05th Aug - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00At the time of recording, it remains sunny across eastern parts of the UK and it'll stay
00:05fine for the first part of the afternoon. But rain is arriving from the west, followed
00:11by heavy downpours and thunderstorms later in the day. You can see the contrasting conditions
00:17across the UK from the satellite and radar earlier today. There's the low pressure driving
00:21the weather in from the west, thickening cloud out towards the west. A fairly ragged band
00:26of rain, so it's on and off rain across Wales and south-west England in particular but you
00:31can see some more coherent bands there coming into northern Ireland, western Scotland and
00:37reaching much of north-west UK by the afternoon. These areas of rain push into central southern
00:44England, the Midlands, north-west England, western Scotland a few showers ahead. But
00:49some more lively downpours following the main area of rain into Wales, south-west England
00:55and especially northern Ireland, southern parts of northern Ireland most at risk from
00:59slow moving very heavy thunderstorms later in the afternoon, thunderstorm warning in
01:05force. But at this stage, four o'clock, still some sunshine there, north-east Scotland,
01:10the far east of England and that's going to mean that it will feel pleasant enough with
01:1521 or 22 Celsius, the expected high here, maybe even 23. But further west, much cooler
01:23and fairly breezy for south-western parts. That breeze of course will help to push the
01:28showers and the rain through, although as the rain band pushes into east and north-east
01:33Scotland overnight, it becomes slow moving so there's the risk of prolonged rainfall,
01:38especially for eastern parts of the Grampians, 40-60mm risk of localised flooding. Meanwhile
01:43showers elsewhere circulating around the low, slow moving for northern Ireland, southern
01:48Scotland, northern England, breezing through quite quickly overnight for southern areas.
01:53Of course with a lot of cloud around, with the breeze, with the showers, temperatures
01:56will hold up at 15 or 16 Celsius. But there's the low, slap bang over northern Ireland as
02:01we start off Friday and the occluded front wrapped around it, causing trouble for north-east
02:06Scotland but also perhaps providing a focus for showers or longer spells of rain into
02:11parts of northern Ireland, south-west Scotland as we start off the day on Friday. So a very
02:16unsettled feel to things on Friday morning. Showers pushing through quickly across southern
02:21parts of the UK, becoming slow moving and even more intense for northern Ireland, north
02:25Wales, north Midlands, northern England, southern Scotland. Rumbles of thunder, hail a possibility
02:31but the main risk will be these very heavy downpours of rainfall in a short spell of
02:37time and where we get these bands of showers aligning, there's the risk of 60, 80, perhaps
02:44100 millimetres in places but highly variable from place to place because that is the nature
02:50with these showers. Of course, Friday could be a busy travelling day so difficult conditions
02:55on the roads, especially where we've got these downpours giving a lot of surface water and
03:01spray. Meanwhile, some sunshine away from the showers in the south. It's not all doom
03:06and gloom but the showers do push through very quickly on that breeze and it will feel
03:11cool in the breeze, 20-22 Celsius, even cooler further north but some warmth in the north-west
03:18of Scotland where we've got the wind coming in from the east. That wind will drive the
03:23rain to the far north of Scotland by the end of Friday. Further showers or longer spells
03:27of rain push into north Wales, north-west England at times by the start of the weekend
03:33and that low pressure stays with us through the weekend as well, providing a focus for
03:37further showers or even the odd thundery downpour, especially across northern parts
03:42of the country. We'll keep you updated on social media and you can follow us on these
03:46channels. Bye bye.
