00:00This is the Gregg Bedard Patriots podcast with Nick Cattles.
00:09We're live on location Nick Cattles, Gregg Bedard, Gregg Bedard Patriots
00:13podcast with Nick Cattles on a Tuesday afternoon we just watched the second
00:19padded practice with the Patriots and Gregg let's first start off with things
00:22that we haven't talked about yet of course that's Christian Barmore the
00:25blood clot situation what do you think well it's obviously a huge issue for the
00:31Patriots we know how valuable Christian Barmore is I mean they paid him and that
00:37always shows you the level of respect and what they think about the player in
00:40the future I mean the big question is when and if he can come back this year
00:44and beyond just in the past dealing with these things where there's David Andrews
00:50Antonio Garcia these things tend to take a while usually blood thinners are part
00:56of the the process to alleviate the issue right the problem is is that you
01:02can't play football when you're on blood thinners and you also need it you need
01:06to run its course so perhaps there's you know maybe maybe he's on it for like a
01:11month but then he needs another month off to make sure it's all out of his
01:14system that sort of thing but I mean look Nick it's it's huge and you combine
01:19that with I'm sure something we're also going to talk about you combine no
01:23Christian Barmore and no Matthew Judon and all of a sudden we go from a defense
01:29that we expected to carry this team Gerard Mayo said the other day this team
01:33is gonna win on defense yeah and running the ball and without basically two of
01:37their biggest difference makers maybe Christian Gonzalez would be the other
01:41one it's a huge issue for this team and so you know you just wonder how they're
01:47gonna be able to compensate I mean they don't have anybody on the roster no that
01:50is gonna come close I mean we're talking about the Daniel Equalize Jeremiah
01:55farms of the world not even close they paid the good thing for the Patriots is
02:02that they still do get a lot of pressure with their scheme and but without
02:06Christian Barmore that guy in the middle that's probably gonna draw double teams
02:10and free up other people it's gonna be tough sledding for the pass rush yeah
02:14you see across the NFL I think we all have to adjust our expectations as far
02:18as interior offensive lineman guards getting paid a lot of people looking at
02:23a winner was saying oh he's making about 20 million years that too much well Quinn
02:26minors is getting 20 million a year in Denver hunt got 19 20 million and that
02:31speaks to the importance of the interior defensive lineman nowadays and that that
02:35pass rush you look at Chris Jones in Kansas City how much of a difference
02:39maker he is of course Aaron Donald before he retired but let's look at
02:42Matthew Jude on now you mentioned it Greg we saw it play out yesterday here
02:46on the practice field everybody knows what happened by now the conversation
02:49with Mayo walks away comes back speaks with grow speaks with wolf and then
02:54walks away looked like he might have given a little bit of a parting shot as
02:58he walked off the field reportedly was not at the facility today this is a
03:02mess well there's a report out there that he
03:05wasn't even at the facility I believe Phil Perry said that he was not at the
03:08facility Wow that is yeah it's a mess it really is from the way Jude on the
03:15whole thing how this has played out whether it was you know my report and
03:19him answering it and then you know him talking to the media at a basically like
03:25thin air we didn't think he was gonna talk that day and yeah being so honest
03:29which we've talked about and it seemed like you even said well I signed the
03:33contract so I guess I got a play on it you know even though I don't want to to
03:38suddenly an open revolt during practice where you know there's a certain way of
03:43doing things like last year he was in the same situation and what did we get
03:47out of him lash it last year was I'm not talking to you snitches about my
03:52contract he went through conditioning instead of taking part in practice even
03:57with he used that as an excuse to us like oh I'm just I'm just working on my
04:02condition and making sure I need to be where I need to be by the time the
04:05season rolls around which we all knew was a bunch of BS to now this year you
04:11know he's openly talking about it for about 10 minutes in front of the media
04:14being completely honest which is fine and Mayo was fine with it to him coming
04:19out to practice sitting on a bunch of pads on a garbage can looking like he's
04:25an open revolt it's a complete 180 and yeah you know and then you get into the
