31 January - National weather forecast presented by Alex Deakin.
Transcript
00:00A bit of a north-south split with the weather today.
00:02Across the north, some very gusty conditions,
00:05especially in the far north of Scotland.
00:07Further south, there's plenty of fine weather
00:09to be had, albeit with quite a lot of cloud.
00:12But all the action, as I said, is further north.
00:14A lot of cloud here on the satellite image.
00:16You can make out the storm system here,
00:18because it is a storm named by the Norwegian Met Service,
00:22Storm Ingen, because it's bringing them the strongest
00:25winds.
00:25But you can see the isobars really tightly packed.
00:28It's been developing intensely, this low-pressure system.
00:32And it's bringing some very gusty conditions
00:34across northern Britain through the rest of today,
00:36as well as some wet weather.
00:37Let's deal with the winds, first of all,
00:39though the strongest gusts across northern Scotland
00:41through the afternoon.
00:42But also notice across parts of southern Scotland,
00:44northern England, and even north Wales,
00:46some lively gusts coming through.
00:48And crosswinds on roads like the A1
00:51mean some pretty difficult driving conditions
00:53for high-sided vehicles, especially.
00:56So we do have those warnings in place for those gusty winds,
00:5980, maybe even 85 miles an hour across the far north
01:02of Scotland, 50 to 60, perhaps 65 miles an hour further south.
01:05And as well as the windy weather,
01:07we'll have this band of rain sinking its way steadily
01:10southwards as well.
01:11So again, an extra hazard on the roads.
01:13Behind it, it'll turn brighter but blustery
01:16with gusty showers.
01:17And to the south, well, you'll be
01:19wondering what all the fuss is about.
01:20Yes, it turns a bit breezy.
01:21And we may see a little bit of drizzly rain
01:23over Wales and southwest England.
01:24But much of the south just dry, fairly cloudy.
01:27But we're seeing some sunny spells over parts of the east.
01:30So as I said, big contrast with the weather today.
01:33And that goes with the feel of the temperatures
01:35as well in the south, pretty mild still, 11, 12 degrees.
01:38Further north, it was milder.
01:40But as the weather front moves through, it's a cold front.
01:42So it'll actually turn colder this afternoon
01:45and feel colder still with those gusty, gusty winds.
01:48The warnings are in place until this evening.
01:50But everything does calm down a little bit
01:53through the evening.
01:53At the same time, the rain sinks its way southwards.
01:56That sort of fizzles out as it does so.
01:58But it'll bring a spell of rain across much of England
02:01and Wales through the night, clearing pretty much
02:03from the south coast by dawn.
02:04Showers will keep going in northern Scotland.
02:06It'll stay quite windy here.
02:08But as I said, those winds continuing to ease down.
02:11With the lighter winds and the clearest skies,
02:13we could just see some pockets of frost in the countryside.
02:16Most towns and cities staying a few degrees above zero.
02:19On to Thursday, and for many, actually,
02:21it's going to be a fine day.
02:22Still pretty blustery in northern Scotland.
02:24Still plenty of showers coming in here,
02:26certainly through the morning.
02:27But even here, they should tend to ease a little
02:30around the middle of the day.
02:31In many places, dry and fine.
02:33Some higher cloud around, so sunshine could be fairly hazy.
02:37But generally, a dry and a bright day
02:39until we see more rain coming into the Highlands
02:42and the Western Isles by the end of the day.
02:44And the winds will start to pick up once more here too.
02:47Temperature-wise, though, we'll be in the colder air.
02:49It's a cold front pushing south tonight.
02:51So a fresher feel tomorrow.
02:53Temperatures close to, maybe a touch below average,
02:56at 7 to 9 Celsius.
02:57And certainly, it will feel colder across the south
03:00compared to Wednesday.
03:02The rain will continue to track into the northwest of Scotland.
03:05We'll see further pulses of rain here
03:07as we head into the weekend as well.
03:08So that's an area we need to watch
03:10as the rain could start to build up.
03:11But elsewhere, just staying generally dry and cloudy.
03:15More details on the longer range outlook,
03:17you can catch our 10-day trend.
03:19That'll be available on YouTube by Wednesday afternoon.
