00:00I am joined by Robert Griffin, the third James White field. Yes, Nina Kimes. All right. So
00:16first play, we're going to look at second into one of the Patriots first offensive plays.
00:22What's going on everyone. Welcome back into another episode of the Patriots daily podcast
00:27here on the CLNS media network. It's my Catholic Taylor Kyle's here for our first opponent
00:32preview with key matchups ahead of week one Patriots versus Bengals. We're going to bring
00:38on a guest from every opponent here throughout the season. And so for week one, we are very,
00:43very pleased, very excited to be joined by Joe Goodberry of Bengals on the brain, great
00:49Bengals coverage out in Cincinnati, a ton of a ton of Twitter stuff, and also a YouTube
00:55channel over there. So we'll, we'll plug that later on to Joe, but first and foremost,
01:00thank you so much for joining us. We really appreciate you helping us kick off week one
01:03here. Yeah, I'm excited. Thanks for having me on guys. I mean, the first week to these
01:08two teams going at it, it's kind of fun, you know? Yeah, it's going to be great for sure.
01:12It's a, it's sort of a, a top of the NFL barrel team in the Bengals than a bottom of the barrel
01:18team with the Patriots. We're going to kind of go through an overview of each team. Of
01:22course, the Patriots, as we know, number three, overall pick new head coach, a new
01:26general manager, a de facto GM and Elliot Wolf kind of gearing things, kicking things
01:31off.
01:32And it's funny, it kind of feels like they're almost in Bengals mode from a few years ago
01:35where, you know, they drafted Joe Barrow and maybe they're, they need another season. They're
01:39looking for the next top five pick, which they obviously use on Jamar Chase, but really
01:44it feels like a, you know, a two to three year rebuild here with the Patriots and where
01:48they're at. But Joe, how do, how do you guys out in Cincy sort of see week one and I guess
01:55just an overview of where the Bengals are at heading into 2024, obviously a ton of storylines,
02:00one coming out today, obviously with Jamar Chase, but where the Bengals at right now?
02:03Yeah, I guess expectations are as high as they can be. You know, you're hoping it's
02:07the year after Brady hurt his knee, you know, and you come back and it's like, let's, you
02:11know, let's, let's roll it. Is the quarterback healthy? And if he is, you feel really good
02:14about your chances when Burrow has been healthy for, you know, in 2021 and 2022, they were
02:20knocking on the door of the Superbowl twice, you know, and you feel like you can get back
02:23there again, they've drafted well, they've added pieces in free agency. And then the
02:27only really thing hanging up there is the Jamar Chase really sitting out holding in
02:31all of summer. And it seems like we're getting close to that culmination. Maybe we've got
02:35a deal coming soon. I would have to happen here in the next, you know, two to three days
02:39as the game's about to kick off, but it does feel like we're heading to that. And if everything
02:43is right, expectations are high. You guys have been there for a long time. You know
02:48what it's like when you're kind of not the underdog anymore and your teams are ready
02:52to take shots at you. The schedule looks a little bit harder when you get there, but
02:55yeah, I think we're, we're all looking big picture here and hoping it's, we're still
02:58there in January.
02:59For sure. Jamar Chase, because he did miss so much time, obviously I was thinking it
03:05kind of reminded me of the Darrell Revis situation when he had his whole holdout in 2010. How
03:10much do you actually expect him to play week one? Is it going to be really, they have certain
03:13packages, only critical situations. What are you expecting his snap total to look like?
03:19So I suspect he's been getting the work in on the side and whether that's physically
03:22and mentally, we know that he and Burrow, you know, back to the LSU days already have
03:26that connection that should not take long. And I feel like they're getting their work
03:30in in the practice bubble when no one's around to Joe Burrow has kind of alluded to that
03:34today that don't worry, he's gotten his reps and we've taken care of him. He's been in
03:38all the meetings. He's ready to go. As soon as the word go, it happens here. And I suspect
03:43it will. And I think that because of the other weapons on the offense, they don't have to
03:48directly throw 15 targets to Jamar Chase week one, right? It doesn't have to be that, but
03:53they're saying that no, he's ready to go right now was how Joe Burrow, every time he was
03:57asked today at the presser, he was, he's ready to go. He's ready to go, ready to go today.
04:02And so, I mean, it gives you the confidence that they are.
04:06And the way you, the way you can look at that too, right. It's like you mentioned it
04:09already where they already have that report. They've played together for so long and it's
04:12also not a new offense they're inputting. So it's not like Chase really has to be there
04:16for, you know, install period one install period two. They can, you know, shuffle the
04:22depth chart around a bit while he's no holding in and still like you mentioned, getting his
04:26work in for Joe with Joe Burrow. So as long as he's in shape, which again, a superstar
04:31athlete trying to get paid that much money at this kind of you know, seven is career
04:35like he is, you're going to assume that he's taking the best care of his body imaginable.
04:39So I'm with you. I think once that, once his name is signed on a dotted line, I don't even
04:45really see that being much of a snap count restriction on Sunday. He's out there, he's
04:48ready to go. They know where to put him in and the rest of the guys know where to fall
04:51in line.
04:52So obviously that's that's kind of where we're at right now. We'll see if that crosses the
04:57finish line before Sunday. But the way we're going to do these opponent key matchup previews
05:02for the game for those watching is like I said, we're going to bring in a guest from
05:06each from each opponent. And that guest who is Joe today and Taylor are each going to
05:12give their key matchups to the game. And that's sort of going to be our structure, but we're
05:16going to turn it into a conversation as well. So without further ado, Joe, key matchup number
05:21one for Patriots versus Bengals on Sunday in Cincinnati.