04:29whole interplay between Mayo and judan and then judan comes back out and then
04:36he goes to wolf and grow during practice and he's not happy about that and Robert
04:41Kraft is in the middle of things to sell Robert Kraft out here today talking to
04:44Devon God show another guy in a contract impasse with the Patriots so look do I
04:51think this is like a big deal like in terms of do I believe like things are
04:57out of control with the Patriots no it's just that people around here aren't
05:00used to these things right I've covered different teams I've been around the
05:04NFL this kind of stuff goes on all the time as long as it gets resolved at some
05:11point whether that he gets more money he's happy here or he gets traded you
05:16know at some point that's all that really matters and so it's not a good
05:19look it's not a good look for judan it's not a good look for Mayo but I don't
05:24think it's a huge problem you know I felt this whole time that it was more
05:29likely that judan would get taken care of over gotcha but after how things
05:33played out yesterday I just felt like there was a 180 and I don't know what
05:36you do as a team this is a tough situation because you've got a first
05:39time head coach he's trying to set the standard and now do you want to set the
05:44precedent Greg of having somebody really show up the organization that's what
05:48judan did yesterday look if you have an issue I get it he's he's irritated he
05:52should be frustrated by the contract situation with what he's getting paid
05:55but you can't do what he did yesterday you cannot show up your organization in
05:59front of everybody out here in public and I just wonder if you know if you
06:03bring him back and you give him what he wants even if it's a little bit of a
06:06tick up and pay this year is that setting a precedent where now other guys
06:10see that and say oh okay now I'm gonna act like judan did and maybe I'll get my
06:16money I don't know what you want to do with that if you're Gerard Mayo and
06:19well I do think you know this is where Gerard Mayo comes into this because he's
06:25the head coach he's responsible for the way things go down yeah and thus far it
06:30looks like to me this is just my opinion that you know he was worrying so much
06:38about changing the culture after bill loosening things up letting the players
06:43express themselves that he didn't sit and think about all right well what if
06:48it goes badly what if X Y & Z happen like I understand the good that could
06:52come of this yeah but what's the bad and then also like I don't put it all on
06:56judan I think that Mayo bears responsibility in this because if he if
07:02he didn't think to set the parameters to be like look this is what we're gonna do
07:06we're gonna let you guys express yourself we're gonna give you more
07:09freedom but this is what I expect in return and if I don't get it then I'm
07:14gonna be pissed yeah and it's obvious that there weren't any boundaries put on
07:19this because I think that Matthew judan would have respected it but you know who
07:23knows maybe some people got in judan's ear and said especially with Drew
07:27Rosenhaus Devon gotcha house agent here yesterday that's usually a sign that
07:32gotcha I was gonna get taken care of that's normally how things go with
07:35Rosenhaus he comes in gets face-to-face with people they find to some resolution
07:38and then judan hears about that and he's like now I'm the last one right and
07:43and it looked different to at least to me the conversations that were happening
07:47judan it certainly seemed like there was a little bit of an irritability between
07:51the sides after practice I saw gotcha speaking with you know Rosenhaus first
07:56Rosenhaus spoke with Matt Groh was right in front of me he speaks with grow grow
08:00walks away gotcha comes up Rosenhaus and gotcha speak for about five minutes and
08:05then Mayo comes over and it's gotcha Mayo and Rosenhaus all talking and you
08:11could see you know gotcha kind of pushing Mayo playfully and they're kind
08:14of laughing with each other it at least seemed again we're going off body
08:17language which is always difficult I think we understand the judan thing now
08:21since he's not here today but you know the gotcha thing looked like Greg that
08:26it was somewhat amicable and that the two sides were getting along at least in
08:31that conversation yeah no I completely agree with your characterization of that
08:35and we'll have to see and I also think Nick this this is a little inside
08:40football but I don't think I've never I looked up judan's agent I've
08:45never heard of him yeah normally when you get that that's more like an
08:48advisor slash lawyer just to look over the well judan did say on that podcast
