00:00I am joined by Robert Griffin III, James Whitefield, Yates Mena Kimes.
00:11All right.
00:12So first play, we're going to look at second into one of the Patriots first offensive plays.
00:19What's going on everyone?
00:20Taylor cause here for CLNS media coming at you with another episode of Pat's daily brought
00:24to you by our good friends at price picks and game time.
00:27I am joining you from a random room inside Gillette stadium.
00:31As you can tell from the lighting and maybe my not so great audio, we're just going to
00:35have to truck through this one together, but y'all you got to talk now, obviously Patriots
00:40was the Texans 41 to 21 in a game that it really felt like kind of similar to San Francisco.
00:46They might have a chance late despite an early deficit against a potential playoff team.
00:52Now this was a game where it was kind of flipped on its head from what we saw in Santa Clara,
00:58the Patriots offense could not get anything going at all.
01:00The defense kept trying to give them chances and they just couldn't capitalize this time
01:05around.
01:06The Patriots offense was not without blame at all.
01:08Obviously turn the ball over four times.
01:10Now rookie interception with Drake may obviously on the screen, that was one of the fricking
01:15craziest plays I've ever seen in my life.
01:17So we're not going to dock that one against the rookie.
01:19I don't think PFF will either in the turnover where the plays column, obviously his first
01:24interception.
01:25He liked that one back.
01:26It took him a while to really find that groove with the Mario Douglas.
01:28They finally did find it though.
01:30That was among the things that were actually positive today and Drake may honestly, he's
01:34on the ticker.
01:35So I'm just going to go in on him real quick because I want to start with some goods.
01:38We got plenty of bad to talk about.
01:40Now Drake may obviously it was a lot of the things, and this is why I kept saying we got
01:43to keep expectations measured because how to feel, and this was going to be the kind
01:48of game where even Drake may mentioned earlier this week in his first press conference told
01:52my teammates, yeah, I'm probably going to feel a little bit nervous early on.
01:56I didn't want to say it.
01:57I didn't want to jinx the kid.
01:58I had a feeling it'd be one of those, you know, Tom Brady and the Superbowl things where
02:00you just get excited because it's a big game in your career.
02:03And then, you know, you start off a little slow early on.
02:06And that's what I think Drake Mays interception was.
02:08He mentioned he was pretty amped up early on, went to the sideline, Jacoby Brissett
02:12and his teammates helped calm him down.
02:14And then it took a while really until right before halftime, you saw some of the mobility
02:18from Drake May, but the arm talent and the ability to push the ball downfield, those
02:22things that we've been waiting for.
02:24We finally got that throw to Keyshawn Booty after multiple targets that went to Mario
02:29Douglas's way.
02:30Finally, we have somebody that wants to throw it a pop in that slot.
02:34We'll get more on like the growth that they went through because obviously Drake missed
02:37him a few times.
02:38Deep ball to Keyshawn Booty.
02:40I mean, y'all round of applause for the kid.
02:44First career touchdown for him.
02:45First career touchdown for Keyshawn Booty.
02:48Great play where to Mario Douglas actually got wide open in the middle of the field.
02:51And I know me, Jackson, Ahmed, the CLNS boys, we were thinking, okay, maybe hit pop in the
02:55middle of the field, try to get into the end zone.
02:57But if you don't, you got a couple of timeouts, maybe you hit a timeout and then you get a
03:01field goal.
03:02Drake May said, nah, I'm going for the throat.
03:05That man hit Keyshawn Booty with a perfect ball.
03:07I think that's like the 50 something yards in the air, one of the longest passes for
03:12a Patriots quarterback since like last season, two seasons ago.
03:15Who knows?
03:16All I know it was a long damn time.
03:18We finally got it from the kid.
03:20And then let's talk about DeMario Douglas, because again, Drake May wasn't perfect thrown
03:24in the middle to our guy.
03:25Now he had the interception.
03:27There was a third down that he missed an opportunity.
03:29Another play where he actually hit popping through behind him, where I thought DeMario
03:32Douglas had an opportunity to take that and house it.
03:35But on DeMario Douglas's first career touchdown, we did see Drake May actually hit him in stride.
03:40We rarely actually get to see DeMario Douglas catch a ball while he's already running and
03:44show what he can do after the catch when he's not at a dead stop on a screen or something.
03:48But in this game, we finally did get to see that.
03:50I thought that was very exciting.
03:52Now, the pass protection, I will say, was spotty for most of the game.
03:56We expected that, right?
03:57We knew that there were going to be situations where Drake May had to drop back and throw
04:01from some less than ideal situations.
04:03Sometimes it worked in his favor, like that Pop Douglas touchdown.
04:06He let that ball go right before Daniel Hunter beat DeMontre Jacobs and almost got himself
04:11the sack.
04:12You also saw Drake making plays with his legs, whether it was running, extending the play
04:15and throwing to Hunter Henry, you got to see those things.
04:18So that was super encouraging, even though, of course, he had the interception, mentioned
04:23there were some plays where he probably could have run and said he threw and wasn't able
04:26to convert.
04:27The inaccuracy, those things are going to have to get tempered and calmed down.
04:32That was the book on Drake May.
04:33We wanted to see the positives, the things that we were excited for, the shots downfield,
04:37the running and all that.
04:38Even D'Amico Ryans acknowledged that was a big part of what made Drake so tough to defend.
04:43So that's definitely a positive.
04:45You know what?
04:46While I'm talking some positives, let me bring in my good buddy, my co-host, Mike Kadlec,
04:51joining me from a wedding.
04:52Bro, you better look spiffy when I put you on here because I know I look like a hot mess.
04:56Aren't you?
04:57Oh, you're looking sexy, boy.
04:58Aren't you so lucky to have a friend like me?
05:01I am, Barry.
