00:00All right, everyone, welcome back into another live edition of the Patriots Beat podcast
00:24here on the CLNS Media Network presented by our wonderful friends over at PrizePix and
00:29GameTime. It's Brian Heinz back as always with Alex Barth. Unfortunately, we know Taylor
00:35today. I know he was supposed to be on, but he's having some technical difficulties with
00:39his lights or whatever, so he couldn't join us today. But it's me and Barth back. Day
00:4515 of Patriots training camp. They're back to work today on a Saturday, 90 minute session,
00:52kind of lower tempo, right? No pads. Yeah, it was a lighter Saturday, 90 minute session,
00:57but not too much to talk about. There were two kind of notable things that we can get
01:03into some other notes, and the first was Drake May. We all wanted to get out there and see
01:07if he would be repping with the starters after the preseason debut. That was impressive,
01:13but I would say it was Jacoby Brissett most of the day. And then the last period, it was
01:19this kind of jog through two minute drill, even though there was three minutes on the
01:24clock because they were, you know, doing the jog through reps and. May got under center
01:28and it was David Andrews and David Andrews was snapping to him with the starting offensive
01:32line for the first time this summer, so he got some starting reps there. But again, it
01:38was in that late session jog through the offenses were split onto two fields, so the backup
01:43line was on the other field. But are you reading into that at all that maybe they're starting
01:47to set the stage here for this to really be a competition? Because again, it hasn't been
01:51a competition this summer, even though they they've kind of been saying it is a competition.
01:56Yes and no. I know I'm going to kind of be the guy that that pours smoke on the fire
02:00may be the wet blanket or smoke on everything too, because the offensive line which will
02:04get to your right. I'm going to be the wet blanket. I'm going to play Evan Lazar on this
02:07episode. So it doesn't mean nothing. Let me start off with that doesn't mean nothing,
02:14but it was one period at the very end of practice that was held at a jog through pace.
02:21The other thing, and this factors into some of the offensive line moves too. I know under
02:25bill Belichick once a year, usually in the spring, sometimes in the summer or a couple
02:31times a year, they would do a period of practice that was basically just, they would run plays
02:36and every snap they would put a backup or two on the field.
02:41And the idea was basically, Hey, just in case these guys have to play together, let's
02:46make sure they've never not been out there together before, right? Let's just get them
02:49a couple of snaps. So today kind of had the vibe of that to me now, because of the timing
02:55coming off that preseason game, when Drake may look good, is it possible? It's a little
02:59more, yes. It's definitely something to watch for tomorrow. If we see it tomorrow, it's
03:03very real. I'm still not convinced today was a sign that suddenly the tide is turning and
03:10suddenly it's going to be a lot more Drake may. Cause frankly, if we were going to see
03:14a lot more Drake, maybe we would have seen a lot more Drake may. It was one drive at
03:18the end of practice. Jacoby Brissett handled the vast majority of it. It would not surprise
03:23me if we go out there tomorrow and there's nobody like, like there's no snaps for, for
03:29Drake may with the ones, but it also, maybe this is the start of the buildup.
03:34Maybe this is the start of the built to him repping more, even if it is just one or two
03:37drives at the end of practice. What I would say on that is if he's only getting one or
03:42two drives at the end of practice, each practice between now and when practice closes next
03:46week, not enough for him to start week one. It's just not enough time. Yep. So it was,
03:53they did six periods. I was adding an up, quick six periods of 11 on 11s today and Jacoby
04:00let off all of them. And then the first five, you know, may went back in then with the backup
04:05offensive line. So, um, it still was Jacoby, but maybe this is a, like he hasn't taken
04:12a snap from David Andrews this summer and imagine he's going to start at some point.
04:16So let's start to get that, uh, that taken care of and get them familiar with each other.
04:20But also, you know, I think you said when Mac, when it was Mac first cam, you know,
04:28cam would lead off and then they would go to go to Mac, right. And still try to get
04:32cam ready, but then it would go to Mac. So maybe that's, what's going to happen here
04:35is they still, you know, Brissette leads off and then may comes into kind of cleanup duty.
