17 October - National weather forecast presented by Alex Deakin.

00:00Good morning. For most, a fine day today, but don't get used to that because some very
00:05wet and windy weather is heading our way for the rest of the week. Thanks to this storm
00:10Barbette, we named it yesterday morning, it's spreading steadily northwards, bringing with
00:14it bands of heavy rain. And crucially, it's kind of slowing down as it approaches the
00:20UK. So some places will be sitting under these weather fronts for many, many hours, and that
00:25could cause some problems as the rainfall really builds up, particularly through Thursday
00:30and Friday and into the weekend. So we do have a number of Met Office warnings in place.
00:34Please do keep up to date with those through our app and through our website, constantly
00:39being looked at and monitored. Let's come back to the rest of Tuesday, however, because
00:44it's a bit of a cold start in places, a touch of frost across parts of Scotland and northern
00:49England, but some sunshine here first thing. Steadily, the cloud will continue to increase.
00:53It's already quite blustery in the southwest and the wind's really picking up over parts
00:57of north and west Wales, very gusty here for a time today. The breeze also strengthening
01:02a little on some of these North Sea coast. That'll bring a fresher feel for sure. But
01:06for many, it's a fine day, but a showery rain for Somerset, Devon, Cornwall, maybe Pembrokeshire
01:11and later on spreading into Northern Ireland. A few showers in the Northern Isles as well.
01:16But as I said, for many, it's a dry and a bright day. Temperatures a touch higher than
01:20yesterday's maybe, but still for many, a little below average. And it feels pretty
01:24fresh with that brisk wind, which is, as I say, quite gusty, particularly for west Wales
01:29and southwest England. The wind's continuing to strengthen through this evening as the
01:33rain works into Northern Ireland. Parts of north Wales seeing a little rain as well,
01:38and that will continue tonight to track into western parts of Scotland and then further
01:42pulses of rain start to arrive across the south with a brisk wind, plenty of cloud and
01:48many western areas seeing outbreaks of rain. It will be a mild night, certainly a milder
01:53night for Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland compared to the one just gone with
01:57temperatures starting in double figures in some locations. But although it's turning
02:01milder, is it also turning wetter? One area of rain working across western Scotland during
02:07Wednesday morning. And then this is really where Storm Barbette starts to take control.
02:12Heavy rain, especially later on on Wednesday, working up towards the east of Northern Ireland.
02:17There'll be some pulses of heavy rain, too, for parts of Wales and southwest England.
02:21Still at this stage tomorrow, much of eastern England, eastern Scotland, dry wind, though,
02:26continuing to strengthen off the North Sea. So again, it'll feel pretty fresh on the coast
02:31here, even though those temperatures are just gradually increasing day on day. But the wet
02:36weather, once it's in through Wednesday, is likely to last. As I say, we're particularly
02:42concerned initially about Northern Ireland through Wednesday, but then across parts of
02:45Scotland, northern and eastern England for the heavy rain. That's the greatest cause
02:50for concern. But the winds will also be strengthening, generating some large waves. Also, please
02:56do check out those weather warnings for yourself on our app and on our website. And also, please
03:01do keep up to date with the forecast. Still some uncertainty about the exact position,
03:05exactly how much rain we're going to see. So stay up to date yourself by following us
03:10on social media.