05:02And you like that more than anything.
05:03To call in mid-wedding, mid-cocktail hour to talk about Drake May's debut.
05:08Let's go.
05:09That wasn't bad, huh, Taylor?
05:10No, that wasn't bad at all.
05:12Now, I'm just going to let you know right now, get ready.
05:14You're going to have to do some ad reads, my man.
05:16What?
05:17No, I'm just kidding.
05:18I'm just kidding.
05:19That's on me.
05:20You took it away from me in the pregame show.
05:22I saw that you were texting me this morning saying, how do I do this?
05:25How do I do that?
05:26And then you just threw it on Brian Hines' ass.
05:28Brian Hines threw it on.
05:29Oh, I'm not going to say that.
05:31Anyway, let's get your recap of the game.
05:33Obviously, start with Drake May, and then I'll let you rant as long as you want to about
05:36what happened elsewhere because it seemed like Drake was one of the few bright spots.
05:39Yeah, Drake was definitely good.
05:41I liked the fact that, I mean, obviously, they kind of, they let him throw the ball
05:44around a little bit.
05:45He threw for over 200 yards the first time a Patriots quarterback did that all season
05:49long.
05:50And the turnovers, look, I mean, that's what's going to happen, and we kind of expected stuff
05:54like that, right?
05:55I mean, he's going to go back there.
05:56He's going to sling it around.
05:57The fumble wasn't really his fault.
05:59He had a guy coming off the edge, gets beat a little bit, obviously, I mean, not great
06:03from the offensive line, but I thought May did fine.
06:05He stood in a couple first down runs.
06:08Yeah, I'm kind of, I'm reading the chat as I go.
06:11It wasn't me who got married, guys.
06:12I'm not married just yet.
06:14But I am rocking an NFL pin.
06:16Inspire change.
06:17Oh my god, holding the NFL's water.
06:20Yeah, of course.
06:21Oh yeah.
06:22But, no, May was good.
06:24Everything else not great.
06:25Defense letting up 41 points isn't going to do it.
06:27Christopher Gonzalez gets beaten in the end zone by Steph Diggs.
06:29Again, not great, but overall, I thought he had a good game.
06:32But yeah, I mean, happy with Drake May.
06:34I think that it's obviously better production on the offensive side of the ball.
06:38Absolutely, brother.
06:39So I'm going to let you get out of here.
06:40I want you to enjoy yourself because we don't have to bring you in for all the negative
06:43stuff.
06:44That's okay.
06:45But I do want to know.
06:46So Drake May obviously was awesome.
06:47What did you want to see different from defense, though, man?
06:48Because we previewed it.
06:49We talked about how a big part of this was going to be stopping the run, right?
06:52Especially with Joe Mixon healthy.
06:54We talked about keeping CJ Stroud in the pocket.
06:56They did that, the second one there, CJ Stroud really wasn't able to move around.
07:00Had some big pockets early on that he capitalized on.
07:02What about the run game?
07:03Two 50-yard runs.
07:04I don't even remember the last time that's happened for the Patriots.
07:07Yeah.
07:08I mean, look, we talked about how not having Jawan Bentley was obviously going to screw
07:12this defense up a little bit, right?
07:14And it happened.
07:15Tavai hasn't been great the last couple of weeks, but it's the only talkie-talkie comes
07:17back off PUP.
07:18And you think, all right, they're going to get a little bit more help from the linebackers,
07:23from that second level.
07:24And it just doesn't happen.
07:25Mixon runs wild.
07:26Now, granted, he comes back his first game healthy, and it looks pretty good.
07:29But yeah, you'd like to see more.
07:31I was fine with the defensive backfield.
07:33Look, I'm kind of joking about the Christian Gonzalez thing.
07:35He gets beat in the end zone by Diggs.
07:37But overall, a solid performance by him, keeping Stroud in the pocket.
07:42He's just one of the better quarterbacks in football, and that's what we hope happens to
07:46Drake May within the next couple of years.
07:48And so, fine with that.
07:49But you really would like to see this team turn it around in the run game, because that
07:53can't happen.
07:54You can't let those guys run wild like that.
07:57100%.
07:58Now, you are starting to break up, so I'm going to let you go before this gets worse.
08:02But once again, thank you for joining, buddy.
08:03Love you.
08:04Have fun.
08:05Can you have me now?
08:06What?
08:07Did we hit our prize pick?
08:08Yeah.
08:09Did we hit our prize pick, Jackson?
08:10I don't remember.
08:11We didn't.
08:12I'm going to look.
08:13How did they not hit?
08:14None of those catches were over 23 yards?
08:16Drake May's longest rush was over 11 and a half yards.
08:19That might have been the one.
08:20I think his longest was 11 yards.
08:21Yep, not good.
08:22We were close.
08:23But it's fun.
08:24They go to London to play the Jaguars next week, one and five.
08:27They're not great.
08:28That's maybe a potential win.
08:29And then they come home against the Jets.
08:30Just fired their coach.
08:31So, we'll see what happens there.
08:32But thanks for having me, Taylor.
08:33This was fun.
08:34It was fun.
08:35All right.
08:36Go have fun, buddy.
08:37Appreciate that.
08:38Have a beer for me.
08:39Later.
08:40Of course.
08:41All right, y'all.
08:42Now, let's talk about the not-so-good.
08:43So, I'm going to start this off with what I heard from Devon Doddshaw.
08:47Now, a bunch of us stood kind of late in the locker room, wanted to hear what Devon had
08:51to say.
08:52He's one of the most accountable people in that locker room, especially on a defense
08:56where they've lost so many captains.
08:57They have so many captains banged up.
08:59Devon Doddshaw has been the guy who really, in the locker room after these games, especially
09:03after these tough losses, going back to last year when I got to the beat, has always been
09:07willing to be very blunt and honest with us.