08:53that came out last night that he came up with a contract offer put it together
08:58and gave it to the Patriots so it sounds like judan has a heavy hand and what's
09:01going on this this is the downside of that like you can say all right I'm
09:04saving the 3% or whatnot or I've been through this and I know what's what but
09:10at the end of the day there's a reason why you you hire someone to handle your
09:14business so that you don't have to get in involved in this someone's
09:18representing your interest and you can concentrate on the field yeah let's talk
09:22quickly about your bill peppers he was out there yesterday with the training
09:26staff at the training shed way in the back looked like they were looking at a
09:30foot or an ankle a leg something lower leg injury issue goes out there takes
09:35one snap walks off the field that was it unstraps the helmet he did not practice
09:40today he was out there walking around though just kind of the overall the
09:44accumulative effect Greg with you know the judan stuff happening major player
09:48on your defense bar more happening major player on your defense and now you've
09:53got peppers come up lame pretty pretty big impact player on your defense for
09:58sure yeah hopefully it's minor you know we saw guys out there like it seemed
10:03like joshua blood so got a lot more time along with Jalen Hawkins has been
10:08out there as the free safety but there's no question that you know when you look
10:13at this team and they just gave him a contract extension jabril peppers is the
10:17heart and soul of this defense yeah and they're one of the emotional leaders and
10:21you know hopefully it's just minor and he's back the good thing is there's a
10:25long ways to go until they start games in September I will get to the
10:28quarterbacks but first here's a word from game time it's the middle of the
10:32summer it's hot but you know what summer means to me baseball I love going
10:38to the park I love supporting the old town team and when I want to go see my
10:45favorite team game time is the perfect place to go game time is an authorized
10:50ticket marketplace of Major League Baseball which makes getting tickets
10:53faster and easier prices on the game time acts actually go down the closer it
10:59gets to first pitch with killer last-minute deals all in prices views
11:04from your seats and their lowest price guarantee game time takes the guesswork
11:07out of buying baseball tickets I was just looking at the website game time
11:13co they also have the app game time I was looking big event coming up a New
11:19York team coming to Boston red hot hometown team I got to tell you they
11:26have the prices are a bit pricey for the first game of the series but guess
11:32what on game time they have these things called flash deals so an outfield
11:36grandstand ticket that normally costs 152 bucks it's 132 bucks 20 bucks off
11:42that'll get you in the park that'll get you a good view nobody in front of you
11:47no poles in front of you that's the kind of stuff you find when you go over to
11:52game time I you know what I also love about game time well there's a few
11:57things okay I love seeing the view from your seat on my phone before you buy
12:04that's a must I won't buy tickets from any place unless it has that game time
12:09has it also the all-in pricing shows your total cost up front you know you go
12:14to these other sites and you're like oh that's a good deal suddenly you get to
12:17the end and there's all these fees and taxes and other things and all of a
12:21sudden you're paying double than what you thought that does not happen at
12:25game time so make sure you get over there take the guesswork out of buying
12:30MLB tickets with game time download the game time app create an account and use
12:34code CLNS for 20 bucks off your first purchase terms apply again create an
12:39account and redeem code CLNS for 20 bucks off download game time today last
12:46minute tickets lowest price guaranteed let's get to the quarterbacks now Greg
12:52Jacoby Brissett I have not been here until yesterday he looked really good
12:57yesterday today not as good but first two days of padded practices how do you
13:01feel about Jacoby Brissett I think Jacoby's looked pretty good these last
13:05couple days I think it was you know the first four days without pads it was
13:09really sketchy for the offense as a whole I do think that yesterday he was
13:15really good today we saw they got into a little bit more situations yeah with red
13:20zone a little bit of hurry up yep Jacoby had the really nice pass on the
13:25first snap of red zone touchdown to Hunter Henry sort of the first time
13:29Hunter Henry has popped in a very long time I mean he was going against blood
