00:00Hello again, everybody, and welcome back to the live finale of The Apprentice.
00:13It seems like a presidential debate going on here.
00:16We've checked in with a lot of people here at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center to help
00:20the Donald make up his mind.
00:21Now, before we bring out the two finalists, let's take a look at how they did.
00:26Jennifer proved to be a tough competitor in the field, even tougher in the boardroom.
00:35My name is Jen Massey.
00:36I live in San Francisco, California.
00:38I graduated in the top of my class from Princeton University, and then attended Harvard Law
00:42School.
00:43I'm now an attorney at the world's biggest law firm.
00:45May I please have your name?
00:46Jennifer Massey.
00:47What I'm interested in is hearing from you guys strengths and weaknesses.
00:48I'll be here to ebb your flow.
00:49She's analytical, and she's beautiful.
00:51She's analytical, and she's beautiful, which makes her especially dangerous.
00:58Poor Catherine, the dog's like, ah!
01:02I'm getting that freaking $10.
01:04You need me to go after her, don't I?
01:07I hope members of the team are scared of me.
01:09I'm going to be right there in your face, holding you accountable for what you did on
01:12this.
01:13You lost dismally as project manager, and you've been barely contributing.
01:16You think you're going to bring me down?
01:17I don't think so.
01:18I think Chris probably swallowed and prayed to her a hypnotic fembot spell.
01:23Maybe that's your secret, Jen.
01:24You know how to dog somebody out in a really nice way.
01:27I'm going to make her hair look the same.
01:30We're willing to do just about anything, within reason.
01:33Thank you so much.
01:34You're so sweet.
01:35What about the paint?
01:37And the paint's not going anywhere.
01:38I think Jen is more convincing.
01:40I do, too.
01:40I do, too.
01:41Who did you think did the best job?
01:43I would have to say, I think, that Jen did the best job all around.
01:46So finally, the education's paying off, maybe, Jen.
01:50I moved across the country to San Francisco
01:52into a very competitive legal market.
01:54And all you do is mock them.
01:56Even as you walk around, you feel inferior.
01:58You don't even know what a lawyer does.
02:00This is a potentially life-changing night.
02:02I'm willing to put a lot out there on the table.
02:04And I'm willing to fight for myself.
02:05And I'm planning on doing that, absolutely.
02:10And here she is, everybody, Jennifer Massey.
02:28Sit down, Jennifer, please.
02:31Well, you having fun?
02:32Having a great time.
02:34I have to tell you, Jennifer.
02:35It could've been more fun.
02:36It's a tough night.
02:37It is.
02:38You're going to have to fight for your life.
02:39I'm ready for it.
02:40You know that.
02:41I'm ready for it.
02:42OK.
02:43OK, here's Jennifer's opponent.
02:45no pushover kelly proved himself over and over again
02:48during the course of the season and here he is in action
02:56i'm kelly purdue thirty-seven and a west point graduate
02:59i serve in the army as an intelligence officer in an airborne ranger
03:02i earned graduate degrees in both law and business from ucla
03:05now i'm the president of a software development company in los angeles
03:11no listen for a second for ten minutes we're going to pound again with ideas
03:14i don't want to start talking about that just quite yet
03:17kelly kicks into g.i. joe all of a sudden when he's the leader you know
03:21you're like, i like him
03:22i think we need to stay over seventy dollars to try to maximize our revenue
03:25why not make it lower though? it's basic supply and demand
03:28mosaic wins by ten dollars and four dollars
03:32that's the difference on the one dollar on the price
03:34yes, good call baby, good call
03:36we're not focused on getting one thing done right, we have to pull an outfit together
03:40kelly seems to, again, risen for the occasion to organize
03:44don't talk to her anymore
03:45we're trying to get something done
03:46i asked a question
03:47you asked him a question, you asked him a question, you asked her a question
03:49to have information
03:51and it's not information that you need, rosh
03:53i want an exemption, i know i can lead well
03:55kelly is the leader
03:56is everybody okay?
03:57mm-hmm
03:58group hug?
03:59it's four e-v-g-e
04:01question, why can't you have a hole in the d?
04:03isn't that cool?
04:04that's cool, what is your record as project manager?
04:06three and a half years as a project manager
04:08i am doing things very well in this interview process
04:10i'm really hoping deep down that he picks me
04:14because i have worked really hard for this
04:20and here he is in person, ladies and gentlemen, kelly perdue
04:38thank you
04:44sit down, kelly
04:46sit down
04:48it's very nice that you stood up for him
04:50it's actually very nice
04:52you're actually a much nicer person than people think
04:56i'm only tough when i have to be
04:58okay, well, you can be tough right now
05:00why should i not take kelly over you?