04:40So maybe they're kind of set in the page, uh, for that. But I also wouldn't be surprised
04:44if it was just the late jog through period at the end of a Saturday, late Saturday practice.
04:49And then we just don't see any Drake may repping with the starters going forward tomorrow or
04:54any of these other days. So, um, it was noteworthy. It was interesting just cause again, it's
04:59the first time he's done it this summer, but, um, tough to get a clear picture on what's
05:05going on there.
05:06We'll, we'll need more evidence over these next few days of practice. So, um, but how
05:11did you think you looked? I thought he looked good. Uh, you know, again, I thought he had
05:13a good day. He wasn't fully padded, but right. I mean, it comes with that caveat, but he's,
05:18we finally got to see him throw the ball down the field a little bit, had a, had a Harris
05:22Harris, and then he hit, hit KJ Osborne on a corner, but we got to see him open up a
05:28little bit. He was throwing the ball well for what that's worth, but it's, it's not
05:33going to matter none of the, who he's repping with, how he's throwing the ball at this point
05:37in the summer.
05:38It doesn't matter if it's not in pads, but yeah, I thought it was just more of the same
05:42with their performance. And again, not padded practice, but you know, may look good. Jacoby
05:47had a few accuracy issues. And then again, we did get, get to see may kind of push it
05:52down field, the bucket throw in the bucket to Kevin Harris, tight coverage by Christian
05:56Ellis. And then the corner to Osborne would probably his two best throws in both downfield.
06:02So good to see that, but yeah, just kind of more of the same with performance wise in
06:06that quarterback room.
06:07But the big thing just going forward is what's the snaps going to look like? And is that
06:11really a sign that last period today that they're going to make an adjustment there
06:16and really make this competition? Because again, it hasn't been a competition up to
06:19this point, so we will continue to see there. But before we get to the offensive line, because
06:26that was the other big main kind of takeaway today, a very quick break. We'll hear from
06:30our friends over at price picks. Price picks is America's number one daily fantasy sports
06:35app with over 5 million active members. And it's the easiest and most exciting way to
06:39play daily fantasy sports because unlike other apps on price picks, it's just you against
06:43the numbers as you pick just more or less on two to six player stat projections and
06:48watch the winnings roll in. And price picks is the best way to win real money this football
06:52season, which players are going off, which ones aren't make your picks in less than 60
06:56seconds and turn your sports opinions in the real money all season long on price picks.
07:01And I know we're all excited to see Drake may eventually, but another rookie quarterback
07:05is going to start week one out in Chicago and one Caleb William passing yard gets you
07:10one win on price picks every week in September. That's right. Only one yard gets you an automatic
07:15win every football season or weekend in September. So that's four weeks of free W's. Don't miss
07:20this deal on price picks because it's gone when September ends. Great song. Shout out
07:25Green Day, but download price picks app today and use code CL and S for a first deposit
07:29match up to $100. That's good. See L and S on price picks for deposit match up to $100
07:36price picks. Run your game. All right. Offensive line was the other big thing that caught everyone's
07:44eye down there today. It was the same starting five. So still the daring low at left tackle
07:49a chooks core for at right tackle. And then the interior three city. So David Andrews,
07:55Michael went to, but after that it was a mess. They were rotating guys in and out. Uh, first
08:01unit, second unit, you had Mike on window kicking outside to tackle troops of core for
08:06back at left tackle at times, uh, the rookies laid in Robinson and Caden Wallace up with,
08:12you know, the, the first quote unquote unit at left guard and right tackle. So there was
08:18a lot of mixing and matching. There was a lot of rotating. Are you thinking this might
08:23be something they're experimenting with and still trying to find this best five or would
08:28you like to throw more cold water on this and just say, well, Michael, when you said
08:32after practice was we were missing a few guys, uh, Calvin Anderson and Nick's elaborate weren't
08:37out there. So we were missing a few guys. So we were just practicing, you know, backup
08:41contingency, worst possible situations and getting guys, uh, in different spots there.
