00:00He's all class. He's champion, Royler.
00:02And he's walked on the outside here with a great turn of foot.
00:06Palace Pier. Palace Pier. Palace Pier. Palace Pier.
00:09Space Blues. Space Blues. Space Blues. Space Blues.
00:12He's danced every dance. He's an incredibly sound horse.
00:14After every run, he always hungs back some more.
00:16He's a true Diwali that goes out there and he gives everything.
00:19Now a segment that you're going to have some fun with.
00:29It's News You Can Use with Emma Berry, brought to you by Darley.
00:32She is our person that brings us up to speed on all things European
00:36racing and sales. And I know right now, Emma, what you're busy with,
00:40what you're studying is the Arcana August sale, which is a boutique
00:43sale with just 335 yearlings on offer.
00:47What can we expect to see from there in terms of quality and pedigree?
00:50Yeah, well, it's the first big European yearling sale and it's France's
00:54major, major sale of the year, certainly for yearlings.
00:57So it is select, as you say, but it's also, you know, a great sort of
01:02first sort of tester, if you like, for the market here.
01:05We've all been watching on and seeing how strong things have been in Saratoga.
01:09And I guess everyone in Europe is now sort of hoping that we'll follow suit.
01:13And, you know, this is a really international sale.
01:17Last year's was particularly strong.
01:19There's a really, I've been interviewing consignors all week, really,
01:22and there's a really good vibe going into this week.
01:24We start on Friday and I would imagine we will expect to see again,
01:30you know, well, Godolphin and Coolmore always play a big part on the buying bench,
01:35but we've had, you know, in the last few years, you know, major participation
01:38from Bahrain and from Japanese buyers as well.
01:41So I'm sure we're going to be seeing more of the same, you know, looking,
01:44you know, looking out for some of the best pedigrees on offer in France.
01:50Well, Emma, looking at it from this side of the pond,
01:52it seems like this particular sale is getting more
01:54and more important internationally as each year passes.
01:58And with all these big sales, Keeneland, Saratoga, this one,
02:01it seems like there's always excitement about the new stallions
02:05and their first crop yearlings.
02:08On that particular topic, what do you think the sale has to offer?
02:12Well, it's going to be very interesting, as you say.
02:13I mean, this is the first time we'll get to see any of the yearlings
02:17by the freshmen for this year.
02:20The best represented in the catalogue is St. Mark's Basilica,
02:24who was a champion two-year-old and a classic winner as well here, IC Uni.
02:30He has 12 in the sale, including several out of Group 1 winners.
02:34So I'm sure we'll be hearing his name plenty during the week.
02:37There are also a couple of Darley first-season sires represented,
02:40Space Blues, who, remember, the Breeders' Cup mile winner.
02:43He's got a handful of yearlings in the sale.
02:46And a horse who really kind of partly made his name in Deauville already
02:50is a racehorse, Pallas Pierre, a really brilliant son of Kingman,
02:54five-time Group 1 winner over a mile.
02:56He has, again, only kind of a select group in the Deauville sale.
03:02I think we'll see a lot more at Newmarket,
03:05once we get to Tattersalls for the October sale.
03:07But, yeah, we've got a decent bunch to start out with.
03:11And Pallas Pierre himself won the Jacques de Marois two years running, actually.
03:14That was last weekend in Deauville.
03:17And the sale obviously runs concurrently with really top-class racing
03:22just across the road on the racecourse.
03:24So we've got that to look forward to as well as some,
03:29hopefully, explosive action in the sales ring.
03:32Do you know of any particular horses thus far that we could zone in on?
03:36We're just watching from afar.
03:37So I like to write down horses and watch them go through the ring.
03:41Do you have any insight?
03:44Yes. Well, funnily enough, every consignor I've spoken to so far,
03:48well, at least several of them said to me, I've got a lovely Bluepoint filly.
03:51And, of course, we've been hearing quite a lot about Bluepoint.
03:53He's the sire of Rosalien, who sadly was missing from Goodwood,
03:57but is already a classic winner this year. And Big Evs, who I know you love.
03:59So Big Evs came back out and won again at Goodwood.
04:03He's going to the Nunthorpe, hopefully next week.
04:05And Bluepoint, so he's now got his, this will actually be his third crop of yearlings.
04:10And he's a sire that's really taking hold here.
04:13I wouldn't be surprised if we see, you know, some good results for him.
04:17And, of course, Dubawi, one of the kings of Europe.
04:20There's only five in the catalogue, actually.
04:23But there's full brother to Group 1 winner Ancient Wisdom,
04:27who's co-bred by LNJ Foxwoods with Monceau.
04:31I wouldn't, I think Ancient Wisdom was about two million when he sold here.
04:35And, yeah, this are the full brothers in the catalogue.
04:38And we've also got a full brother now, have I got it the right way around?
04:42Yes, a full brother to last year's top lot, which was Dubawi Philly,
04:47who was herself a half sister to two Group 1 winners, Wooded and Buccanero Fuerte.
04:52So I wouldn't be surprised if, again, her brother makes a bit of a splash.
04:57Emma, every job has its downside.
04:59What did you do to deserve to have to spend two weeks in Deauville every year?
05:03And is there going to be a little something extra in your paycheck because of this terrible assignment?
05:09Well, I'm pretty sure I can rely on Sue Finlay to take us out for some nice dinners while we're there.
05:14Yeah, it's a tough gig, you know, it's a hard beat.
05:16But we, as I say, we get to see some really good racing while we're there.
05:19The beach isn't too far away.
05:21There's a great market and Deauville is just a beautiful town.
05:24So I'll sneak out here and there and make the most of a lovely few weeks away.
05:29Very good. Emma, thanks as always for filling us in on news you can use.
05:34We'll talk to you again soon.
05:35Will do. Bye bye.