05:04because, mr. trump, i have risen to the top of every organization of which i've been a part
05:08i'm not sure that kelly has done that
05:10i rose to the top in my class at princeton
05:12rose to the top at harvard
05:14rose to the top at my law firm
05:16and i lead in a little bit quieter of a way than kelly
05:20i don't grandstand
05:22from the very first task when i came up with the name the metamorphor for our car
05:26and was integral in creating the concept
05:28to the second task
05:30where i helped create the ice cream flavor
05:32based on my southern roots
05:34the ice cream flavor red velvet
05:36all along the way
05:38to stepping up in the qbc task
05:40and going live on air
05:42with no training
05:44to washing and grooming dogs
05:46when other people didn't want to get their hands dirty
05:48all along the way
05:50these are examples of quiet leadership
05:52or of defending a scapegoat on my team
05:54when everyone else was going after her
05:56these are the ways that i have shown subtle leadership
05:58and the ways that i have shown my strong integrity
06:00i have never once
06:02jennifer a lot of your teammates did not like you
06:04you know that
06:06you know what i was willing mr trump to take an unpopular approach
06:08if it meant defending someone who was a scapegoat
06:10if it meant standing up for my integrity
06:12i was not willing to talk behind people's backs
06:14i was not willing to backstab
06:16i was someone that wanted to go
06:18and confront someone
06:20and find out what they were saying about me
06:22or about another teammate
06:24jennifer kelly went to west point
06:26you went to princeton and harvard
06:28do you think that gives you or him
06:30the advantage
06:32both great
06:34i agree that west point is a very impressive institution
06:36however princeton and harvard are consistently
06:38rated as the two top institutions
06:40in the world
06:42and harvard law is unmatched
06:44and not only did i attend those institutions
06:46mr trump, but i went to the top
06:48i graduated magna cum laude and phi beta kappa
06:50from princeton
06:52which put me in the top 5% of the class
06:54i was also nominated, one of a handful of students
06:56nominated for the pine prize
06:58which is recognized for scholarship
07:00uh, scholarship, character
07:02as well as leadership
07:04okay, i know, i've seen all the awards and they're very impressive
07:06i was also a member of the princeton honor society
07:08i was also president of my sorority
07:10i don't know kelly, you better get going
07:12you better get going here kelly
07:14mr trump, my point is
07:16my point is
07:18you know what, i have to give him a shot
07:20i understand
07:22kelly, why should i choose you
07:24you should choose me mr trump
07:26based on my experience
07:28and consistency, let me tell you what i mean by those two things
07:30from west point
07:32trains leaders, both for the army
07:34and for the nation when they get out of the army
07:36i've taken that
07:38experience, that education into an experience
07:40as an airborne ranger
07:42and an officer
07:44at the time, now lieutenant colonel
07:46does that relate to business?
07:48we're talking business, i love the military
07:50there's nothing i respect more than the military
07:52but does that relate to business?
07:54absolutely, and one of your colleagues
07:56somebody that you have a lot of respect for
07:58ace greenberg said
08:00it's very specific, that you not only know how to follow
08:02but you know how to lead, you can take orders
08:04and give orders
08:06from an experiential standpoint, i also took my jd and my mba
08:08and i've applied those over the last 12 years
08:10to different startups
08:12in functional expertise
08:14marketing, sales, finance
08:16do you think west point is an advantage over harvard and princeton?
08:18i have great respect
08:20for the institutions that jen attended
08:22and i wouldn't say anything bad about them at all
08:24i think you should leave it that way
08:26all are great, princeton, harvard, west point
08:28absolutely, and from a consistency standpoint
08:30there's something that you
08:32basically preach and that's
08:34to be a winner you have to surround yourself with great people
08:36and you only deal with winners
08:38well, i have been a winner
08:40in this task, in this interview that you set up
08:42ten and four is my record
08:44kevin stated earlier, jen's six and eight
08:46which doesn't even get her to a 500 record
08:48jennifer, how do you explain that?
08:50you were six and eight, you have a wonderful background
08:52everything's good, but you lost a lot
08:54mr. trump, unfortunately
08:56in the early stages i was on an
08:58all-female team that unfortunately
09:00there was a lot of petty politics
09:02why, do you think you have a disadvantage being on a female team?
