23 December- National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00Hi there. A band of rain moves north-east across the country through the rest of the
00:04day, turning things milder and brighter in the south-west by the afternoon, whilst it
00:09stays grey and damp elsewhere, and hillsnow in Scotland increasingly so overnight and
00:15into the start of Christmas Eve. Cold air to the far north, but mild air has now made
00:21in roads across the bulk of the country, and those mild south-westers bring a couple of
00:25weather fronts, those merging together generally speaking, so a lot of cloud cover I think
00:31for many with outbreaks of rain, mostly light rain and drizzle in the east of England, whilst
00:36northern England, Scotland, sees the persistent rain and at times heavy rain, especially around
00:42western and central Scotland, falling as snow above, say, 500 or 600 metres of the Scottish
00:48mountains. Further south-west, Northern Ireland, Wales and the south-west of England, turning
00:53brighter and much milder than it has been during recent days, 10 to 13 Celsius with
00:59a south-westerly breeze. Remaining cold in the far north, and that cold air overnight
01:06starts to increasingly affect this weather front, so the snow level coming down, snow
01:10falling to 200 to 300 metres across Scotland and settling above 400 metres, 2 to 5 centimetres,
01:17and perhaps above 500 metres, 10 centimetres. So over the higher routes of Scotland, risk
01:21of disruption from that snow. Whilst further south, well, a lot of low cloud I think, but
01:28some clear spells allowing some fog to form, and it is mild across much of the country,
01:33temperatures staying well above freezing. Now we begin Christmas Eve with that area
01:39of rain and hill snow. It is petering out, so actually it does turn a little drier, but
01:45a lot of cloud here and remaining damp in places. It comes a bit further south, so perhaps
01:50some snow over the tops of the Pennines. Meanwhile, following that drier but generally gloomy
01:55start across England and Wales, rain pushes in from the south-west by the afternoon, reaching
02:00Northern Ireland by about 3 or 4pm. Brightening skies once again towards the south-west following
02:05that spell of heavy rain, and again it is mild in the south-west, 11, 12 Celsius, colder
02:11further north. And that theme, that north-east, south-west split continues into the Christmas
02:19weekend, with this weather front separating things across the country. And this is slowing
02:24down actually as it pushes across the country, so if we fast forward to the morning of Christmas
02:29day, you can see it is almost in the same place, it is bringing outbreaks of rain to
02:33Northern Ireland, much of southern Scotland, northern England, east Anglia, and it is cold,
02:38and so that rain, well, it is going to be snow over the tops of the Pennines, southern
02:43uplands as well. And for the north of Scotland, drier, brighter, some crisp winter sunshine
02:49here, whilst towards the south-west, milder with blustery showers pushing in by Christmas
02:55day. And in between, some strong winds, especially over the Pennines and around the Irish Sea
03:02coast. So, well, quite a lot of different weather types to contend with on Christmas
03:06day itself. Cold and bright in the far north, much more unsettled and milder towards the
03:12south-west. And, of course, we will keep you updated if you follow us on social media.
03:16Bye-bye.