09:11Last year, you heard every single week from him and Dietrich Weiss, who is a captain,
09:15how we're a better team than this.
09:17We are a good football team.
09:18We just need to find ways to win games.
09:21A lot of that was because, obviously, the offense, week in and week out, this defense
09:24was not allowing points.
09:26One thing that I brought up to Devon, because he had a very different tone, it wasn't, this
09:31is a good team.
09:32Not that he was saying they were a bad team, but instead of kind of backing the defense
09:36and really being like, you know, we just got to figure out what to do, there was frustration
09:40instead.
09:41He's very annoyed because he feels like this defense is not playing up to their standard.
09:45Because now, this is yet another game where the Patriots allowed over 100 yards on the
09:50ground.
09:51I spoke to Jerry Montgomery on Friday.
09:53He mentioned they weren't happy with what the run defense was putting on the field,
09:56acknowledging there were different pieces in there.
09:58But Godshaw really was not happy.
10:00He said people need to take accountability in the locker room, and he doesn't think enough
10:03people are doing that.
10:05And I asked him, hey, I mean, you guys have a lot of really key players out.
10:08Christian Barmore isn't playing right now.
10:10Juwan Bentley may be done for the entire season.
10:12That's what we think it is.
10:14Jabril Peppers, obviously, has his situation.
10:16And then Matthew Judon traded away, like so many key pieces that aren't on the defense.
10:20So I wondered, how do you balance that, and how do you evaluate the team when that's the
10:25case?
10:26And what he said to me was, look, we had a lot of good players out last year.
10:29We were still a great defense.
10:31And this year, I don't think you can make the same argument.
10:33The pass defense isn't really living up to the standard that you would expect, especially
10:36the run defense isn't living up to that standard.
10:39And when you got somebody like Devon Godshaw, who consistently is the one in the middle
10:42who's holding his ground, getting off blocks and things like that, I understand it's frustrating
10:46when people around you aren't doing their jobs.
10:48Now in the long touchdowns, one of them was to, or both actually, were to Raekwon McDonald's
10:53direction.
10:54One, I know Keon Wright was at the point of attack.
10:56And there was another where I know Ja'Quaylen Roy, who actually had a good game overall.
11:00I hate that I have to bring this up, because I really thought that, especially for a young
11:03guy who's just trying to get in the mix, that Ja'Quaylen Roy really put a lot out there
11:07and had some impact plays, second week in a row, where the guy had a high effort sack.
11:12But the tackle attempt on Joe Mixon's long run, where he basically just throws his body
11:17at him, doesn't try to wrap up.
11:19And then Kyle Duggar kind of gets caught sleeping and gets run by.
11:22Another play, by the way, where Raekwon McMillan ran himself out of the fit, like Jarrod Mayo,
11:26and we'll actually get to Jarrod Mayo in just a second, and what he thought about Drake
11:30May's performance and the defense overall.
11:33But I just thought it was really disappointing, the fact that Raekwon McMillan, I know he's
11:36busting his butt, but that guy has been a liability against the run.
11:40Obviously you missed Juwan Bentley, but you need a linebacker who can get off of some
11:43of those situations where offensive linemen block you one-on-one.
11:46And you need to at least get in the way and not run yourself out of gaps.
11:50And that's been a consistent issue for Raekwon McMillan.
11:53Keon White, when I see all the explosive runs the Patriots have given up since week three,
11:57they're one of the worst run defenses in the NFL.
11:59Bottom three might be the worst right now, and explosive runs allowed.
12:02Keon White and Raekwon McMillan are always at the point of attack.
12:05Now Keon White has more splash plays, and he at least gives you some back and forth,
12:09hot and cold, although you need more stability.
12:11But Raekwon, again, I really respect the effort he gives.
12:14He hustles so hard when it comes to passing and trying to take things away.
12:18But his effort in the run game just hasn't been good enough.
12:21So the Patriots are 200 yards on the ground, completely unacceptable.
12:24But enough for me.
12:26Here is Gerard Mayo and his thoughts on what happened after the game.
12:29I thought he showed a lot of poise.
12:34I thought he went out there and controlled the huddle, got those guys out of the huddle,
12:37and once again, made some plays.
12:39And it's definitely encouraging.
12:41From a team-wide perspective right now, we let him down.
12:45It was his first game, and I feel like I let him down.
12:48I'm sure all the coaches feel like we let everyone down, and it's gotta be better.
12:52And that's what it is.
12:55We all know, we all watch it.
12:57They do need to be better.
12:57And there's a point to letting Drake May down.
13:01He kind of backtracked a little bit on that, because I don't think that's exactly what
13:04he meant to say.
13:05But when you do have a quarterback in his first game, got those three touchdown passes,
13:10yeah, you're gonna be disappointed.
13:11Even Devon Gotchow mentioned this isn't like other games where usually you don't expect
13:16us to give up 21 points.
13:17Usually when our offense scores 21, we should win the game.
13:20And he mentioned that, and that this was not that kind of game.
13:23So I'm also gonna throw up a clip from Drake May and what he thought about his first NFL
13:29start in live action.
13:31Also, I'm taking Q&As in this one, because as you can see, I'm by myself.
13:35I tried to basically spit everything that I thought at you, hot off the field, hot off
13:39of press conferences.
13:40But if you guys have any questions, we're gonna throw them up and I'll try my best to
13:43answer them.
13:44I still need to watch the tape to have a better idea of what's going on exactly, but I will
13:47do my very best.
13:48Until then, throw those questions in.
13:50Here's what Drake May had to say about his starting debut.
13:53For ourselves today, I think that's the biggest thing.
13:55I think we put defense in bad spots.
13:59And with how good our defense is, that's the least thing we can do.