13:33so just a perfect pass from Jacoby Brissett other than that it was a little
13:39dicey there there was there was another lap done by the offense that's been a
13:45theme the past couple days yeah where they broke the huddle and it looked like
13:49it looked like it was Jalen Polk was lined up in the wrong place and Jacoby
13:54Brissett got mad and looked like he was yelling in the direction of Tyler Hughes
13:58the wide receivers coach so there's some of that going on but I think Jacoby's
14:04been as advertised so far like he knows the offense he's calming you know he's
14:09pretty good under pressure he delivers the ball knows what he's doing with the
14:14ball and you know that's in stark contrast to the younger quarterbacks on
14:18this team yeah we'll get to Drake May in a second I just kind of echo what you
14:23say about Brissett much more control of what's going on out there than the other
14:27guys and then you look at Drake May and May had a rough day yesterday not much
14:33better today has not been has not been great for the rookie in the last couple
14:38of padded practices Greg yeah I this is sort of three straight down days for for
14:43Drake May today in the main team period he was one of six and had a fumbled snap
14:48with Antonio Moffey now I will point out even though this is no excuse for him
14:52even though people on Twitter love to use it as an excuse yes he is working
14:56with the backup line Moffey's a train wreck yes and he can't snap the football
15:02which seems to be important when you're a center yes he he he has been a train
15:07wreck he is every shotgun snap is an adventure everything's that so what
15:13Greg's thought about is literally every shotgun snap is at the shoestrings of
15:17Drake May he has to go down and get it or yeah it's over his head yeah and this
15:22is a byproduct of David Andrews has missed the last two practices yeah so
15:26Nick Leverett is now the starting center Antonio Moffey because Jake Andrews is
15:30on PUP is not out here it might be time for them to sign some sort of center
15:36yeah somewhere to come in because this is getting ridiculous now it's no excuse
15:41for May and I've seen out of May especially today and it really came home
15:46in that main team period where he's one of six he is now at the stage where he
15:52is thinking too much he has rookie brain lock and look I'm not overly concerned
15:59he's gonna go through this stuff where he is doesn't make a difference to me I
16:05always he was going to need to be brought along did I have the thought
16:10today that going up to number two snaps was maybe a little bit too soon for him
16:15yeah I had that thought today but I want to see how the kid rebounds and we'll
16:22see how things go yeah a couple things on May and again this is not to excuse
16:25the way he's looked because he hasn't been good and he hasn't been good the
16:28last two days for sure but I also think he's not getting much help out there the
16:32offensive line has not been very good you know Mitchell Wilcox dropped a
16:36couple of footballs for him yesterday that hit him in the hands so overall
16:40that unit has been a little bit sloppy and well behind the first string guys so
16:45I would say that and also just a reminder because I do see people jump
16:49into these grandiose conclusions about Drake May and everybody settled down
16:54everybody take a breath we all talked about this before the draft Greg talked
16:58about it I talked about it everybody and their mother talked about it heading
17:02into that draft which was May is not polished he's not a polished prospect he
17:08is going to be raw it's about potential in drafting Drake made to me was more
17:12about 25 and 26 and it was about 2024 so we have to keep that in mind it doesn't
17:18mean he's gonna be great but you know the first couple of padded practices we
17:22knew what the Patriots were getting into when they drafted him third yeah
17:25you know without question and people are overreacting to the comments I made the
17:30failure mass yesterday where I said Mac there's no question Mac Jones was way
17:34ahead of where Drake May is right now that is not breaking news we knew Mac
17:38Jones was the most pro-ready quarterback coming out of that draft he had been in
17:43pro style offenses he had been coached by Brian Dayball Steve Sarkeesian Nick
17:49Saban played with you know NFL draft picks and an NFL basically the 33rd team
17:55in the NFL yeah Alabama at the time had played a lot of football you know in
17:59high school by to this time at Alabama Drake has not played a lot of football
18:05but you know here's the thing about Drake May and where he is yes I said
18:11that about Mac Jones now a lot of people are just thinking about Mac Jones last
