00:00Hello, there. Welcome to your latest weather update from the Met Office, where as we see
00:03at 2023, the weather is certainly set to remain quite unsettled across the UK. And it's all
00:09courtesy of this area of low pressure. It's not going to go very far as we move into New
00:14Year's Eve. It does eventually clear through for New Year's Day, allowing this brief ridge
00:18of high pressure to come through. But you can see the next area of low pressure just
00:22waiting there for Tuesday. Back to the here and now. We have this cold front moving across
00:27many parts of England, some heavy rain on it and also some strong and gusty winds, giving
00:31some fairly poor travelling conditions in places. The rain across Scotland just beginning
00:36to clear the mainland, but continuing right throughout the night for Orkney and Shetland.
00:42And then elsewhere, really, it's going to be a mixture of clear spells and scattered
00:45showers. In the clearest slots, it will turn fairly chilly. But I think for most places
00:50away from Scotland, we will be frost free as we start New Year's Eve. So once any early
00:56rain clears eastern England on New Year's Eve, for many parts, it's going to be a day
01:00of sunny spells and scattered showers. Showers initially focused across the west, but will
01:05become more widespread as the day goes on. Some of these could be quite heavy, even at
01:09the risk of some thunder at times. But for Shetland, that rain just continues to persist
01:14right throughout the day. A blustery day, especially across the south and the very far
01:18northeast of the UK. And with the winds coming in from the northwest, a cooler feeling day
01:23compared to Saturday, but still just reaching double figures in the south. Then into the
01:29evening as we begin to approach midnight for many parts, Northern Ireland, England and
01:33Wales, we continue to see some further showers. So certainly recommend a rain jacket if you
01:38are planning to be out around midnight. For Scotland, it should turn a little bit drier
01:43here and with some lighter winds, it will turn quite chilly too. So maybe a thicker
01:47jacket here as we approach midnight. And then for the rest of the night, very little changes
01:52really, still the risk of some further showers. Showers may well just return across parts
01:57of Scotland too as we start a New Year's Day morning. But for many, especially across the
02:02southern half of the UK, temperatures not falling much lower than around 5 to 7 degrees.
02:08So for New Year's Day, for the northern half of the UK, really it's going to be a mixture
02:11of some bright spells, but also a scattering of showers. Some of these showers could be
02:15a little bit wintry, especially across the high ground of Scotland. Across the south
02:19though, a much drier and brighter day. Good day to be out and about for a walk or two.
02:25But then down towards the very far southwest, the sunshine turning increasingly hazy as
02:29the afternoon goes on, with some rain approaching Devon and Cornwall as we approach dusk. Temperatures
02:35on New Year's Day, climbing up to about 10 to 11 degrees in the south. In the north,
02:40looking more towards 5 to 7 degrees. Well, that's all from me for now. If you want any
02:46weather updates over the New Year weekend, you can always check out our website or our
02:50app and don't forget to follow us on YouTube. But that's all for me. Take care and I'll
02:54see you again soon.