14:03We can't get them when the ball's in the red zone, give them the other team the ball in
14:08the red zone.
14:09Just makes it hard on them.
14:10And it starts with me, and I think I had some throws back, especially the first interception.
14:17Yeah, but after the touchdown, you feel like coming back in it, come out at halftime, and
14:22there goes another turnover in the red zone.
14:24So just kept on hurting ourselves.
14:27And in this league, these teams are too good to do that.
14:32Yeah, he's absolutely right.
14:35Now, I think we can all give Drake May a little bit of credit, because I know the strip
14:38sack.
14:39That was a tough situation, where Demontre Jacobs, it's a quick throw, quick concept.
14:43He had to get the ball out of his hands fast.
14:45I believe that was a play where Hunter Henry was covered, and he just had to get the ball
14:49out.
14:49I might be mixing up plays, to be totally honest.
14:51But Jackson, I'm actually going to play.
14:53I've been talking about Devon Chaw's interview in the locker room after the game.
15:00I'm going to play that, and then Jackson is going to throw your questions up, and I'll
15:03get to all those as well as I can.
15:05So here's Devon.
15:06It's been tough, it's just, I mean, guys just got to take accountability.
15:10It's just, like, even if you guys think the game was over at halftime or, not halftime,
15:16because the score was 14-7?
15:17Yeah.
15:18I mean, say third quarter.
15:19If you thought the game was over at third quarter, it's really just about just having
15:22pride.
15:23And shit, just don't look like you had pride out there.
15:29I mean, just to really don't know how to win, that's what it boils down to.
15:32It's really just frustrating.
15:34Because I really thought we did a good job in the run game.
15:38They had, like, three wham plays that creased us for a mixing touchdown, a mixing 60-yard
15:45run, and just same old story, man.
15:49I'm just, I don't even know what to say.
15:50Go ahead.
15:51Just talk about your pride in Devon.
15:53Yep.
15:54Can you expound upon that?
15:55I mean, just really just, I mean, even if you think we out the game, it's just, you
16:00know, the offense gave us 21 points.
16:02Even though it was, you know, like, a little slow.
16:04But, you know, usually our defense, the standard, we get 21 points.
16:09The offense don't score.
16:11The opposite offense doesn't score 21 points.
16:13I know it was some tough calls on third down to the referees.
16:16You know, I'm not going to blame, we're not going to blame the refs.
16:17But some third calls they didn't really help us out with early on in the game.
16:21You know, they was like, oh, well, was that really a P.I.?
16:23But they called it, so we got to live with it.
16:26And, you know, we didn't really respond from that.
16:28You know, adversity went up 14-0.
16:30We came back, scored a touchdown.
16:32You know, for me, I thought Drake played well with the circumstances that he had.
16:37You know, I thought he played well.
16:38So, and then when you give us 21 points, we got to stop the other offense from scoring
16:4321 points.
16:44And I even thought CJ Straub, like, he started kind of slow.
16:46He had like 98 passing yards, 88 going into the fourth quarter.
16:49And, you know, he finished with 192.
16:50But it's just like, you know, defense, man, we got to, you know, we got to just figure
16:55out a way, like, to get back to the standard of playing great defense.
16:57You know, it's just, 41 points is embarrassing.
17:02Yeah, it is, in fact, embarrassing.
17:05And like you heard from Devon Gottschall, obviously, there were times in this game where
17:08there were flags that felt like they were ticky-tack.
17:10There were definitely some flags that were missed.
17:12You know, some face mask calls, like the one Antonio Gibson.
17:15I know Jonathan Jones thought that he was held on Joe Mixon's touchdown, or I forget
17:19who exactly the running back was.
17:20I'm sorry.
17:21But on one of the touchdown runs that was bounced, I believe it was Joe Mixon.
17:24But yeah, 41 points.
17:26You don't expect that from the Patriots defense.
17:28If you told me New England was going to score 21 points, I would have thought it was at
17:31least a nail-biter that went right down to the wire, especially considering that's what
17:35the Texans season really has been.
17:37A lot of games that have come down to the final possession or final possessions, the
17:41only really exception was a blowout loss they had to Minnesota.
17:45But again, I'm going to get to your guys' questions.
17:47I'm really excited to answer those, start engaging with y'all, because I hate talking
17:50to a screen.

19:04Let's get to some questions, y'all.
19:05All right.
19:06First one, Old Man Mob.
19:07What's up, buddy?
19:08Should Booty get more playing time, and can he be the 80-20 ball wide receiver the Patriots
19:12have been looking for?
19:14I don't know about 80-20, really, because Booty's got a lot of talent, obviously, but
19:17he's not like one of these 6'3", 210 pound guys.
19:21He's really more in the mold of closer to a Javon Baker.
19:24Let me actually see what Booty's measurables are exactly, so I'm not talking out of my
19:28butt or height and weight.
19:30Yeah, he's 5'11", 205.
19:32You don't really want to be throwing him a ton of jump balls, really.
19:35That said, I would like to see him maybe with more role as an ex-receiver, and I think we
19:40did see some of that, because I noticed in most two-receiver groupings, it wasn't what
19:44we had seen in most weeks, where it was Kayshawn Booty and Kendrick Bourne.
19:48I'm sorry, Kayshawn Booty and Jalen Polk, with Polk as the X and then Kayshawn as the
19:52Z.
19:52It was really more of Kendrick Bourne as the Z, with then Kayshawn Booty at the X.
19:57Now, I'm going to have to go back and see, because I think in three-receiver sets, it
20:00was primarily Jalen Polk as that number one ex-backside receiver.
20:06One thing, I think somebody's going to ask about this, Jalen Polk and his hands.
20:09I'll talk about that more later.