09:04i think there was a bit, and not because they were female
09:06i think there was a bit of a disadvantage at the beginning
09:08because the team, there was a lot of
09:10backstabbing and infighting, however
09:12i tried to emerge as someone that regardless
09:14of what was going on, i maintained my integrity
09:16but you did lose a lot
09:18our teams did lose a lot, but
09:20no project manager ever pulled me into the
09:22final boardroom, in fact, most of the project
09:24managers identified me as the strongest
09:26person in the task, as well as
09:28various executives
09:30applause
09:32and
09:34often times when a project manager, a losing project
09:36manager has every incentive to pull the
09:38weakest person on the team into the boardroom
09:40to risk, so that they themselves
09:42are not at risk
09:44she's very impressive tonight, kelly
09:46i have to be honest with you
09:48applause
09:50i'm also impressive, my life is not
09:52confined to this boardroom, i am also impressive
09:54in my real life, and again i point to my
09:56credentials, kelly, quickly
09:58my consistency, kelly
10:00things are happening here
10:02my consistency, mr trump
10:04my consistency is not just as the lead
10:06of the project manager, but as carolyn pointed out
10:08and as most of the people behind you will attest
10:10i stepped up and put my neck out
10:12every time, every single task
10:14i was
10:16applause
10:18i absolutely
10:20i absolutely
10:22respect jen, and i think she's very
10:24powerful in the boardroom, i absolutely do
10:26but i play the game differently
10:28i play the game differently
10:30you hate her and you respect her
10:32i don't hate jen
10:34it's time
10:36it's time
10:38applause
10:40applause
10:42applause
10:44this is a very
10:46very tough decision
10:48i have to be honest, jennifer
10:50harvard, princeton, top of your class
10:52you just beat our national
10:54debating champion, a guy i love
10:56andy over there, poor andy
10:58he'll never debate again
11:00after what you did to him
11:02but you know, one of the problems
11:04was that your teammates did not
11:06really like you too much
11:08and you did lose quite a bit
11:10and kelly
11:12you had a very good record
11:14i have a little bit of a question about leadership
11:16even though you went to west point
11:18i'm not so sure that you're the great leader
11:20i really am, i'm just not so sure
11:22that you're going to lead the way i want you to lead
11:24i'm not so sure
11:26that you can take that great military background
11:28and put it into business
11:30jennifer
11:32nevertheless
11:34i have to say
11:36i have to say
11:38you're fired
11:40kelly, you're hired
12:06jennifer
12:08jennifer
12:10jennifer
12:12jennifer
12:14jennifer
12:16jennifer
12:18jennifer

13:02jennifer
13:10well we're back
13:12and here's the big news so far
13:14kelly pursdue has been just named
13:16donald's new apprentice
13:18what do you think
13:20this would be really terrific
13:22maybe we could invite kelly to join us up here
13:24Why don't we take a break?
13:26Come on, guys.
13:30Thank you, sir.
13:32How do you feel?
13:34Pretty excited, sir.
13:36That's all right, you don't have to hold her chair.
13:38She's very tough.
13:40You're gonna find that out.
13:42You know what else everybody likes about the show, Donald, of course,
13:44is that theme song, absolutely perfect
13:46for The Apprentice. And the group that recorded
13:48this song has been inducted into the Rock and Roll
13:50Hall of Fame and has just come out
13:52with a new album called Imagination.
13:54And here they are, the O.J.'s, with their
13:56original hit from 1973,
13:58For the Love of Money.
14:22For the love of money
14:24People will steal from their mothers
14:26For the love of money
14:28People will rob their own brothers
14:30For the love of money
14:32People can't even walk the streets
14:34Because they'll never know
14:36In what they're gonna meet
14:38Gonna need me
14:40Don't need me
14:42Green
14:44On my desire
14:46To catch money
14:48Yeah
14:51Money, money, money, money
14:55Money, money, money, money
15:09The O.J.'s with that giant hit
15:11from 32 years ago. So, Donald, you've got
15:13a lot of projects all over the country.
15:15What have you got in mind for Kelly?
15:17Well, I'm gonna give you two choices, all right?
15:19We're going to start off with Las Vegas.
15:20I'm building a tremendous 64-story condominium tower
15:23with a good friend of mine, Phil Ruffiner,
15:25who's in the audience right now.
15:27And you're going to take a look at that right here.
15:32♪♪
15:41Soon, it will stand tall
15:43among the most luxurious buildings in Las Vegas.
15:47Early next year, I plan to start building
15:49Trump International Hotel and Tower Las Vegas
15:53on the site of the Frontier Hotel.
