00:00Welcome to your national weather update from the Met Office.
00:03A fine but chilly weekend lies ahead.
00:06There are signs of warmer weather as we go into next week.
00:09Here's the bigger picture for Friday.
00:11The UK between two low pressure systems
00:14and sitting well and truly in the cold air.
00:16This little area of low pressure has
00:18some warm air mixed in with it.
00:20And it was named Storm Diego by
00:22the French Weather Service because it is
00:23bringing France some very gusty winds,
00:25some wet and in places,
00:27wintry weather as well.
00:29That is scooting along the channel,
00:31bringing a very wet day for the Channel Isles
00:32and just bringing a little bit of patchy rain
00:35along the south coast.
00:36But it is tending to scoot away,
00:38leaving behind a few showers across Hampshire,
00:41Somerset, Devon.
00:42We could even see a hail shower here.
00:44Elsewhere, one or two showers scattered
00:46across northern England,
00:48certainly northern Scotland seeing more showers,
00:50wintry showers as well,
00:51sleet to low levels,
00:53snow on the hills,
00:54still a cold wind blowing here.
00:56But for many, it is a dry
00:58and a bright Friday cheering up
01:00across southern England,
01:01the cloud melting away slowly
01:03through the afternoon.
01:04And that could see temperatures of 12
01:05or 13 degrees Celsius.
01:07But when you add on the winds,
01:09although they're not as strong as recent
01:11days, it still does feel pretty cold
01:13for the time of year at six or seven
01:15Celsius and feeling really raw
01:17once more across the northeast where those
01:18winds remain pretty
01:20lively.
01:21Those bitter winds will continue to bring
01:23some showers across northeast Scotland
01:25during the evening and overnight.
01:26So it might just turn a little icy here.
01:28We're going to see further rain showers
01:30across the Midlands and southeast England
01:32during the evening as well.
01:33They'll keep going for a while
01:35overnight before eventually fading.
01:37And then for most, it is a dry night
01:39with clear spells.
01:40And that is going to lead to a frost
01:42certainly across northern England,
01:43northern Ireland, Scotland, temperatures
01:45in rural areas below freezing as they
01:46will be across parts of Wales.
01:48Many towns and cities just about
01:50holding up above freezing.
01:52But nevertheless, a pretty cold start
01:54to the weekend for this time in
01:56April.
01:57Some showers will keep coming into the
01:59northeast. So again, it could be icy
02:00here on Saturday morning.
02:02One or two showers just feeding in
02:04through the Irish Sea, perhaps into
02:06Liverpool Bay, North Wales at times
02:08during the day. And we'll see
02:09thickening cloud bringing a bit more
02:11in the way of showers across northern
02:12Scotland by the afternoon.
02:14Again, some snow on the hills.
02:16But for the vast majority, it's
02:18another dry, bright day on Saturday.
02:20Again, the winds are notched down, but
02:21still quite lively in the northeast.
02:23So still a cold feel here, but
02:25elsewhere, temperatures are just
02:27starting to tick up a little bit,
02:29but still below average for the time
02:31of year 9, 10, 11, 12
02:33for most places.
02:34Quite quickly on Saturday evening,
02:36those temperatures will fall away.
02:37So if you're heading out again, be
02:38prepared for it to be quite cold and
02:40still more showers across Scotland.
02:42Again, some sleet and snow mixed
02:44in with those.
02:46And again, with clear skies as we head
02:47into Sunday morning, you can expect a
02:49frosty start to the day.
02:51But again, for most places,
02:53Sunday, yes, on the chilly side, but
02:55generally dry and bright with light
02:57winds. Most places seeing some good
02:58spells of sunshine.
03:00It will cloud over later on
03:02across parts of the West, particularly
03:04parts of Northern Ireland as a weather
03:06system tries to move in.
03:07This is out in the Atlantic and it
03:09will bring a bit of a change,
03:11increasing cloud.
03:13And as we go into next week, we'll see
03:15milder air with that weather
03:17system moving in as well as a bit
03:19more in the way of cloud and shower.
03:21So it will be a bit warmer as we go
03:22through next week.