20:10I'll stick to Kayshawn Booty here, but I do think he has the speed that maybe a lot of
20:14the other outside options don't, at least the guys that we expect to have a role.
20:19Jayvon Baker, we all are excited about his talent and what he can be, but he has to get
20:23the coach's trust.
20:24Kayshawn Booty's done that, and really, the confidence he showed after the game, they
20:28were talking about what he's maybe done differently now that he's got a bigger role.
20:32And he's like, I mean, I catch everything.
20:33He's like, I don't know.
20:35I mean, I saw him in the summer.
20:36He catches almost everything.
20:37Not quite everything, but I love the confidence from the young wide receiver.
20:41And finally, having a quarterback who can exploit some of his downfield potential, because
20:45I don't think he's a burner.
20:46You know, he's not a 4-3 guy where he's just going to be blazing by corners.
20:49But I think him and Jalen Polk, to a degree, if you put air under the ball and they can
20:53track it, it's tough on defenders because they want to run with you, but they're also
20:57inclined to look back and try to find the ball.
20:59The second a defensive back looks back, or they're just unsure they can slow down.
21:03And that gives, you know, those four or five guys a bit more of an advantage.
21:07Booty, not really an 80-20 guy.
21:09But I do think right now, I wouldn't be surprised if he was the guy who got the most
21:13snaps for the Patriots receivers.
21:14I really think he has earned a legitimate starting role.
21:17And I don't think that's going to change once KJ Osborne comes back.
21:20All right, Jackson, what else do we got?
21:21Good stuff, old man mob.
21:23I feel like we're going to hear from you again.
21:25Let's see.
21:26Do we have?
21:29Okay, awesome.
21:30What has to happen from here on out for the Patriots to have a successful season?
21:34Oh, that's tough.
21:37So one, they're going to have to figure out some way to put a stable offensive line out
21:43there.
21:43Rod Mayo's mentioned how tough it is to build camaraderie and chemistry when you have a
21:48different offensive line combination every week.
21:50And then when most weeks, it doesn't even stay the same for the entire game, because
21:54obviously, we unfortunately saw Darian Lowe have to leave with an injury gets replaced
21:58by Zach Thomas, who filled in very admirably.
22:00I will say poor guy is really more of a guard.
22:03I don't think he's played tackle since last year against the Bengals, ironically, when
22:07he was on the Rams, and that was a tough outing for him.
22:09I honestly thought that once Darian Lowe went out, they would have Jacobs on the left moving
22:14one year to tackle and then have city.
22:15So at right guard, we ended up once Michael Jordan had to leave for a few snaps.
22:20And then, of course, again, Michael Jordan had to leave for some point.
22:23So you had multiple offensive line combination in the same game.
22:26I think that's going to be one of the biggest elements, because I think the biggest thing
22:29you saw that was missing today was the run blocking.
22:31I asked Hunter Henry why that was, if they were trying to take something away specifically,
22:35or if it was just execution.
22:37He didn't really know.
22:37And it's tough to tell why, because you don't really know what kind of blitzes guys are
22:41sending all the time.
22:42And I'm trying to see a million things.
22:43So that can be tough.
22:44But the run game, I feel like a big part of it was the fact they didn't have a lot of
22:47chemistry up front.
22:49Beyond that, though, offensive line, we know that's got to get corrected.
22:53And then I think you'll see the running backs play better.
22:55I would say defensively and really team wide discipline has to be better.
22:59The penalties.
23:00This is not a team that can beat themselves.
23:02We hear that from them every week.
23:04They know it.
23:04We know it.
23:05Opponents know it.
23:06They cannot afford to beat themselves.
23:08Unfortunately, they did against one of the most penalized teams in the NFL.
23:11In my game preview, if you read it, I said that a clean game could really make the difference
23:15here.
23:15And I think we saw the opposite and we got the opposite in terms of what you would have
23:19wanted the result to be as a Patriots fan.
23:21So discipline has to improve, but also defensively, the run defense.
23:24I think the pass defense for the most part is fine.
23:27Like if teams are able to run the ball, yes, they're going to get their chunks over the
23:29middle.
23:30That's going to happen.
23:31C.J.
23:31Stroud, like Devon Dodge mentioned, I think he went into the fourth quarter, some later
23:35part of the game, but 90 passing yards.
23:37He was picking his spots.
23:38He was converting in some big moments.
23:40Absolutely.
23:41But it's not like C.J.
23:41Stroud's airing it out against you or anything like that.
23:44The run defense needs to scare away from going on the ground like they did last season.
23:50Now, I don't know if that's even an option, to be honest, because you don't have one Bentley.
23:53We don't know when Christian Barmer will be back.
23:55Obviously, he'd be a huge difference maker.
23:57But those two guys, huge, huge up front, the role they play and how hard it is to get them
24:02moved, their leadership, obviously, as well.
24:04Christian Barmer, more from his play on the field.
24:06Jawan Bentley is more of that vocal leader.
24:09And then we don't know what Jabril Peppers' situation is either.
24:12He's a massive guy.
24:13We're like on the touchdown run, the last one, we saw that Marte Mapa was in the slot,
24:16and he got kind of torched a little bit.
24:19He got bodied out there.
24:20That's usually where you would see Jabril Peppers, who is not someone you're going to
24:23move off the ball very easily, especially with a wide receiver.
24:26So I think the run defense really needs to improve.
24:28I think they have to cut the penalties, and I think the offensive line has to find some
24:33way to get chemistry so they can at least be able to lean on the run game and not force
24:37Drake May to drop back 30 plus times like we saw today.
24:41What else?
24:43Oh, should we go to some after this?
24:45We'll go to some Kendrick Bourne audio, too.
24:46We got that for you guys.
24:48Do you think we should call the Giants about Evan Neal for offensive line help?
24:51Yes, call.