05:25Yeah, I'm going to go with the offense and defense line offensive line for the Bengals
05:29or I'm sorry, defensive line for the Bengals. They've lost two defensive ends in camp. First,
05:34it was cam sample, a left defensive end, very good against the run. And then the last year's
05:37first round pick Myles Murphy, he's on IR is going to miss the first four weeks. So
05:41they're a little weak at defensive end and a defensive tackle. They lost DJ reader in
05:45the offseason. They replaced him with a completely different type of player and Sheldon Rankins
05:49who's more of a pass rusher, not that nose tackle type that DJ reader is. And then when
05:54I look across the other side, I say, well, the Patriots, I'm not sure who the five starters
05:58even are right now. Like who are they going to put out there on Sunday? Maybe they're
06:01trying to, you know, keep it under wraps a little bit. But as a draft guy, I look at
06:06a lot of prospects they've drafted recently and I see a few of these guys. I'm like, okay,
06:09maybe that's the plan. Maybe they're going to get these young guys that get their feet
06:12wet. But I guess the matchup to watch and look at is who's that left tackle for the
06:17Patriots versus Trey Hendrickson.
06:19He doesn't move. He's going to be at right defensive end. He's going to rush from there.
06:23And as a strictly pass rusher, I think he's a top five to eight pass rusher, not great
06:27against the run. So maybe that's his weakness, but do they have someone to block him? And
06:31what does the offensive line look like for you guys? Yeah, well, this is one of mine
06:35as well. So I feel like we're going to have a lot of overlap, but that's because I think
06:38the key matchups really are pretty loud. So what it's been in practice is that left tackle.
06:43It's been old friend shook. So Cora Ford, who I know you're very familiar with, but
06:48he's never really gone up against Trey Hendrickson because he was a right tackle for the Steelers.
06:52He was really towards most of the late part of the summer for the Patriots. Then Darian
06:56Lowe, who was the left tackle for them, was actually having a pretty solid summer for
07:00someone who's really been a career backup, ended up having an abdominal injury that's
07:04held him out the last couple of weeks. So choose his foot to the left side. Then it
07:08left guard. It has been city. So he ended up suffering an ankle injury against the commanders.
07:13So now there, it looks like it actually might be a combination of Nick Leverett, the former
07:18Tampa Bay Buccaneer, and then Michael Jordan, another former Vangel guy you're very familiar
07:23with. Those two guys have been repping on the left side next to Chuco Cora force. So
07:27I think Michael Jordan's probably going to get elevated and obviously week one, you typically
07:31with some offensive lines that aren't really set, see some level of rotation. Then center,
07:35obviously David Andrews, right guard. We've got Leighton Robinson, a rookie. He has had
07:40a very good summer, but also when it comes to handling power at times, because he's a
07:45really high cut guy, he has been put on skates that led, I don't know if you saw the big
07:49hit on Jacoby Berset in the commander's game. That was cause Robinson got pushed into city.
07:54So blew up the entire place. So as much as I like him, I'm going to be very curious how
07:59he handles BJ Hill and especially Sheldon Rankin to the Patriots. Actually, apparently
08:05we're interested in free agency and he's gangbusters, man. Like as a pass rusher, he's a scary dude.
08:10He's big, he's explosive. He moves really well. Then it writes half you got Mike and
08:14when who I kind of liked that matchup against Sam Hubbard and I'm with you when it comes
08:17to the run game, I feel like the Patriots can dominate. Even, you know, we've been listening
08:22to Scott Peters as he's coaching up the offensive line. We can't say what he's been saying.
08:26It's very obvious. He's super familiar with the Bengals. He knows how they want to handle
08:30all these run schemes. So I think technically these guys are going to know what to do, but
08:34with two with a backup at left guard and then a rookie at right guard, I'm not as comfortable
08:39as I really want to be with the interior. Really the only matchup I'm comfortable with
08:44is Mike and when you and Sam Hubbard, but they're going to have to give a choose some
08:48help. Obviously the scheme, like, you know, the Browns, they like to do as much as they
08:52can to take some pressure off their quarterbacks and offensive lines. So now that you do know
08:56what that lineup is looking like, I'm curious how you feel both as pass rushing unit and
09:01as a run defense unit, because the run defense is the one place I feel like the Patriots
09:04could potentially dominate with like David Andrews, Layton Robinson and Mike and when
09:08you, yeah, we say the Bengals as a, probably an average pass rush unit as a whole, but
09:13a Trey Hendrickson, that's a very good player. So, you know, when they rotate to these other
09:17guys, that was when the issues could come around and for the Bengals without having
09:21Miles Murphy out there, they're turning to Joseph Osai, who's going into his fourth year.
09:26He's flashed for years, but he's never been able to put it together. He's probably going
09:29to rotate in with Sam Hubbard at the left end spot and be the other pass rusher opposite
09:33of Trey Hendrickson, a still advantage, Michael, and when you there, I think it's that defensive
09:37tackle and you're talking about the run game for the Patriots, the Bengals are probably
09:41going to be a poor run defense team losing DJ reader and not really replacing him with
09:48a veteran at that spot. They spent two draft picks, Chris Jenkins, Michigan round two,
09:52and then McKinley Jackson in the third round. McKinley Jackson's also on IR. So it'll be
09:57Chris Jenkins. And then third round pick from three years ago, Zach Carter from Florida,
10:02not a really good run defender. Honestly, not really good at anything. He is the type
10:05of guy who can't take on double teams at all. Chris Jenkins is not a big dude either when
10:09they rotate these guys in, it's going to be interesting to see if they can hold up
10:13and keep the linebackers clean at all. If I was a Patriot side, I would definitely be
10:16saying we're running it. We're running up right up the middle and we're going to aim
10:19our run towards Hendrickson if we can on that side, despite having the advantage on the
10:23right side. So I'm with you. I think the Bengals need to stop this run, stop the play action
10:27so they can get into true pass rush situations and unleash Hendrickson.
10:33And that actually just what last thing we can kind of put a bow on this, but I was watching
10:36the Browns when they played the Bengals in the opener last season. It seemed like most
10:40of their successful runs were either towards the left or cutting back to the left. There
10:44were a couple like pin pull runs they had towards Sam Hubbard that worked as well. But
10:48I'm with you, Trey Henderson for as great as he is as a pass rusher, it did seem like
10:52he and the guys that they were kind of rotating at that spot where people did Alex Van Pelt
10:56and Scott Peters were targeting in the ground game. So that'll be really interesting to
10:59see.