15:56♪♪
16:00The 64-story condominium hotel and residence
16:04will feature 1,000 hotel rooms
16:07and 50 high-end residential units,
16:10some of them up to 10,000 square feet,
16:13with all offering truly spectacular views of Las Vegas.
16:18At a cost of $500 million,
16:20it will take two years for a fleet of construction crews
16:24and design teams to complete the project.
16:26When it's finished,
16:28it will be the tallest luxury building in Las Vegas
16:31and contain 2 million square feet of high-end elegance.
16:35-♪♪
16:43That's a great project.
16:45Now, we have another project in New York, Trump Place.
16:47It's the largest job ever approved
16:49by the New York City Planning Commission,
16:51and you'll be working with me on Park Avenue
16:53and various other buildings that I'm building right now.
16:55So that'll be New York, and that's right here.
17:02When I build, I build big,
17:04and Trump Place, my $4 billion project
17:07on Manhattan's west side,
17:09is one of the largest land developments
17:11anywhere in the world.
17:14This massive project extends 13 city blocks
17:17along the Hudson River in New York.
17:20It's so large, it even has its own zip code.
17:25Construction is already underway.
17:28In fact, five buildings have been completed,
17:31and two are under construction.
17:33It'll continue through 2010.
17:36When completed, 17 new buildings will stretch
17:40across 8 million square feet of prime real estate.
17:44It'll also include a 21-acre park
17:47that's my gift to the city of New York.
17:50When finished, Trump Place will be the crown jewel
17:53of modern living and urban planning.
17:55New York City will be very, very proud.
18:03So, Kelly, those are two exciting jobs.
18:06How do you like them?
18:07Mr. Trump, they're phenomenal opportunities.
18:09Don't choose yet.
18:10We're going to throw it back to this guy.
18:12Yeah, Kelly, we're going to give you a minute
18:14to think this one over, because it's a big deal.
18:16But we're not going to be too long waiting,
18:18so when we come back, we want an answer from you, okay?
18:21Will it be New York, or will it be Las Vegas?
18:23Plus, we'll talk to our candidates
18:25about the fights, the backstabbing,
18:27and the selling through sex, Donald.
18:29And we'll talk with the colorful characters
18:31from season one, including Barbarossa.
18:34Stay tuned.
18:35Whoo!
18:36♪♪♪
18:41♪♪♪
18:46♪♪♪
18:51Okay, we're back.
18:53And we are now ready to hear Kelly's decision
18:56on which project he's going to accept.
18:58Will it be the hotel in Las Vegas
19:00or the apartment complex in New York?
19:02Kelly?
19:03Mr. Trump, as much as I love Vegas,
19:06I actually took this challenge
19:09and came to be your apprentice
19:10so that I could learn from you,
19:11and I think I can do that much better
19:13close to you here in New York.
19:14So I'll take New York.
19:16Yeah.
19:18You know what?
19:21I'm in love with your answer.
19:23I think it's terrific.
19:24And you'll work on not only the West Side,
19:26you'll work on lots of jobs in New York.
19:28So we're going to have a lot of fun.
19:30Thank you again, sir.
19:31Good.
19:33Yeah.
19:34Hey, Kelly.
19:36That project is right over here, you know,
19:38so you got to keep the traffic rolling, okay?
19:40Got it.
19:41Keep the streets open.
19:42All right, so, you know,
19:43what these guys had to go through
19:45was really tough, believe me.
19:46These kids went through a real pressure cooker,
19:48and sometimes they just boiled over.
19:50You'll see what I mean.
19:52♪♪♪
19:55Does this mean we won?
19:56Hold on, wait.
19:57Hold on, hold on.
19:58I said it like 18 times.
19:59You know what?
20:00I'm going to just check this one more time.
20:02The outlook is good.
20:04Whoo!
20:05Outlook is good.
20:06One more time.
20:07I don't know what triggered her behavior,
20:10but Stacey J, she went completely off.
20:14Excuse me.
20:15Why is no one listening over here?
20:17You guys, listen.
20:18What's up with the three of you guys, man?
20:19Because, you know, what's up?
20:21Don't worry.
20:22Elizabeth, seriously, just get your job done.
20:25You're not okay.
20:27Do you want to come do planting with me?
20:29What happened?
20:31I'm just being put in a position to fail this task, you guys.
20:36Truthfully, I think I'm going to be made
20:38to look like I'm incompetent.
20:39In my opinion, she needs to get over it.
20:41None of us have enough time to do what we want to do,
20:43but just get over it, move on.
20:45You want to be totally accountable for the win,