24:53I don't think you're going to get a very good response from them because teams are not trying
24:57to give away their good offensive tackles because as we see, they're very hot commodities
25:01and they're very hard to get quality players.
25:05Also, I'm not going to front.
25:06I've not watched like much of any Evan Neal this year.
25:08I've watched enough rough offenses this year.
25:11I'm not trying to put more out of my plate with Evan Neal.
25:14I know he's been up and down a bit in his career, but super talented guy, obviously.
25:17So, yeah, call every team that you know that may be willing to give up an offensive tackle
25:22because I like the Darien Lowe.
25:24I think Demetrius Jacobs is doing his best out there.
25:25And I don't think either one of those guys, Zach Thomas included, is the reason you lost
25:29the game.
25:30But I do think, obviously, that having some kind of stability on the edges is absolutely
25:34crucial.
25:35All right.
25:35So before I get to the next question, I actually do have audio from Kendrick Bourne that I
25:40want to get to really quickly.
25:41So here that is right now.
25:44Are you guys going forward?
25:45Are you guys going forward?
25:46Yeah, he's like a natural leader, like his aura.
25:49He has aura.
25:50So that's important in football.
25:52You know, some people have aura, some people don't.
25:54And he kind of one of those, like he doesn't have to try.
25:56He's just he's that guy.
25:58So like it's important.
25:59You can tell when you see him, like he passed the eye test.
26:03So when he's in the huddle, he like he knows what he's doing and you can feel it.
26:06So it's important for us.
26:09And then Demario Douglas said something similar, where it's just like, yeah, Drake May, like
26:13he's that dude.
26:14And you see it.
26:14Like when he's on the field, I mean, the guy has got zero Steve's when it comes to the
26:18uniform.
26:19I'm sorry, Drake.
26:20It's true.
26:20Is this none?
26:21Yeah, you got to get like some under sleeves or something.
26:24I think he knows that because, you know, Drake kind of looks like a man generated player
26:27out there.
26:28But the dude does have aura when you're throwing them your 50 yard touchdown passes to close
26:32the half when the offense could not put a two minute drive together to save their lives
26:35the rest of the year.
26:37Maybe I'm missing what I don't know.
26:38But yeah, absolutely.
26:39Drake's got that aura.
26:40Now, here is what we got on audio from Kayshaun Booty about his long catch from Drake May
26:46and his first career touchdown.
26:47They going into the second quarter.
26:49We didn't have the momentum from the first couple three and I was back to back to back.
26:53So I was just like, you know, defenses start sitting on routes if we're not throwing it
26:58deep.
26:59So I went to coach and I was like, we need to take a shot like I want the ball.
27:03And that was the opportunity.
27:04And it presented itself.
27:06Drake threw a great ball.
27:07Great pass from him.
27:09And that's actually the second time this season that I can remember a player saying that because
27:14Kayshaun Booty mentioned that he went over the coaches and was like, hey, they're sitting
27:18on routes like we got to do something and get them off.
27:20Kind of reminded me of the first game of the season when Ramondre Stevenson went up to
27:23ABP and was like, we don't need to do outside zone.
27:26They're trying to stop outside zone.
27:27Let's keep with duo.
27:28That's what's working well for us.
27:30At one point, you're like, all right, well, shouldn't the offensive coordinator kind of
27:33have a better feel for that and do that himself.
27:35But sometimes it's also nice to know that an offensive coordinator is willing to listen
27:39to his young players because Kayshaun Booty, he's putting in the work clearly behind the
27:43scenes.
27:43I don't want to disparage him, but it's not like he has much of a track record with his
27:46team where Ramondre Stevenson obviously has been the offense for multiple seasons pretty
27:51much.
27:52So it was kind of cool to hear that Alex Van Pelt was willing to be open minded.
27:55But at the same time, I do wonder why this is the second time we're hearing that a player
27:59had to go to the coaches and say, hey, we need to change something up based on what
28:02the defense has given us.
28:04So I'm going to get to one more question.
28:05And then we are going to hear from our friends over at game time.
28:08If they play like they have for the next 12 weeks, is Gerard AVP Covington's jobs on the
28:13line?
28:13Gerard Mayo, I think is fine.
28:16I think that this, especially given the hand he's been dealt, I'm not trying to excuse
28:20what's been on the field.
28:21I think Gerard Mayo is pretty sick and tired of what he's been seeing on the field from
28:25like he told us pretty much.
28:26And he told the entire team, I forget what the phrasing was.
28:30I don't want to be too flagger, but I basically told them it wasn't good enough.
28:35And that's pretty much exactly what it was.
28:37He did not mince words.
28:38He told us what he told them.
28:40So I think Gerard Mayo is fine.
28:43You know, two or three seasons of this.
28:45Yeah, we're going to have another conversation.
28:46Even two seasons of this, I think would definitely get him on the hot seat pretty quickly.
28:49Alex Van Pelt.
28:52Now with Drake Bay's development, I think that there has got to be a level of respect
28:56of what he's done there because Drake, obviously he has some of the flaws he did before, but
28:59looks much different and much better than he did even earlier this spring.
29:04Same time.
29:05And I don't think the play calling was an issue today.
29:06I really don't.
29:07I think the Patriots wanted to be more run heavy to protect Drake May a little bit.
29:10I was hoping for that as well.
29:12I know Keishon Booty mentioned they needed to be more explosive and
29:16try to get more big plays.
29:18And, you know, to that point, I agree.
29:20But I feel like the big thing, this game was hitting your spots.
29:23But when you're in an early deficit, that's kind of tough.
29:24So I'm not putting this on Alex Van Pelt solely, especially given the offensive line
29:28situation.
29:29I would rather go through the film before I, you know, say anything good or bad about
29:32Van Pelt, even the decision to go forward before halftime.