18:14year no no this is a much different Mac Jones that I'm talking about and that
18:18Mac Jones as a rookie was also way ahead of two guys who are going to the
18:23Hall of Fame Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers that's where Mac Jones was you
18:27just didn't know what a ceiling was we found out that was about his ceiling his
18:31rookie year and not to mention this guy was second in offensive rookie of the
18:36year balloting at the end of his rookie season and so you can't compare Drake May
18:43and Mac Jones no I'm not comparing them but what I'm just saying is Drake's
18:49starting from a much lower point and it's gonna take him time they just need
18:54to build them up the right way and you know we don't know the answer to that
18:59we're gonna have to see how this thing goes along yeah I tweeted out earlier
19:03today you can check it out at Nick C radio the Jordan love stuff from 2020
19:07and 2021 you know everybody proclaiming that love was gonna be a huge swing and
19:13a miss Dan Olofsky saying it looks like he was a terrible pick and Jordan love
19:18was very raw and didn't have a lot of football experience and we forget Drake
19:22May's story you know the COVID year messing around with his high school
19:25season he only played you know two years at North Carolina switched offensive
19:30coordinators from year one to year two so he's again he's raw and he's really
19:34young one more thing on that somebody tweeted me today a podcast that Tyreek
19:39Hill did at one point in time and there he was asked about Patrick Mahomes and
19:42he was just even Tyreek Hill said as a rookie Tyreek Hill was like this is the
19:48guy we drafted yes I thought he was trash and then he talked about all of a
19:53sudden year two how much improvement coming into year two it was like night
19:57and day like that's what they and remember Patrick Mahomes didn't play
20:01outside of one garbage start in week 17 right like the idea is to do what the
20:06Chiefs did with Patrick Mahomes and maybe Drake arrives earlier than that
20:11and plays earlier we will see but the idea is to let him develop and it's the
20:18future you're right 2025 26 and beyond just making you sure you set the right
20:23foundation for him all right some rapid-fire I'm waiting for lunch I'm
20:26starving so let's get to the offensive line looks like they're settled Greg for
20:30now looks like it's Caden Wallace left tackle city so left guard David Andrews
20:34missed the last couple days of practice but obviously when he gets back he will
20:38be at center and then you've got a whenu right guard and right tackle chooks a
20:42core for that's been there five for the last three or four practices what have
20:46you seen yeah I think it's looked pretty good I mean obviously getting David
20:50Andrews back in the middle will make everybody look a lot better I Caden
20:53Wallace has not looked like a fish out of water at left tackle he's done a good
20:57job he's done a good job in one-on-ones city so has done a really nice job yeah
21:03you know I like Nick Leverett as as a backup center and he can play all the
21:09interior positions Michael whenu has been ridiculously good he was crazy good
21:16yesterday and he he actually did have a loss today against Keon white that's his
21:20first loss in one-on-ones but he's been outstanding a core for I don't know
21:27we're gonna have yeah he's been a little bit iffy on the right side I don't know
21:33if it has to do with you know switching from left to right I would also be
21:38interested to hear the rationale between switching them your Wallace and a core
21:43for you know it could be just as simple as you know if you line up a core for on
21:47the left with city so it's a bit of a finesse left side of the line the inside
21:51is more powerful yet by swapping them you're now more balanced as an offensive
21:55line and it could be as simple as that but you know so far I think I think the
21:59returns have been promising you know I'm not gonna say they're good they're gonna
22:02be gangbusters but you know I think they've been really good they've been
22:05really good in the one-on-ones I haven't tallied up today but yesterday
22:09dominated the defensive line again without Christian Barmore or without
22:13Matthew Judon but they're off to a good Scott Peters and Robert Kugler so far
22:18off to a good start in pads yeah and the run game looks a little bit more
22:22together yep and then you know past years especially when they made that
22:26switch to Patricia back in 2022 it looks a little bit more together the run games
22:30and popping a little bit just thoughts overall defensively defensively I think
22:36you know the they've been able to scheme up a lot against the Patriots they there