11:00I mean, Gerard Mayo and Alex Van Pelt both are on record saying that this is going to
11:04be a run first offense. And so yes, those, those tackles, both left and right side are
11:09going to struggle. You have a matchup there. Like you mentioned, Taylor with on when you
11:14on Hubbard that, you know, you feel pretty good about, but that's still is to Colby's
11:17front side. You have Hendrickson on the backside with left tackle being such a question mark.
11:22So obviously one to watch there, but again, they're going to try and run the football
11:26with Ramond Ray Stevenson, Antonio Gibson, and the rest of that bunch.
11:29All right. So that's key, a key matchup. Number one for Joe on the Bengal side, Taylor, what
11:33is your key matchup? Number one on the Patriots side.
11:36All right. So mine, I'm actually going to go with the Patriots corners versus the Bengals
11:41wide receivers. And we already talked about Jamar chase. If he ends up playing, there's
11:46so many different ways the Patriots could handle this matchup because even Christian
11:50Gonzalez said two headed monster of T Higgins of Jamar chase. They're not the only guys
11:55in this Bengals receiver core, obviously that you have to think about, but they are very
11:59clearly the ones who are going to be highlighted in the game plan.
12:02So I'm trying to figure out, do you put Christian Gonzalez on the boundary? That was what they
12:06did in the opener against the Eagles and other team with dynamic duo wide receiver. Basically
12:10we're like, Hey, if it's AJ Brown, Devante Smith, we don't care. Just make sure he doesn't
12:14get behind you tackle, do all that stuff. Or do they go back to the really old school
12:18Patriots game plans where they say, you know what, we're going to put Gonzalez on T Higgins,
12:23have him one-on-one and then Jamar chase, you're getting Marco Wilson, John Jones, whoever.
12:27And then we're probably going to shade someone that way. And especially cause I actually
12:31am curious what your take is on this. Cause I read that Jamar has been playing more in
12:35the slot last season. I'm not sure how much that's going to happen this year, but even
12:38there, I was asking God. So like, do you like to shadow or stick to the boundary? He didn't
12:43bite on it. He wouldn't tell me anything, but even there, it's like, all right, if you're
12:46worried about where chase is going to be, do you just say Gonzo? Like he's been even
12:50following popping at the slot at times this summer, do they say, that's your guy? This
12:54is why you are premier corner go up against Jamar chase.
12:56It's going to be a battle, but we trust you more than anybody else. So I think that's
13:00going to be fascinating. We saw in 2022, Joe burrow was just eating those undersized
13:05corners alive. Marcus Jones T Higgins was just difficult to watch. They did a good job
13:10to stop the bleeding. You know, it was a four point game only gave up three plays. I think
13:14it was a 20 yards or more. So the game plan worked to a degree, but you still don't really
13:19love those matchups with the smaller guys. So I'm thinking maybe Alex Sauston and Marco
13:23Wilson mix in with John Jones, with Marcus Jones, it's going to be fascinating because
13:27there's a ton of options. Maybe they switch it up, but at the very least, we're going
13:31to get a good battle between Christian Gonzalez and whoever he's lining up against.
13:34Yeah. And the Bengals are going to throw the ball last two years, Joe burrows on pace to
13:38lead the league in attempts and drop back. So I, you know, this is a team that's going
13:41to drop back 40 plus times, no matter what the situation is. And you're, you bring up
13:46that last time they played and that was a windy, cold, kind of a nasty, sunny, but nasty
13:51day to throw the ball. And they didn't care. They threw it, they threw it all down the
13:55field. And, uh, I, I expect it again. And that you, it's funny. You bring up the slot
13:59because that is a big thing for the Bengals. It's a big storyline, but it's also, you're
14:04right. Jamar Chase's slot participation has gone up all three years. He's been in the
14:08league. And I was thinking, all right, you let Tyler Boyd walk. I wouldn't be surprised
14:11if Jamar Chase is in the slot much more. You look at the number one receivers around the
14:15league and their slot slot participation is nearing in the 50% range.
14:19If you want to, in fantasy terms, a wide receiver, one, a top 12 production type season. And
14:24last year was about a quarter of a snaps. So I would expect at least that from the old
14:29offense, but new offense here, a little bit with a new coordinator, quarterbacks, coach
14:33being promoted to offensive coordinator, and he hasn't been able to participate really.
14:37I mean, you can be in meetings, you can do all that, but there's a, there's a little
14:40nuance to the slot. That's a little different than the outside. If you're going to do it
14:42at a 50% clip. So that's something I can't wait to see. Does it, is it a slow progress
14:47through the season where we see more of Jamar Chase? And that's how we see Jermaine Burton,
14:50the third round pick out Alabama filling in on the outside. But to me, I think if I
14:55was the Patriots and it sounded like today, they're like, we're preparing for chase to
14:59be out there. And why wouldn't you write? Why wouldn't he be on the field? Even if he
15:01doesn't get a contract done, but I would do that. I would double chase and I would try
15:06and say, all right, our best corner. And I was a big Gonzalez fan when he was coming
15:09out too.
15:10So I was interested in to see what you were going to say. This is also one of my top matchups.
15:14Is he going to shadow, right? And if not one-on-one with T Higgins would be a blast to watch that
15:19would be some good film to watch. Can the Bengals though, well, one of these third receivers
15:24step up for them right now. It's Andre Yosivash second round, second year player, sixth round
15:29out of Princeton, smart dude, but six, four runs a four, three. He writes, that's weird
15:34to find out that he can play the slot. He did it this summer for the first time.