08:45I think it is just because if they were actually going to try somebody else, one, you got to
08:50do it in padded practices again. And two, you, you actually would have to give one of
08:57the groups a look to evaluate whether or not it worked, right? Every two plays they were
09:03spinning them out of there. So now maybe they just wanted to get guys reps in different
09:08spots as much as possible and get them ready for this week. And maybe we get extended looks
09:12at some of those groups this week. So again, I'm not saying it's no, but this was hardly,
09:18Hey, they're changing the offensive line, guaranteed lock it in. That that's not exactly
09:23what it was. We did see some interesting groupings. We also found out after practice for Michael
09:28when he was playing at 350 pounds, which is perfectly fine. If you're a guard really tough
09:32to be a 350 pound tackle in this offense. So that kind of adds paints the picture of
09:38it a little more, even as own, when you moved out to write tackle for two or three snaps
09:41in this period. Um, I, it does sort of tell us if they, here's what I think we learned
09:48if and when they decide to change the offensive line, which maybe it is tomorrow.
09:53Maybe they were just, all right, we're going to try a different couple, a couple different
09:56groups tomorrow, but we're only doing 90 minute practice today. So we're just going to get
09:58you the rest so we can get you them. Maybe I think what we saw is what the potential
10:05changes look like. So there's, you know, still open to moving troops of core for left
10:12or right. They're so comfortable with him playing either. They're the guys they put
10:17in, right? The guys that rotated in were Kane Wallace, Clayton Robinson, the rookies and
10:23Michael Jordan, no Antonio Moffey, Nick Leverett was hurt. So you don't know how he factors
10:28in there, but they were giving these other guys chances.
10:31Uh, but no, Antonio Moffey was a recent draft pick. You know, we didn't know where he was
10:35at. No Liam Fornadel, who I know some people like, um, just, it seems like Michael Jordan
10:40and the rookies are the guys who are going to be a part of this thing if it moves around.
10:44Yep. Uh, Fornadel was like the strict backup center. Yeah. He played later, but yeah, he
10:50was, he was in that group. Um, one thing we didn't see was Caden Wallace at left tackle
10:56at all. So I wonder if they're kind of off that experiment completely, right? You mentioned
11:01those contingency plans. He, he wasn't, he was strictly at right tackle when he was out
11:05there, but yeah, I think it kind of was just contingency plans because once they got into
11:12like live 11 periods, like it was the starting five, right? Like it was very low city. So
11:17David Andrews, Michael Wenu and Chuksa core four. So I still think that's the five I would
11:21be surprised still if they change it, but maybe they are, I don't know, just kind of
11:28coming up with some backup plans, uh, just in case they do need to change that. But,
11:32um, yeah. Anything else on the offensive line there?
11:36Yeah. Yeah. To your point, it just, I think solidifies the fact that it was just that
11:41one period and when it was late, they, they were using the same group. Um, I'm not getting
11:47too excited about it. It's notable. Like you make note of it and it's okay. Is this how
11:51the change starts? I think that's a fair question, but I don't think it's, I wouldn't be surprised
11:56if we go back out tomorrow and it's very low at left and Chuksa court, right. And that's
12:00the line for all the practice. That wouldn't surprise me.
12:02Yup. Uh, so those were the big two things from practice. Again, that was a lower key
12:08session, but, um, those were the big two highlights. Uh, just some other things I had, uh, Austin
12:14Hooper went down, looked like a left leg injury of some sort. Um, well it technically didn't
12:20go down. He went to the athletic training shed and then he left early. So tight ends
12:26has been a spot. We've talked a lot about that third tight end spot. Now they're down
12:29their top two tight ends. I know the, uh, Gerard Mayo said the Hunter Henry injury isn't
12:34long term, but he's still out. And now Austin Hooper, who's been one of Jacobi presets,
12:40like favorite targets, one of his most consistent targets. Now he's out so that it was Mitchell
12:45Wilcox up. Well, Michael Petway was behind him when they kind of use those two tight
12:49end sets. So that tight end position, uh, getting a little scary right now with the
12:54depth and the talent there. I know like even on your roster projection, you were thinking
12:58of going with a veteran TBD, uh, and now they're top down their top two guys now it seems.
