00:00Well, unfortunately, as we go into the first full week of 2024, the weather is set to remain
00:08unsettled across many parts of the UK. Further areas of low pressure will move in from the
00:14Atlantic. There will be a slight change as we head towards the end of the week. However,
00:18high-pressure dust tried to build in from the west. Areas of low pressure begin to move
00:22into the continent and that allows us to start to import some colder air from Scandinavia,
00:27could start to see some wintry showers, especially across the northern half of the UK. Plenty
00:32of weather to get through before we get there and we'll be keeping a very close eye on things
00:35as we go through the next few days. Back to the here and now for the rest of this year,
00:39however, it's going to be a fairly blustery end to the day across many southern areas
00:44of the country. Most of us see a mixture of clear spells and scattered showers. The showers
00:49could potentially be quite heavy, especially across northwestern parts of England. So for
00:53the bells themselves, I think the best chance of staying dry will be across the central
00:57belt of Scotland, maybe down towards parts of southeastern England too. But I think if
01:03you are out and about, it's probably best to have a rain jacket handy. For the rest
01:07of the night, generally very little change. We'll continue to see further showers move
01:12in from the northwest, many of us continuing to see some clear spells in between. Clearest
01:16of the skies up towards northeastern Scotland where we will see a touch of frost. I think
01:21most towns and cities elsewhere will hang around mid-single figures.
01:26So New Year's Day itself, we will see some sunshine around across England and Wales initially,
01:30also Northern Ireland. But unfortunately for the southwest, we will see the cloud and rain
01:35begin to move in. This will spread its way northwards as we go through the course of
01:38the afternoon. So I think northeastern England, Scotland, maybe the very far north of Northern
01:43Ireland seeing the best of any sunshine during the afternoon. But still watch out for some
01:47showers here, especially across Scotland and Orkney and Shetland. Temperatures on New Year's
01:53Day ranging between 5 to 7 degrees in the north, potentially up to 11 degrees across
01:58the south.
02:00Then into New Year's Day night, the rain will continue to work its way north with some heavy
02:04outbreaks on it as it continues its progress towards Scotland. And as it bumps into the
02:08colder air across Scotland, it will turn to snow, especially across the higher ground.
02:13So for most of the UK, it's going to be a mild night. Temperatures in the south actually
02:16not falling much lower than 9 to 10 degrees in a few spots. But up across Scotland, we're
02:21still hanging on to some colder air. So here we will again see a touch of frost in places.
02:26So overall, Tuesday is going to be a fairly wet day for a lot of the UK. We've got this
02:30band of rain across Scotland, again turning to snow across the higher ground. To the south,
02:34we've got another area of rain working its way across southern areas of the country.
02:39That will be accompanied by some fairly strong winds too. In between, there will be some
02:43sunnier moments, but still watch out for a few showers. And for many, temperatures
02:48in the north around where they should be for the time of year in the south, still mild
02:52on the face of it, around 12 to 13 degrees. But factor in the wind and rain, I think it
02:56will feel a little bit colder than what these temperatures are suggesting.
03:01Well that's it from me for now. If you do want any more information about the weather
03:05where you are over the next couple of days, you can always check out our app or on our
03:08website. But from me and from the rest of the Met Office, I hope you have a happy New
03:12Year.