15:38And they're like, Whoa, that's our slot guy. We will see though. I'm expecting a heavy
15:41rotation between he, whether it's rotating Jermaine Burton in, if he's active Trenton
15:47Irwin, who seems to make plays whenever he's out there. I think he scored against you guys
15:50last time. And then Charlie Jones out of Purdue was last year's fifth round pick. So like,
15:57or fourth round pick, they've used him as a speed slot type option. A lot of jet motion,
16:02giving them the ball in the backfield screens and then speed slot type down the field.
16:06Can you split those safeties? So he'll get mixed in as well. That's, they have a rotation
16:11for wide receiver three, even though Yosivash is going to lead that. I'm excited to see
16:14what that looks like completely. We've speculated on our side, the whole off season of who that
16:20guy's going to be and what the rotation is going to be. But I think there's a chance
16:23for, Hey, if they're going to double chase, if you're going to put your best corner and
16:26let's say the Patriots are winning those matchups just based on, you know, talent and numbers,
16:31can that number three guy win his job?
16:34So no, no, that's my fault, Taylor. I just quickly on the wide receiver three competition
16:40out there. It's easy that we're talking about because it feels like a healthy dose of, you
16:45know, all, all two, all three guys rotating Jermaine Burton and et cetera. But if chase
16:50can't go and then Higgins turns into, or doesn't go rather Higgins go turns into that, you
16:55know, go to de facto wide receiver one in the offense, the, you know, the main target,
17:00do those guys have what it takes to be wide receiver two in this offense and take a majority
17:04of the reps instead of just being those rotational rotational pieces when you go into an 11 personnel
17:09versus 12, et cetera.
17:11We have the same questions. And, uh, D when Jamar is miss games, he's averaging over a
17:15hundred yards a game. So like he has always stepped up into that and done his thing. Uh,
17:20but at the same time, if you have good corners and you guys got a first rounder over there,
17:24right. That's going into year two, we should be entering prime time with him. Uh, and if
17:28you want to give safety help, cause there's no other options out there. Yeah. I wonder
17:31the same thing. Are those guys good enough? Can they win one on one matchups consistently?
17:35Are they aren't up in their development to win consistently? We don't have those answers.
17:40And then you start to look up, okay, maybe it's Mike Seki working the slot and moving
17:44around a little bit and being a chess piece. Is he the guy that is that the type of game
17:48where he gets eight plus targets to see if he can do something you guys are familiar
17:51with him. He's a limited player, but still at the same time, can create some matchups,
17:55uh, you know, in a, in a role that I think fits better when you have chase and Higgins
17:59on the outside doing, doing their work. Uh, but yeah, I have the same questions you do.
18:04That was a great question. And mine was, uh, you mentioned the OC change, Dan pitcher,
18:08you know, was a guy that Patriots are interested in, but of course he stays local, made all
18:12the sense in the world. What are the biggest changes you've seen in the offense since he's
18:15taken over? It looks like we're going to see more play action, more under center. And I
18:19don't know that that's him. They also brought in Justin Riscotti, who was an offensive line
18:24and pass game coordinator with the Vikings, uh, you know, in their play action, heavy
18:28wide zone scheme, uh, they bring them over. He's a pass game coordinator now. And you're
18:32seeing that influence of the play action, marrying the pass blocking with what the
18:37quarterback is doing. He's a unique coach for that. Uh, but I think with pitcher, the
18:42most interesting thing is more screens. So more of a rotation at that third wide receiver
18:47spot, more of a rotation at tight end, more of a committee approach at running back. That
18:52probably is the biggest thing why they traded away Joe Mixon. I don't, I don't think they
18:56want the bell cow guy anymore. I think they want to go with chase Brown and Zach Moss
19:01and have guys that are interchangeable that can make guys miss and get a little bit after,
19:06uh, contact. And if you get it to chase Brown on a screen, that guy can rip one off. I think
19:12that is the biggest thing is we're going to see a heavy mixture at running back.
19:16So funny. We always say like, Oh, you never find these six plus receivers run four threes.
19:20And apparently the bangle is just to have guys to spare. That's so of course that's
19:23all I got. That's all I love it. All right. Well, we're going to, uh, we're going to continue
19:28on with our matchups in just a second, but first a quick word from our friends over

19:44And unlike other apps, it's just you against the numbers right now on prize. If you go
19:49check it out, you can get Caleb Williams as a square, uh, with just one passing yard that
19:54will get you one automatic win. I hopefully don't think that Caleb Williams is going
19:58to pull like an Aaron Rogers last year and not get one passing yard in that first game.
20:02So that should be a free square for you. Also checking out the Patriots right now, Patriots
20:07versus Bengals T Higgins, more or less number on what on receiving yards, only 57 and a
20:12half guys.
20:13I don't think that's terrible considering Jamar chase might not play. And even if he
20:16does, uh, he can still go for some. And then you go over set, you can get at a more or
20:21less value of two Oh three, uh, and a half. So, uh, definitely some interesting plays
20:26there, put them all together and you can win, uh, up to a hundred times your money

20:54C L N S. All right. Uh, we talked about two matchups so far. I think both of you guys
20:58had both of those on your plate. So I believe we may have one, if not two more. Uh, but
21:03Joe, what do you got for us for yet? Another key matchup here in Patriots for things.
21:07Yeah. So another big conversation in Cincinnati, this off season was what are the bangles going
21:12to do at corner? Who's going to win this job? Dax Hill, uh, first round pick a few years
21:16ago as a safety did not have the year they were looking for at safety replacing Jesse
21:20Bates, but they move them to corner this year and directly let him compete with last
21:25year's second round pick DJ turnaround in Michigan. So to Michigan guys, one first rounder,
21:29one second rounder, a cornerback one is cam Taylor Britt.