13:03Yeah, it's, uh, they're going to have to, it, it goes back to point. I think there's
13:08going to be somebody else added there. I think they're going to add somebody else at some
13:11point. Um, cause you still just haven't seen it from Wilcox or Petway or any of these guys
13:17that they're worth a roster spot. We've mentioned, I don't even know if we've mentioned him on
13:21the air. I've mentioned it in text Peyton Hendershot from Dallas. Okay. Who I know some
13:25Dallas people think won't make that team who knows like Pharaoh Brown was not remotely
13:30on my radar last year at this time. And he ended up being a decent player. So you really
13:35get through from our point of view. And I, I don't know if you want to talk about it,
13:39Brian, too. I know Johan Johnson, there's a report out there that he may not make the
13:42team in Washington. And some people are talking about him, just the way it works for us. You're
13:47so locked in on the team you cover that you're not necessarily looking around the rest of
13:55the league and seeing what the situations are. You kind of, it becomes a fire drill
13:59after that final preseason game. When you, when you start working on, you know, the roster
14:03projection and looking around where you want to add guys that you sort of do that research.
14:07So I can't say I'm super familiar with the tight end landscape that kind of comes in
14:11a week. Let's get through the Patriots situation first, but it's going to be something to look
14:17up. If other people want to look it up. Yeah. Zach Koontz, big fan of his a couple of years
14:21ago. Sure. Why not? Jets, right? Yeah, I think so. Although they may not want a guy with
14:28the injury history he has, because if your top two guys are banged up, you may want somebody
14:32that you're a little more sure is going to be out there. But I typed in jets instead
14:38of Zach Koontz to see if he was on the jets. Hang on. Yes, he is still on the jets. So,
14:42you know, we'll see what happens there. But I think tight end and tackler, the two spots
14:46are going to be looking externally. Yeah, I was trying to pull up the Jets depth chart.
14:52He is. Oh, they have Patriots legend Anthony Furchter. They have Patriots and Harvard legend
15:00Anthony Furchter. There you go. They have seven tight ends. So, yeah, maybe Zach Koontz,
15:05but we'll see. Someone also asked, when is roster cut down day? It's August 27th, I believe
15:11that. And then it's like the 4 p.m. deadline. So 10 days from that now. Anyone I know we
15:19just said any teams are tough to look around, but I would say in general, like the tackle.
15:25I don't know if I mentioned Darian Kennard on here, but he was a Philly guy who he played
15:33a little. He was a tackle at Kentucky, played a little guard. And when he first got to the
15:38NFL, now he's in Philly. He was he's kicked back out to right tackle. I looked at the
15:43joint practice. I heard Lane Johnson talking about him, how he was one of the most improved
15:47guys in their offensive line room, which is a talented room.
15:50So I looked him up a little bit, looked at some Eagles roster projections, and a lot
15:55of them had him on the bubble. And he played, I think, eighty three snaps. He went wire
16:00to wire in their first preseason game, only gave up one pressure. He only gave up one
16:04pressure against New England playing 50, 60 snaps. So that's a depth tackle that I
16:10found a name from. And with the joint practice, that was something Bill would always like
16:14to do. Take those guys. So the names are tough from other teams, but I would say I wouldn't
16:19be surprised if we're sitting at 51 players at a roster cut down day and add a tight end
16:24at a tackle. Look around other places to build the roster out.
16:29They're also on their third on the waiver wire, which works. It's the same as your fantasy
16:36football waiver where you put in a claim on a player. And if you have the top claim and
16:41it doesn't change. So you're locked in fantasy, right? Once you claim somebody, you go to
16:46the bottom drop. The NFL is not like that's the first two or three weeks. Brian, correct
16:52me if I'm wrong. Two or three weeks. It's based off last year's standings and it goes
16:56to the standings, you know, reverse standings like the draft order for that week. And it
17:00changes every week, but for roster cuts and for the first few weeks of the season, the
17:05Patriots are going to have third priority in the waiver while the wire they'll just
17:08be behind, uh, Caroline and Washington. So they should like last year, I think there
17:13were a couple of guys we found out they put claims in on that. They didn't get, they should
17:17get most of the guys they put claims on this year. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a
17:22few roster claims, uh, waiver claims for them. Yup. Would Dotson be wavered or would
17:28he be, is he a veteran enough where he would just, cause if he gets, if he goes to waivers
17:34that you, he would just have to get past Carolina, right? Cause Washington's in the second pot.