29:35I've been I got on him last week because I'm saying your offense has no momentum.
29:38What are you doing?
29:39And then even Gerard Mayo said, hey, it's about execution.
29:41It's like against the Seahawks, you know, and even Alex Van Pelt said, I maybe should
29:45I question whether I should have run it on second and two.
29:48This time we saw what I went for.
29:50When you have Drake May obviously increases your margin for error.
29:53So, yeah, I'm not really going to get on AVP.
29:57I think it would take more truly incompetent offense.
30:01The discipline obviously is a problem, but that's kind of a team wide problem as well.
30:05The offensive line was a big part of that.
30:06You had no run game in a rookie quarterback, but that puts you in a tough spot.
30:09Someone to come down too hard on him.
30:11Covington, though, I would say the inconsistencies from this defense.
30:15I don't think he's going to get fired next year.
30:16I think he's a very highly respected coach around the NFL.
30:19And I don't think that, you know, they would just do a one and done kind of year, especially
30:23because in most of these games, I think the defense is good enough.
30:26But it's games like this where you get run up for 200 yards like that cannot be the standard.
30:30And that's not for any defense or any organization, especially this one, where you commit so many
30:35resources like Devon gotcha to make sure that you can stop the run.
30:40That's just unacceptable.
30:42And it's so hard because the injuries like I know Devon gotcha said that was an excuse.
30:45But at the same time, like it is what it is.
30:47And you got backups and key roles.
30:49I know the backups need to prepare like their starters, but their backups really for a reason.
30:53They're not current starters for a reason.
30:56So this is a tough question.
30:57I don't think anybody on the staff, barring like horrendous, horrendous play, I'm talking
31:02like gets to the point at the end of the season where we say, I don't even know if you can
31:05build on this.
31:06I think maybe then, but I just think it's too soon to really say, sorry, that's a cop
31:11out answer.
31:11But that's me being as, you know, real as I can with you.
31:14Maybe I'll feel better or feel worse or better tomorrow after I watch some of the tape.
31:18We will see.
31:19But for now, I'm going to get my other questions ready.
31:23And until then, quick word from our friends over game time.
31:26Be right back.
31:27Levi's stadium at San Francisco 49ers, Patriots versus Niners.
31:31Little is 115 bucks right now on the game time.
31:34Not too bad.
31:34If you're making the trip out there, if you didn't buy your tickets yet, wait a little
31:38bit more, but use game time because you might be able to get an even lower price as, as
31:44kickoff approaches.
31:46Game time is the best ticketing app out there.
31:48We use it all the time.
31:49Our own game viewings, our content viewings, et cetera.
31:53And they have a new feature now called game time picks.
31:55That makes it easier to get tickets to your favorite teams and watch them play live.
32:00It filters out all the fluff and shows you only the incredible deals in great seats.
32:04So you don't have to waste time searching through those thousands of tickets.
32:08They have super deals.
32:09They have awesome deals.
32:09They have great deals.
32:11And again, the app is super easy to use.
32:13You literally just go in, you search Patriots.
32:15I'm doing it right now while we're on here.
32:17Taylor Dolphins at Patriots for the following week could be Drake May's first start, could

32:48What time is it?
32:51All right.
32:52So I saw a couple of comments and I do want to touch on a couple of players.
32:54I haven't really gotten a spotlight yet.
32:56First Marte Mapu.
32:57Now I did mention he was near the point of attack on the last long touchdown run, but
33:01he also the interception.
33:03I've been telling y'all, I've been telling y'all that Marte Mapu's little ball, that
33:07man was going to cause, I'm spitting out here.
33:09It was going to cause some big plays.
33:11And you saw it being able to read the hands.
33:13Some of the defenders in that situation might turn around prematurely.
33:16He knew he wasn't in position to turn around, but he was smart enough to know he needed
33:20to get his hands up because sometimes what a lot of the time happens is a defensive back
33:24or a defender period.
33:25You know, the ball's coming when that receiver's eyes get big.
33:28It's like, Oh, there it is.
33:30I think that's what he saw.
33:31And as the hands were going up, he threw his, puts it up in the air for then Marcus Jones
33:35to recover and get a nicer turnout of, and Marte Mapu got himself a half sack as well
33:40on a blitz.
33:41So, you know, up and down game the past couple of weeks for Marte Mapu.
33:45I think if he's been put in more positions to succeed, you'll see less of the bad and
33:48more of the good.
33:49Love what I've seen from him in coverage last two weeks.
33:51And Ben Brown last I checked, he didn't even give up a pressure.
33:55Now this is a dude who found out he was playing.
33:58I think today was when he found out I shook his hand after the game.
34:02Just being like, Hey dude, that must've been tough on you.
34:04Dude's hand was bloody.
34:05Like he was battling out there.
34:07There may be some things on the tape I see where it's like, Oh yeah, that wasn't pretty.
34:10But for a guy who just joined the team midweek and just found out that he was going to play,
34:15you got to tip your cap to him.
34:16I didn't see any egregiously bad snaps.
34:18I think Drake may and him may have almost had a bad exchange, but they got it under
34:22control.
34:23So really impressed by Ben Brown as well.
34:25Got to give a tip of the cap to Elliott Wolf also.
34:29I understand that the offensive line situation is not good, but when you look at the guys
34:33they even have to put on the field, Zach Thomas to Monterey Jacobs, Nick Leverett wasn't out
34:38there today, obviously, but someone who's going to be key for them moving forward, Michael
34:41Jordan, uh, and then Ben Brown, all of these guys are players that were added by Elliott
34:46Wolf.
34:46Are they all pros and all that stuff?
34:48No, probably not.
34:49You know, are they ever going to be full-time starters?
34:51Probably not.