21:32He's going into year three. He's been a good player playing about 65% of the snaps over
21:36the course of the season. He's done with injuries the last two years, but when he's been out
21:39there, he's been very, very good. And then Mike Hilton in the slot is one of the better
21:43slot guys in the last year of his deal. Uh, and it looks like they may have drafted his
21:47replacement with Josh Newton in round five has been really good in camp and answering
21:51all the questions they had about him. So the number two job was won by Dax Hill. He won
21:55that from safety first year playing corner boundary corner. And it's not that DJ Turner
22:00was bad. He was good as well. He's going to play a role. Uh, they're all going to play
22:04and it's going to be more of a rotation. And in fact, we saw a little bit over the summer
22:08on like third and long type packages where they remove Mike Hilton and bring in DJ Turner.
22:12So it ends up being cam Taylor, Britt Daxhill, DJ Turner, because I think that the speed
22:17issue and man coverage on third and long for Mike Hilton, they spent too many years getting
22:21beat by MVS and the chiefs or wherever their speed slot was. And they're like, we can't
22:25do this. We got to get more speed in that. So I I'm, you know, I want to see how that
22:30plays out. I want to see Dax Hill and what he looks like. He's got a lot of potential.
22:34We're talking about a long guy. That's a great athlete. But then I look across the field
22:38and at the Patriots and I'm thinking, man, I love the two receivers they drafted. When
22:41are they going to play? How much are they going to play? What's it look like? Who's
22:44the number one? So I have, while we have questions to be answered for the Bengals, I have so
22:48many questions for the Patriots receiver unit, not a bad way. I just want to see what it
22:52looks like.
22:53I mean, the Patriots got questions that receivers still do. So Jalen Polk does seem like he's
22:58going to, if not start going to be heavily involved. He and KJ Osborne have pretty much
23:02been the primary receivers of this offense. They kind of the X and zeros are kind of mixed
23:08match because they do use a lot of spread formations where those guys are outside on
23:11line of scrimmage anyway, but they also use a ton of three by ones. So that ISO receiver
23:15simply been Taekwon Thornton. Now we still don't really know what he is yet. He did have
23:20a solid summer, like as a route runner, he's like much improved under the new coaching
23:23staff, but on the ball, we haven't really seen him make a lot of contested catches or
23:28difficult grabs.
23:29And that's really been one of the biggest question marks for him, the consistency in
23:32pretty much every area coaching staff seems to think he's been doing a good job. So as
23:36much man coverage as I know, this Bengals team is going to play, especially when this
23:40Pat's offense goes under center. I, last time they played for set, they always went single
23:45high man and they blitz the inside linebackers, dog, whatever. So there's going to be those
23:49one-on-one match-ups. And one of my keys, if I don't have the receivers in the corners,
23:54but if I did, it would have been Taekwon Thornton has to win a couple of those match-ups and
23:58make the Bengals respect him vertically.
24:00And then another battle I'm really excited to watch is pop versus Mike Hilton. Cause
24:05as much as I like Mike Hilton, like one of the most physical Nichols in the entire game.
24:10I also think that he may not be a great matchup for pop just because the way that this guy
24:15moves, I'm telling you Javon Baker and pop had been the two receivers who looked completely
24:19different than everybody else. Like Javon, his consistency has been great, really fell
24:23off from the early part of the summer. So I wouldn't expect a ton from him unless maybe
24:27he rotates it X a little bit, but pop man, he's embarrassing anybody.
24:32And even Christian Gonzalez, there were two routes where Gonzalez followed him into the
24:35slot and got lost in coverage. It's cause he's fast. He's not a burner, but because
24:40he's quick and can catch you off guard, it's kind of one of those, or once he has a step,
24:44you're in real bad shape. So I'm hoping they can take advantage of some of those match-ups.
24:48We saw Alex Van Pelt use them in motion against the commanders for what could have been a
24:51couple of touchdowns. So I don't know who on the outside is really going to win these
24:56one-on-one match-ups. It's going to be interesting, but if the Patriots want an answer in those
25:00man coverage situations, I think it is going to be pop versus if it's Mike Hilton or whoever
25:05they have in the slot there, that's going to be interesting to see.
25:09My camera went out there almost, but so I, to follow that up, are we going to see a lot
25:15of three wide receiver sets? Is this 11 personnel for the Patriots or is it more like, let's
25:20get tight, let's run the ball down their throats and then third downs, let's spread it out.
25:24It's going to be like what you saw with that 2022 Browns game where it's, or really what
25:29they've been doing where it's all, they want to go outside zone. So they want to get you
25:33in that four down nickel front. They're going to have like Jalen Polk is going to be close
25:37to the formation sometimes just to insert another body, but it's going to be a lot of
25:41that when they want to get to their gap stuff, some of their pin pole stuff.
25:44That's when they're going to get like extra offensive linemen. They're going to get there
25:47like multiple tight end sets. Their tight end depth chart is not looking good. So I
25:51don't know if that's going to work in their favor and not necessarily. And the old line
25:54is just so shallow right now that like Michael Jordan, if he's activated, could be that eligible
25:59tight end. We're not sure yet. Uh, but yeah, I, I think that they're really going to try
26:03to just hammer outside zone, but they're going to do a little bit of everything. Like I think
26:06in the past couple of games, they've used like eight different run concepts. So it's
26:10going to be a doozy, but most of it is going to be spread, um, from 11 personnel under
26:15center trying to get going to the weak side.
26:18Because the Bengals want to be in their nickel. They want Mike Hilton out there. They feel
26:22like he's an advantage. He's a plus one against the run, you know? So I think they want that
26:26they even against the Ravens at times and Ravens are bringing in multiple tight ends,
26:30three tight end sets at times. Bengals will still go out there and they're nickel and
26:34figure it out from there. So they're a heavy rely on that nickel team. Are they just going
26:38to blitz like crazy also? Cause I was looking at the Pats game in 2022 and Mondrian couldn't
26:44get anything going. Cause you just had bodies flying in the gas. Yeah. So Lou Anna rumo
26:48will like to show you one picture and a blitz from another side or show you one picture
26:52pre-snap and switch the coverages completely. So that's his trick. That's how they got to
26:57the Superbowl that year. Teams weren't really weren't onto his game yet. And they were,
27:01he got these quarterbacks in the playoffs that really get confused. And, uh, that's
27:04his specialties to show you one thing and bring it from another.
