in the south, we might get up to double figures,
01:50maybe 11 or 12.
01:51But for most, we're in single figures.
01:53And when you add on that wind, well, it really
01:56will feel bitter.
01:58During Thursday evening, we'll continue
02:00with a mixture of clear spells and showers.
02:03And the clearer skies will allow frost to form.
02:05There is the threat of some wet weather
02:07just coming in along the south coast of England.
02:09So it looks fairly wet as we head into Friday
02:12across the Channel Isles.
02:13But elsewhere, largely clear skies,
02:15and we'll see a more extensive frost to start Friday.
02:19The winds won't be as strong.
02:21So that will allow the temperatures
02:23to drop even in towns and cities across northern England,
02:25northern Ireland, Scotland, down close to or a touch
02:28below freezing.
02:29More winter showers coming into the far north.
02:31So again, it could be icy here.
02:33Wet weather in the south, just close to the south coast.
02:36Some uncertainty about how far that is going to move.
02:38It should help to head away as we go through the day.
02:42It's going to bring some wet and windy weather to parts of France,
02:45that weather system.
02:46Elsewhere, a few showers on Friday,
02:48but a lot of fine weather as well.
02:50The wind's still noticeable, but not as strong.
02:54Temperatures similar to Thursday's.
02:56So 8, 9, 10, maybe 11 or 12 across the south.
02:59But feeling chilly in the wind, but perhaps not as cold
03:02because the winds won't be as strong.
03:04Still very gusty, though, across the northeast,
03:06where we will continue to see some wintry showers coming
03:09in during Thursday, during Friday evening, rather.
03:13Those showers will tend to finally ease away
03:15as we head into the weekend.
03:17Low pressure scoots away.
03:18And actually, little area of high pressure moves in,
03:21bringing most places a fine day on Saturday.
03:23But we're still in the cold air, so it isn't going to be warm.
03:26And we'll start with a frost.
03:27These weather fronts just gradually edging in during Sunday
03:31will bring cloud and patchy rain.
03:33And eventually, they'll introduce some milder air as well.