17:38So it's less than four crude seasons. So I think he's a waiver player, right? What draft
17:45was he? Ooh, three years ago, 22. So 23, 22, 23. Yeah. So he's a waiver player. Okay.
17:55So he would just have to get past Carolina, which Carolina needs receivers probably. So
17:59that, that might be tough, but, um, Dotson's an interesting one there. Any other someone
18:04said, sorry, just, uh, it's the first three weeks. So the Patriots will be third on the
18:09waiver wire through the first three weeks and then week four, wherever they are standings
18:16wise. Again, they use the same formula for the draft. Um, might be the top of the wave
18:19wire at the bottom of it. They probably won't be, but that'd be nice. Um, yeah, there'll
18:23be up there. Any other, just Anthony said, positions you might be looking at. I know,
18:28you know, tackle again and tight end are probably the big ones now with the injuries, but any
18:32other kind of sneaky ones, quarterback, if they want that veteran buffer quarterback,
18:37so they don't have to put Drake May in too early.
18:39If Chico Berset gets hurt and they're going to move on from Bailey's happy, they're set
18:42on moving on from Bailey's happy waiver wire, Matt Corral last year, same thing. He's back
18:48Minnesota baby. Yup. Matt Corral show. They, they got that 2022 mid round quarterback.
18:54We all thought they were going to go out and get after JJ McCarthy got hurt. Just not the
18:58one we were all thinking. Not the right one. Um, all right. A few more practice notes.
19:03Uh, and then we'll wrap up again, shorter show today for kind of a shorter, lighter
19:07practice, but, uh, one more quick word from our friends over at game time, and then we

20:39All right. Uh, just to wrap up, I know we mentioned Calvin Anderson and Nick Leverett
20:46weren't out there today. Also no, um, Oh Shane's minutes. He was kind of a new injury, had
20:54a sleeve on his left leg. So, uh, we just lost Matthew Judon and Joshua Uche wasn't
21:00out there. And now as a men, as looks maybe banged up. So the edge depth is, is taking
21:05a hit. Um, what, what do you think is going on with Uche? That one, I have no idea what's
21:11up with him. It's he's not practicing, but he's playing late into the preseason game.
21:14I have zero idea what to make of that. It's not good though. Like I, it worries me because
21:19he needs to be working with the top defense and getting used to playing with those guys
21:23because he's going to be a big part of that unit. And he's been kind of unreliable at
21:27times, like throughout his career lately, he's dealt with injuries a lot. He's been
21:31in and out. So this is, it's been kind of a weird summer for him that he was dealing
21:36with something and he was limited and now he's playing to the third quarter and now
21:39he's just not here. Uh, kind of weird, but yeah, not great that, you know, you're down
21:44really your best three edge rushers County, Matthew Jude on there, uh, with the men as
21:49an Uche not practicing today. Um, still no Marte Mapu. We haven't seen him since the
21:55first day of camp when he was limited. Um, talkie talkie still on pop born still on pop
22:01strange still on pop. We saw talkie talkie stretch for the first time today. So maybe
22:06he's getting a little closer and then Sean Wade was still limited, did get Jonathan Jones
22:11and Marcus Jones back, not fully, but seemed like they're kind of ramping, uh, ramping
22:15up, getting back into the swing of things. So that was good to see. But, um, anything
22:20stand out to you on kind of that attendance list today?