27:07And that's what Gerard Mayo told us this morning. He said, Lou Anna rumo, you never know where
27:11the pressure's coming from. And he does such a great job disguising, like watching the
27:15preset game. They would have that like double mug zone look where you weren't sure if it
27:19was zero, if they were going to switch to some kind of split field or whatever. And
27:22then it was one of the nickels or somebody in the slot, but sometimes they'd show the
27:26one guy and then he'd bail and the other guy would come. So I can't wait to study this
27:30film, man. This is going to be, this is going to be very fun, but I'm also a little nervous.
27:34They are going to, like you said, they're going to roll, you know, different, different
27:38personnel groupings, 11, 12. They used a lot of 12, um, especially with, you know, Austin
27:43Hooper out there as well alongside Hunter Henry when they were healthy. Um, it seems
27:46like they want to do it, but again, you mentioned it to Taylor. We talked about it as sort of
27:50something that for sets going to have to do here anyway is beat the Bengals deep if he
27:54can stay protected. And so Joe, I'm just curious, one guy in that secondary sign with the Bengals
28:00this off season, Juno stone. He was a stud for Baltimore last year. I think he led the
28:04league in interceptions. It was either last year or the year before he's been great signs
28:07with Cincy. Uh, how has he looked this summer and how much, uh, how much of the Patriots
28:12to go over second, I have to worry about him, uh, in the backend.
28:15So the Bengals gave up the most explosive plays in the league last year and yards per
28:18play. All that was through the roof. Now they lost both safeties, Jesse Bates and Vaughn
28:22bell. And they said, Oh, we're going to replace them with Nick Scott who started a year and
28:26a half with the Rams and shoved Axel into the free safety role. And he just, he never
28:30played that. So it, it was a recipe. You know, the writing was on the wall. Sometimes in
28:34the summer you buy into the hype, but you're like, you know what? Those safeties, I don't
28:37know about that. Well, they ended up getting torched all year long. Uh, and I think that
28:41was like the major thing for them this off season. They're like, okay, go out and get
28:45a safety that can call it, make the adjustments that we need, have clear communication and
28:50ball skills are a plus. Well, Gino stone is that for them. And then Vaughn bell was released
28:54by the Panthers and they said, okay, we'll get you for free. Basically Panthers are paying
28:57your salary. Come on down. Let's fix the communication. Let's get you guys in the right spot. Let's
29:02do this defense the way we want to. It's hard to disguise and do all the things I talked
29:05about Lou Anna Rumo if the safeties aren't what you need them to be. So he corrected
29:10that. So yeah, if we're talking, you know, we want to lean on the run game and hit some
29:14play action passes and go over the top. I expect, you know, stone to be that free safety
29:18type. And there have been days in camp where the defense gave this offense absolutely nothing
29:24to the point where we're like, isn't this like the 31st ranked defense in the league?
29:28Maybe not. Maybe they're back to being good again. Or at least they were like 16th and
29:322021 18th and 2022 like at respectable, but not great. It wasn't until the playoffs that
29:37they've really pulled the rabbit out of the hat on these offenses. Maybe they're back
29:42at least to that mid range, which if that's good enough, if you've got an offense that's
29:46high power and puts the pressure on the opposing offense to be one dimensional and have to
29:51keep up with an offense that can put up 30 points. I think that's where they're hoping
29:54to win. This Bengals offense gets down the field, gets down there early, puts up a touchdown
30:00and then they can start disguising and unleashing whatever plan of attack they have for the
30:04Patriots.
30:06You have one more matchup or are we done here now that we hit the interior offensive line
30:09as well?
30:10Yeah, no, I have. I have actually, yeah, I have one more. I have the Patriots interior
30:15defensive line versus the Bengals interior offensive line. Joe, I actually asked you
30:19about this one last night. As much as I love me some Teddy Karras, the guards for the Bengals,
30:24if I'm a Cincy fan would worry me, especially just looking at the numbers. Like I, I don't
30:28know if there's maybe something hidden in the numbers that I'm not seeing, but like
30:32Cordell Bolson and Alex Kappa have, were two of the worst past protecting guards in
30:36the NFL last season by several metrics and the Patriots, you know, they don't have Christian
30:40bar more in this game.
30:42We don't know for how long, massive, massive loss, but Keon White has looked really good
30:47as an interior rusher. He's even admitted that's he, that's where he feels like he's
30:51the most comfortable. There were times in the preseason, I think it was the Eagles game
30:54where he was just constantly in the backfield, whether it was like splitting double teams,
30:59wasn't always finishing, but against the guy like Joe burrow, obviously it's great
31:02in the pocket, but he doesn't want guys at his feet. I feel like that's going to be big
31:05for them. Also Dietrich wise, he's going to play inside and out as well. But I think if
31:10you want to kind of rotate and get different looks in there, he was really good against
31:14all three of the interior guys for the Bengals when they played in 2022, he's like much better
31:18this year than he did last year.
31:20So hoping we get something there then behind them, honestly, it's not great in terms of
31:24like scary town. You got Daniel equality, who was solid, but he's got short arms. There's
31:29only so much he can do, but he is technique sound and pretty stout. Jeremiah farms, the
31:33guy who I do like, but we've never seen him in a major role. So I'm not really sure if
31:37he can hold up, but he has shown a lot of positive flashes, not a lot of bad, but really
31:42the main thing for me is if you can get this Bengals offense in obvious passing situations
31:47and then kick Dietrich wise or Keon White inside, I feel like they're going to have
31:50a much better chance because Joshua Uche and O'Shane Zimina is two guys who you're
31:54probably going to be relying on to get you some edge heat.
31:58They have both been limited in practice, so I don't even know how much they're going to
32:01play if they're going to be limited. So I think the key for this one is going to be
32:05making burrow uncomfortable on the inside and maybe just trying to be stout on the edge
32:09of show that he can't just roll out and extend plays.
