00:00Hello, a fine Tuesday for many, but the weather is going to turn and turn quite dramatically.
00:07Storm Babette is on the way, bringing some very heavy rain and some strong winds later
00:12this week.
00:13It's this swirl of cloud just off the coast of Portugal.
00:16That's the storm system that we named on Monday morning.
00:20It's heading northwards and picking up moisture as it does.
00:23So ahead of it, these weather fronts will bring some patchy rain across parts of the
00:26West today and tonight.
00:29But for most places, actually, it's a fine day out there.
00:31Quite a lot of high cloud around, so any sunshine fairly hazy.
00:34But it's reasonably bright across northern Scotland, some sunshine here and that hazy
00:39sunshine across parts of central and eastern England.
00:41There is an increasing breeze picking up, bringing a cooler feel to some of the North
00:45Sea coast and getting very gusty to the west of the hills in Wales and southwest England.
00:50So some blustery conditions here as well as the thick cloud.
00:53But as I said, most places dry and generally a touch warmer than Monday, although it feels
00:58a little cooler as that wind starts to strengthen coming in from the east or the southeast.
01:03Now, the rain will pep up a little bit this evening over parts of Northern Ireland.
01:07So turning a little damp here, we could see a few showers then developing through the
01:11night over parts of South Wales and southwest England.
01:14But still, for many places overnight, it will be dry.
01:17There'll be more breeze and more cloud, which means it will be a much milder night, certainly
01:22across northern Britain compared to Monday nights.
01:26Many places starting in double figures.
01:28And for many still tomorrow, it'll be dry and bright for most of the day.
01:32Parts of northern England, eastern England, starting off with some sunshine, but a showery
01:35rain in western Scotland, but further south and west.
01:38We will start to see the rain pepping up, particularly across parts of Northern Ireland
01:42as we go through the day and into the evening, but also across southern England.
01:46The potential for some very wet and windy weather to swing up here, spreading into the
01:51Midlands and South Wales by the end of the day.
01:53So generating a lot of spray and surface water on the roads again.
01:58For a good part of Scotland, northern England, eastern England, it'll be dry and fine.
02:01That wind continuing to strengthen off the North Sea, though, so it'll feel pretty fresh
02:05here.
02:06But temperatures in the south actually ticking up another degree or so, 16, 17, so close
02:11to average.
02:12But obviously, it won't feel all that pleasant with the wind and the rain, which is just
02:17going to get worse as we go through Wednesday night and into Thursday.
02:21The weather front tracking its way northwards, that area of rain.
02:24This is really storm Babette, really getting to grips across the UK during Wednesday night
02:29and into Thursday.
02:30And it's these weather fronts that kind of grind to a halt that are most likely to cause
02:34the disruption, slowly spreading northwards, so into northern England and then into eastern
02:39Scotland.
02:40Look at how the ice bars pinch together as well.
02:42So the winds picking up across Scotland during Thursday, as well as that heavy and very persistent
02:49rain because the storm system continues to generate rain even into the weekend, but particularly
02:53wet across northeast Scotland.
02:55But look at this right down the eastern side, very wet on Thursday.
02:59Further pulses of rain likely to come in from the east during Friday.
03:02Number of warnings are in place.