34:52But the fact that even have bodies to send out there and players that are doing what
34:55they should most of the time, I got to tip my cap to Elliott Wolf because again, I know
35:00the offensive line isn't great, but they're being put in an impossible, impossible position
35:05with like third, fourth.
35:06I know Zach Thomas is the fifth tackle, fifth left tackle they've had this season.
35:11So, you know, tip of the cap there.
35:13Now let's wrap this up with a few more questions.
35:15Do you think they should be the buyers at the trade deadline since Drake showed promise?
35:20This is a tough question.
35:22Philosophically, I'd say they should be selling because I think this, you know, this is a
35:27rebuild year.
35:27You're one in five.
35:28Now, Hunter Henry did mention that he was on a, uh, he was on a charter's team.
35:33I think that started own four and almost made the playoffs.
35:35Really?
35:36It was a tiebreaker.
35:36He said that decided it.
35:38He knows that people aren't quitting yet.
35:40So I, this season isn't over, so I don't think they should quit or anything like that.
35:45At the same time, if you can get a tackle or a receiver, like guys who can make an impact
35:51long-term beyond this season, grow with Drake may maybe help the defense again, long-term.
35:57I'm all for it.
35:58Do not trade for somebody, you know, like a linebacker who can get off blocks or a better
36:03nose tackle like that.
36:04Those aren't the moves you're making.
36:06This is not a season that you need to salvage to the point where you're just getting one
36:09season acquisitions.
36:10That ain't it.
36:11Now, if you, again, if you get some, you know, offensive lineup, defense, whatever, and it's
36:16longer term, I'm all for that.
36:18Because again, this is a rebuild that looks towards the future, but no stop gaps.
36:22That's not the kind of thing you're looking for.
36:25Could we try a cold strange at center once he's healthy?
36:29Ashton for asking this.
36:30Yes, they might because dried Mayo actually mentioned this as a possibility on Friday.
36:35So we did get news a few, a couple of weeks ago.
36:38I believe that cold strangers expected to be back sometime in the season.
36:41I was, I wasn't sure if that was going to be the case.
36:43And even if he was healthy earlier this season, I didn't even know what role there could be
36:47for him.
36:48But now obviously David Andrews is hurt.
36:50You got guys banged up on the offensive line.
36:52So that could create some opportunities for cold strange.
36:55And when asked about center specifically to ride Mayo did say that they do think they've
37:00thought about it.
37:01That's been under consideration.
37:02I had a whole thread actually on Twitter.
37:04You can check that out.
37:05Just look up my account on search cold, strange, but he actually did take snaps at center at
37:10the senior bowl.
37:10I know a lot of people thought that was maybe his best fit in the NFL with his athleticism.
37:16He's, I don't think he's played enough center to really know how to do the protections and
37:19everything extremely well, but if Ben Brown can do it, you know, ghost range had to, I'm
37:23sure he could figure it out and then continue to improve, but he's got the skillset to do
37:26it.
37:27Absolutely.
37:27And given the fact that he's not the biggest guy centers probably where he's best.
37:31So absolutely cold strange could be a center.
37:33Just don't know when he's going to be healthy enough.
37:35And we'll have to see what the situation looks like then.
37:37I want to do one more Jackson.
37:38Yeah.
37:39One more y'all.
37:40Let me know how you guys like this format.
37:42Honestly, I was nervous.
37:43This is kind of fun.
37:44It's like we're having a little chit chat.
37:45I like it.
37:46Okay.
37:47Which is more important from Rin's to this.
37:49That's a cool name, uh, to help Drake or to help Drake main wide receiver or offensive
37:54line.
37:55I would say offensive line.
37:58It has to be as much as I would love to say, get him that X who can win really quickly.
38:03That one-on-one, like at the end of the day, I do think that Drake has the skillset to
38:07elevate the guys around him.
38:08Like we saw it.
38:10Keishon booty and Demario Douglas.
38:11It felt like their talents were kind of wasted until this week where, you know, you knew
38:16the Keishon booty was a bit of a deep threat.
38:18You knew that Demario Douglas could make big plays with the ball in his hands, but so infrequent,
38:22it was so infrequent that he actually had the opportunities to make that happen.
38:26So I think that Drake may can elevate the talent around him, but I think the best case
38:30scenario is making sure he has protection.
38:32Because one, it'll preserve him and he's got the athleticism where if he's got a nice
38:35pocket and everyone's covered, he can use his legs and still make a play.
38:38He can hit tight windows if he needs to and challenge defensive backs when they think
38:42they've got perfect coverage because what's the one thing that beats perfect coverage
38:45class.
38:47Perfect throw.
38:48There we go.
38:48Yeah.
38:49So, um, I, if we're talking draft, that's different because in the draft, everyone's
38:53saying there's no first round tackle there.
38:55I would absolutely rather take a wide receiver just for value.
38:58And because I liked that McMillan very much, um, and also get a second round left tackle,
39:03you know, it's not the worst thing in the world, but if I could have my perennial all
39:07pro at either one of those positions at this point, I think I'd, I'd have to go with a
39:11offensive tackle.
39:13At least a picture of Mike on the screen.
39:15Sorry, Lowe's.
39:15I don't have any pictures of Mike in my wallet anymore.
39:17He told me that wasn't okay.
39:19All right, though.
39:20That was a great time, y'all.
39:22You so much for joining this post game Q and a for the Patriots.
39:2741 to 21 loss to the Houston Texans.
39:30I'll be diving into the film tonight, trying to give you guys a little more perspective
39:33on what exactly happened today.
39:34Uh, but once again, thank you all so much for tuning in.
39:36This was really a blast.
39:37Try to do something like this.
39:38Maybe again in the future with me and Mike.
39:41Uh, but until that next time, everybody take care of yourselves, take care of each other.
39:46We will see you next time.
39:47Peace y'all.