32:11Yeah, the offensive line has been a topic since Burroughs been drafted, whether that's
32:15the Bengals being able to field a good unit at all. I mean, the guys that went to the
32:19Super Bowl in 2021, only one still in the league is Jonah Williams. Everyone else. It's
32:23yeah, they they were on their last leg in the NFL and some of them were never destined
32:27to be starters at all. The injuries happen. And then the following year, when they go
32:30to the AFC Championship game, they have three backups playing again.
32:33They just they were healthy for 15 games. And then Lyle Collins goes down in that Patriots
32:37game late in the year. And then it just cascaded and guys just started getting hurt.
32:41Alex Capa being one of them, too, and Capa dealing with a couple lower leg injuries now
32:46in his career, one with the Bucs when they went to the Super Bowl and one with the Bengals
32:50when they made the AFC Championship run in 2022. It sapped a little bit away from him.
32:56And you can see his lower body isn't as flexible. He doesn't get he doesn't play with the same
32:59leverage and explosion he had early in his career. Still, a fine guard as the same way
33:04that Ted Karras is a fine center. You know, they're either we're going to win because
33:08of their athleticism or size or strength. They don't have a dominant trait. They're
33:12going to mostly do what you need them to do.
33:14Cordovolsen, that left guard is the guy that really we've looked at as the weak link for
33:17a long time. He was a fourth round pick out of North Dakota. Right. You're not expecting
33:22this guy to come in and start right away. And he did. And he's been extremely durable.
33:26He's gotten marginally better every year, but not to the point where he's good. He'd
33:30probably be much better in a run scheme coming from a run scheme in college, like if he was
33:34with the Titans or with the Ravens, he probably would have looked better the last three years.
33:38But with the Bengals that are passing it as much as they do, it leaves him a bit exposed,
33:42especially to a quicker, more athletic pass rushers, guys that can cross his face and
33:46get him to lean a little bit, give him the overextend. They feel good about Orlando Brown
33:50at left tackle, a quality player. He's not great. He's good enough. He's what you would
33:56baseline. He's better than that, but he's not he's not a guy who's going to shut down
34:00a dominant rusher. Not that we know if the Patriots even have one right now at the edge
34:03after Matt Judon was traded away. But at right tackle, you guys know Trent Brown. He's going
34:08to start. They also drafted Amarius Mims in the first round. He earned his pack after
34:12the first preseason game. He's been practicing. I don't expect him to be active week one.
34:17You it's probably like these are two guys, Brown and Mims, that would probably play about
34:2150 percent of their team snaps over the last few years. Right. Whether that's in college
34:25or with the Patriots. And let's let's let's merge them together. It's Voltron this thing.
34:29It's a one good, massive right tackle and it might work out. Let's see.
34:32We said that so many times about the Patriots offensive line last year. Like,
34:35why can't we just combine these guys and let five good guys out there?
34:39So it doesn't work that way. Yeah. So looking at the Bengals, though, and looking at grades,
34:46if you're looking at PFF or anything like that, especially on the interior,
34:48they're not a team that was great at play action. Their pass protection got worse under play action.
34:53That's not supposed to happen. You're supposed to get more time. You're supposed to get less
34:56pressure. And they're a team that leads or near the top, usually in true pass sets, which means
35:02you are letting your offensive line get exposed. Burrow is dropping back and he is throwing that
35:06ball and scanning the field. Unlike the Texans are using a lot of misdirection, a lot of play
35:12action, a lot of under center or the Dolphins, a lot of pre-snap stuff, really hiding that
35:16offensive line, a lot of quick passes, a lot of play action again. So the Bengals expose their
35:20own line and have Burrow just chuck that thing. Again, I said, maybe we're going to see more play
35:26action. Maybe we're going to see more under center, more screens that should help slow down
35:30the pass rush a little bit. I think that's their hope. Increasing the talent, increasing the floor,
35:34but also changing their scheme a little bit to protect Burrow. Has Burrow look comfortable in
35:38that under center kind of world because he's just been in the gun his entire career? He never has.
35:43He has never looked comfortable in his rookie year. It was the truncated offseason, the COVID
35:47year, and they didn't really get to install anything in the offseason, no preseason. And
35:51then they wanted to do it. And it's like, we're like four games in. It's like, hey, he does not
35:55look comfortable. And then 2022, the year after the Super Bowl run, they they're all the run game
36:00was under center wide zone. All their passing game was shotgun. And it's like by week three,
36:04defenses are like, all right, you're in shock and you're going to throw the ball. Let's just
36:07tee off on them. They scrapped it after week four. I think that was the Jets game,
36:12scrapped it, rebuilt their offense completely from shotgun. They end up being like 92% shotgun
36:16the rest of the year. And I think that 8% was just grind the clock down to end of games type
36:20situations. And they just went straight shotgun for the last two years. And that's work.
36:24But if you're telling me you want to run more of what they did with Jake Browning,
36:28which is clearly in their playbook, Browning was successful in that type of offense where
36:32you did more misdirection. I think Burrow saw it and was like, okay, it can work. I have to trust
36:37it. I have to learn it. This has to be a thing I can do. It's the first time he's not dealing with
36:41a calf or an appendectomy or COVID or a knee, right? Cause he blew out his knee as rookie year
36:46two. He's actually had to have a chance to practice these things all off season and summer.
36:51I'm hoping for the best, but that's something I don't know. I hope so.
36:55Gerard Mayo, when he, we was talking about quarterbacks brought up Joe Burrow consistently
36:59as someone who's tough as hell, like gets hit, pops back up, you listing off those injuries.
37:04I'm like, right. That's why, because that is, that's just ridiculous that he's still
37:08slinging it and gone through all that crap in such a relatively short career.
37:13And it's not, we don't want to see it on our side.