22:22I mean, just good to get the corners back. Good to get them back out there. Gerard Mayo
22:26had said he didn't, you know, they were close to being back. And those are two guys you
22:29need for week one. Um, along those lines, I thought Alex Austin, uh, and Marco Wilson
22:37got a ton of quality reps today. So kind of, it feels like that last spot, that last corner
22:43spot, I think Austin's on, I think Wilson's on obviously the two Jones's Gonzalez, that's
22:48five. It really feels like the bubble is Marcella style, Sean Wade, Isaiah Bolden, and maybe
22:55one of those guys makes it, maybe two makes it, maybe two make it.
22:59I think that's the bubble at the cornerback position right now. They're giving Wilson
23:02too many reps for him not make the team. We've talked about who he's the veteran in the room,
23:06even though he's only played like three years. I think he's on.
23:10Yep. Yeah. He he's been out there a lot. So, uh, that cornerback room, we've talked so
23:16much how competitive that is. So we'll, we'll see what happens. But, uh, the only other
23:20I know then I have is we saw more Jalen Polk today on the offense seemed like he was a
23:25little bit more involved with that top unit. So that was something we wanted to see and
23:29that was good to see. Um, but I think that's it, unless you got anything else to kind of
23:34add or throw in there or just even looking ahead till tomorrow. Uh, I'd imagine back
23:40in pads maybe after, you know, two, a day off yesterday and then a lighter day today.
23:44So maybe a fully padded practice there on Sunday, but just any last thoughts?
23:48Yeah. You guys will have to tell me tomorrow. It's going to be you and if Taylor can get
23:51his, his technology figured out, it's going to be you and Taylor. And I think Mike tomorrow,
23:54right? We'll probably be live at Gillette. I'd imagine. Oh yeah. You guys probably do
23:59it. I don't know. Well, all of it's going on vacation. I don't know if the, if Jackson
24:04will be down there and able to do that. So, so there'll be some show tomorrow with Brian
24:08and the pads daily guys. I'm on 98 five from 10 to two. So I won't be at practice, but
24:12I think what you're looking for tomorrow is how many of these, and I would assume it'll
24:17be in pads.
24:18It's been a brutal camp. I don't see any reason why that changes. And you look at the schedule
24:21down the, that down the stretch here, five practices in the next six days. I, you're
24:27looking to see if any of these, if any of these changes hold, does the offensive line
24:33continue to rotate tomorrow? The way it did today. Does Drake may get even a driver to
24:38with the stars as he did today. Today, to me, it felt like a walkthrough getting set
24:43for the weekend, which is usually what these kinds of practices are. That's not that weird,
24:47but okay. Were they really getting ready for the week or was that just filling out the
24:52practice essentially?
24:54That's what you're looking for. The one other thing I'd look for, we didn't really touch
24:58on it today. Cause there just wasn't anything about it in practice today is what's going
25:04on with the defensive line because you they've already lost bar more. They've lost Jude on.
25:11We talked about Arman Watts is maybe a guy that would step up. He looks like he's on
25:15the outside looking in Tristan Hill, Jeremiah farm seemed like they have the inside track
25:21to me that is going to be interesting to see how that, that one plays out.
25:24I'm getting, and he's not, he wasn't the same caliber of player coming in. I'm getting
25:30some, uh, Mike Pinnell vibes. No Mike Pinnell. Who's the one that just signed Mike Purcell
25:37I get it. So not him, Mike Purcell. I'm getting some Mike Pinnell vibes from Arman Watts where
25:41he signed. Everyone's like, Hey, look, they got this defensive tackle. He's a good scheme
25:45fit. And then he just didn't make the team out of camp. Meanwhile, he's still decent
25:49player. He's like still in the chiefs, but for whatever reason that summer, it didn't,
25:54I think we might be seeing some of that with Arman Watts. Yep. All right. So we'll keep it
25:58on all that tomorrow or I will, Alex won't, he won't be, I'll, I'll report back to you and
26:03everyone on that with Taylor and Mike. Someone did ask, do we have access this week? We do.
26:08We'll be at every practice just now that they're closed to the public. We can't like live tweet.
26:15We have to shoot everything out after practice. That's been a rule even under bill. So that's how
26:22life is now with no crowds there. So, and then we'll be back here to break it all down for you.
26:28Again, I'll be with Taylor and Mike at some, some point tomorrow. So make sure
