00:00We're pleased to be joined now by Emma Berry, the TDN's European editor, and the segment
00:04where we learn what's going on overseas, and this is called News You Can Use.
00:08It's presented by Darley, and we're pleased to be joined by Emma.
00:12It's sales time.
00:13Obviously, as we're talking about this, it's the middle of the Keeneland sale.
00:16But after Keeneland is over, a lot of the attention is going to turn to the big yearling
00:20sales in Europe.
00:22We've seen such huge interest in Keeneland this year in the offspring of freshman sires.
00:27Are there any comparable young stallions in Europe that everybody's excited about?
00:32Yeah, it's certainly going to be interesting to see over the next four weeks of sales,
00:37really, from next week in Britain, Ireland and France.
00:40But the two sort of main elite sales, if you like, are feelings in Ireland first with the
00:45Goths Orby sale and then book one at Tassels October in Newmarket.
00:51So, you know, you're used to in those sales seeing the really big names coming out.
00:57There'll be plenty of Dubawis and Frankles, Siounis, all of that.
01:00But probably two of, I suppose, the sort of more interesting first season sires.
01:05We've already talked about one of them, actually, ahead of the head of the Arcana sale, and
01:09that was St Mark's Basilica.
01:10He's got even more yearlings to come now, especially in Ireland and also book one.
01:16You know, he was a terrific racehorse.
01:19He only ran four times at three.
01:20He was a group one winner at two, and then in his four starts at three, he ran in four
01:26group ones and won them all.
01:27So in three different countries, you know, he's coming in, I'm sure, with a lot of hope
01:31behind him and, you know, some really nice mares that were sent to him.
01:37He had one of his yearlings, actually, in the Goths Orby sale, had a very nice update
01:41at the weekend. His half-brother, Bruegel, won the St Ledger.
01:45So that'll be one to look out for.
01:47And then we've got Space Blues, who'll be so familiar to plenty of American listeners
01:52as well. You know, Breeders' Cup mile winner, as well as being, you know, one of the
01:57fastest sons of Dubawi here.
01:58He won the Prix de la Forêt over seven furlongs in France.
02:04I think he was the first of three consecutive Breeders' Cup mile winners for Charlie
02:07Appleby and for Dubawi as well.
02:09So his first yearlings are coming out.
02:12There are plenty of those in the Orby sale.
02:15He stands in Ireland at Kildang and Stud and yeah, I think, you know, we've already
02:20seen a couple of sons of Dubawi actually come through.
02:23Knight of Thunder is the sire of economics.
02:25He was so exciting at the weekend and the Irish champion stakes.
02:28And of course, Too Darn Hot, another young stallion.
02:31So again, there'll be plenty of hope.
02:33I'm sure that Space Blues can be one of those sons of Dubawi that comes through with
02:38some exciting young runners from next year.
02:41So, Emma, as we are, as we know all too well on this side of the pond, our turf racing
02:47is nowhere near as good as the turf racing on your side of the pond, but it's getting
02:52better. It's getting more popular with owners over here.
02:55More and more turf races are being carded over here and kind of dovetailing with that.
03:00We've seen increased American participation at Orby, at the October sales over there.
03:08Peter Brandt and some others.
03:11Can we expect to see more of the same this year with the Americans coming over there
03:14to your sales?
03:15I would certainly think so, yes.
03:16And I mean, I'd love to see in the future turf stallions being better supported by
03:21American breeders, you know, in Kentucky and elsewhere, whether that will happen ever
03:26or not, I don't know. But in the meantime, I suppose the flip side of that for Europe
03:30is that it does entice plenty of American buyers to these sales.
03:35You know, the last few years we've seen, well, Chad Brown's a regular with Mike Ryan
03:39and the Claravich Stables team, and they've really reaped the rewards of working the
03:43sales really hard here with some, and I think there's three turf classic winners that
03:48have come from book one alone in recent years, program trading and domestic spending.
03:52I think Digital Age was another, you know, we've seen Breeders' Cup winners on Pearl
03:58and Newspaper Record.
04:01So with those kind of results being a regular feature, it's absolutely easy to expect to
04:08see, you know, I think as many American buyers, if not a few more this year, coming
04:13because, you know, as you say, the turf program is expanding in America and it's certainly
04:17worth looking at that profile, of course, to have some really good prize money.
04:24Emma, are there any particular eye-catching lots that you might expect that we'll be
04:29reading about here in the States in the headlines of the European TDN?
04:33Anybody that really catches your eye at the Orby or the Tattersall's October sales?
04:39I think the one yearling that everyone will be making a beeline for when she arrives at
04:44Park Paddocks at Tattersall's will be the full sister to Alpinista, who won the ARC a
04:49couple of years ago for her breeder, Kirsten Rousing.
04:52The full sister's coming to book one and, you know, she's got to be a star attraction
05:00and, you know, it's even if she never races, which we all certainly hope she will, and
05:05that's a family that just turns out winner after winner after winner.
05:08But, you know, for pedigree alone, she's a, you know, a real, really attractive prospect.
05:13And yeah, I think she will be the one that there'll be plenty, there'll be a big crowd
05:18around her, I'm sure, once she gets there.
05:20It'll be so interesting to see.
05:22And the Orby, I'm really looking forward to seeing the full brother to Luxembourg, who
05:26is a horse that I never really think gets enough love.
05:29He's a group one winner at two, three, four and five.
05:31I don't think there are many horses you can say that about.
05:34And he's by Camelot, his full brother's featuring in the Orby.
05:37So, yeah, we'll see what he can do as well.
05:41Well, Emma, thanks for joining us and filling us in on the European sales scene.
05:45This has been News You Can Use, presented by Darling, and we'll catch up with you again
05:48soon. OK, great to see you.
05:50Thanks. Well, Emma told you a little bit earlier about Space Blues, the Darley Stallion
05:56and his yearlings will be selling now at the upcoming sales.
05:59There's a little bit more about Space Blues.
06:01He covered a book of one hundred and sixty mares back in twenty twenty two, his very
06:06first season at stud, one hundred and twenty two of which are related to or are stakes
06:13winners. Some other Space Blues facts.
06:15His first crop included the progeny from grade one winning mares ever love and
06:19Penelope, 19 from sisters to grade one winners.
06:22His second and third years at stud saw him cover more mares than in his first year.
06:27Three hundred and seventy five mares in total covered of those to sixty five are
06:33stakes winners or relatives from his second crop of foals born earlier this year at a
06:38fee of sixteen thousand euros.
06:40There are twenty three out of six performing dams and another twenty three that are
06:44siblings to black type horses.
06:47And Space Blues currently has one hundred and forty nine in full mares carrying his
06:53third crop at stud.
06:55This has been news you can use.
06:57Part two presented by Darley.
07:00He's all caused this champion on the outside here with a great turn of thought.
07:06Palace, Palace, Palace, Palace, Space Blues, Space Blues, Space Blues, Dance, every
07:13dance, the incredibly sound horse after every run, he always comes back to more.
07:16He's a true Diwali that goes out there and he gives everything.