37:17Well, he's someone to like, he's so obviously he's so good at what he does, but these,
37:21these injuries that have kind of came up with him. It's not like it's a you know,
37:25like he's an injury prone guy. Like, you know, again, appendectomy missing the entire, like most
37:29of last preseason. It's like, that's just a freak thing. Obviously a torn ACL a couple of years
37:34removed from that. Looks like he's going to be okay there. And then, you know, the wrist stuff
37:37as well. So we'll see what happens. I'm super excited to watch Joe Barrow this year, you know,
37:41patrons reporter and fan. We obviously would like to see new England win this weekend, but Joe
37:45Barrow, one of the, one of the best guys, one of the most like humble dudes out there to just watch
37:49and kind of, you know, run his game out there. So it's, it's going to be exciting. All right,

39:15sponsoring this episode. All right, let's get to our predictions. Joe, we'll start with you
39:19as the guest here. How do you see this one playing out? Predictions, some people hate them,
39:25some people like them. So if you don't want to give a score, don't feel like you have to. But
39:29final score, if you want to, how you see it playing out close to the cover the spread,
39:33however you see fit, what do you see happening on Sunday? Yeah, I don't want to be the bad guy
39:38here. So I come in peace on this. But we started this off with talking about how, talking about a
39:46team who picked top five and we don't expect the Patriots to be knocking on the door of the Super
39:50Bowl this year. And maybe it's next year, right? Maybe the next year you turn around real quick
39:53with a quarterback and we've seen it. I'm telling you, we've personally seen it. It can happen,
39:58but it doesn't mean you're good right away. And especially that rookie year where he's not even
40:03playing yet and where that's the hope. And the fun will be when that, when Drake make it out
40:07there, right? When he is eventually playing, at least in a loss, you guys will have a good time
40:11reviewing that film and seeing how he develops. I've seen lines up to 12 on this game. You know,
40:17it's moved a little bit. I, yeah, I think it was nine and a half last time I saw,
40:21but that was what the unknown of Mark chase. I wouldn't be surprised if we're getting closer
40:25to the 12 again, by the time Sunday comes around, especially if there's an extension with chase,
40:28I'm thinking like 27, 14, 27, 13. I didn't have a official one ready, but I'm thinking a two score
40:36game. And I don't want to apologize for it. Cause I think the Bengals should win like that. If
40:40they're going where we think they are, if the offense is as good as we think it is,
40:44if the defense can play as well as they did against their own offense, this, this preseason
40:48and in camp, it should be a good team. And I'm hoping to see it in week one.
40:54I'm going to pick with my heart or my, yeah, my heart instead of my brain with this one.
40:59It's the season opener, new seasons are all about hope. So you know what? I will go with the
41:04Patriots upsetting, but here's the big reason defense last year. They don't have far more,
41:10obviously, but you're hoping that Christian Gonzalez's presence, at least kind of boost
41:14them a little bit more. I also like some of the other additions they made on defense.
41:17And that was a squad that kept them in almost every single game last season,
41:21despite the quarterbacks doing their best to throw games away and just not capitalize on
41:26opportunities. I think Jacoby percent, obviously not really a full season starter type, but I do
41:32think his familiarity with the system, his intelligence, his decision-making his accuracy
41:36short to intermediate will be enough to capitalize on some of the opportunities that they'll get if
41:41they run the, if they run the ball well. And that's another big thing. If the offense can
41:45run the ball, that's when I think this becomes a close game because you control the pace of the
41:49game, Joe Burrow and the big three are cold over there, over there on the sidelines. And you're
41:54making life a little bit harder on that explosive offense. So I think the Patriots upset, but I
41:59think it's going to come down to the last possession. Defense gets the Patriots, the ball
42:02back and they say, Hey, this is a new season. How about we put a game winning drive together
42:07for the first time? And like, you know, what's it been four or five, six months or whatever.
42:11So yeah, I, I got them with the upset, but everything needs to go right for this Patriots
42:16offense. That is a lot to ask. And I'm not, I said, I'm picking with my heart and not my brain.
42:21My brain is my brain thinks that it's going to be more like what Joe's saying, but I do think
42:25there's a possibility that the defense is able to put some kind of lid on the Bengals offense
42:30and that the ground game does enough to, you know, keep the past offense on track.
42:34I will mend the fence between you two. I will call it a one score game, but the Bengals win.
42:39I'm going 2114 Bengals tend to start a little bit slow, especially the last couple of years
42:44throughout the season. Patriots. We don't know what they are yet. So there could be,
42:48they might throw a little surprise at you. You mentioned Taylor, the run game is going to be
42:52key. We talked about it as one of our key matchups. So I think it's tight. I think the
42:55Patriots can slow them down a little bit on defense, but ultimately Bengals win 2114.
43:00That's my prediction. Joe, thank you so much for joining us for our first, our inaugural
43:06three men. We've gained preview with some key matchups. We really appreciate your time
43:10before we let you go quickly. Tell our fans, tell all of Patriots nation where they can find you
43:15and where they can check out all of your awesome Bengals coverage throughout the season.
43:18Yeah. So Bengals on the brain presented by first star logistics, that's first star media page on
43:23YouTube. But if you're not interested in watching Bengal stuff, you may want to watch a film review
43:28after this week, but my Twitter account at Joe Goodberry during the off season, it's good for any
43:33football fan. I think, you know, talking draft, talking free agents, doing profiles on multiple
43:37players. That's where you'll get the value. So at Joe Goodberry on Twitter is the best spot.
43:43Thanks again for doing this. This was awesome. Me and Taylor will be back later in the week for
43:46more Patriots Bengals coverage. And we'll obviously have you covered throughout the
43:50entire weekend as well as the pads head to Cincinnati for their week one contest versus
43:54Joe Barrow and the Bengals. So make sure you rate, review and subscribe to the channel.
43:58Check out all of our written work at clnsmedia.com. And until next time, folks, take care of yourselves,
44:04take care of each other, and we'll talk to you soon. Peace out, y'all.
