00:54What time is it?
00:55Game time.
00:56And you know what also time it is?
00:58It's Drake May time.
00:59First, let's do a little bit of business police blotter.
01:07The NFL has placed safety and captain, Jabril Peppers, on the commissioner exempt list following
01:14his arrest over the weekend.
01:15Peppers, a team captain, may not practice or attend games while on the list.
01:21He can't even come into the building.
01:23The 29-year-old was arrested on Saturday morning.
01:26Very serious charges, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation, possession
01:33of a class B substance believed to be cocaine.
01:37Peppers has entered pleas of not guilty.
01:41His next court date is scheduled for November 22nd.
01:45Gerard Mayo talked about it today.
01:47I just want to be clear that really any act of domestic violence is unacceptable for us
01:53as a team.
01:54No matter if you're a player, staff member, we're wholeheartedly against any type of domestic
02:00violence.
02:02He also went on to say, I do think that Jabril has to go through the system, has to continue
02:07to go through a due process, and we'll see how that works out.
02:11So obviously he is not closing the door on him.
02:15Should we get further clarification at his next court date?
02:19It's possible.
02:21In my experience with these things, unless the victim recants, which is possible, that
02:34he's probably not going to be back this season, certainly possibly could be, but the wheels
02:40of justice spin slowly.
02:42I don't think we're going to have to wait for a trial or anything like that.
02:50We've heard from his attorney so that they have video evidence that paint Peppers in
02:57a more favorable light.
02:59We'll have to see all that shakes out, but certainly disappointing for the Patriots.
03:06Certainly one of their leaders, physical guy.
03:10I was just touting him a couple of weeks ago, and Gerard Mayo did the same thing as
03:14well with his hustle and tackle on the next to last play against the San Francisco 49ers.
03:21He's just that kind of player, and the Patriots keep losing those type of players, whether
03:27it's Juwan Bentley or David Andrews and now Peppers.
03:32Certainly disappointing and just another blow, so to speak, with the season.
03:37But aside from all that, the Patriots have pulled the lever.
03:43They have announced that Drake May will start, Jacoby Bursette will go to the bench for Sunday's
03:50game against the Houston Texans.
03:54Gerard Mayo said today, I think now Drake gives us the best chance to win now and going
03:59forward.
04:00He's been getting better every single week.
04:02As I've said before, at the end of training camp, he actually was training at a very high
04:06rate that has continued through the early part of the season.
04:10So it was solely my decision to make this choice.
04:14He was asked about whether this was part of the plan, whether the plan was expedited.
04:20He said, I wouldn't say the plan was expedited again.
04:24The end of training camp, he was training up and that never slowed down.
04:28So at this point, he gives us the best chance to win.
04:32He did also, Gerard went on to say that Elliott and ownership, all of us were on board with
04:39the change.
04:40I'm not really sure why, I mean, I understand why ownership would be involved, but I mean,
04:49we just heard from Gerard Mayo, I don't know, a week or two ago, talk about how ownership
04:56has basically left him and Elliott alone, made it sound like he barely even sees them
05:02or talks to them.
05:03And now all of a sudden they're involved in this decision, or at least they're being appraised
05:09of it.
05:10I don't really understand the need for that other than I do think that ownership was involved
05:15in this decision in some way, shape or form.
05:21As to the decision itself, and we'll get into a little bit, Drake May, is he ready?
05:29Is this a great opponent for him to be going against?
05:32We'll talk about that in a little bit, but let me just say, and I wrote this and sort
05:39of talked about it on Failure Unmasked the other day, when the news came down, I was
05:43on air when the news came down.
05:47This doesn't sit very well with me.
05:51I was all on board for the plan.
05:54First of all, let's go back to the beginning.
05:56I was on board with them drafting Drake May third overall.
06:00All the way through, I have never had any doubts that he has the type of traits from
06:07his arm strength, athletic ability, build.
06:09Would you like his hands to be a little bit better for a Northeast team?
06:14Yes, but we'll have to see how that goes.
06:17We'll certainly get that opportunity for the rest of the season.
06:23I think he's very raw, I think he's very inexperienced compared to other guys in his
06:30draft class who have been playing and, on the whole, doing a good job, typical sort
06:37of rookie season.
06:38Other than Jaden Daniels, start slow and start to make progress.
06:43You're hoping for the same thing with Drake May.
06:46I mean, I would have been fine, I would have felt better had they been able to push this
06:54off to, say, mid-season, second half of the season, when it was clear the Patriots were
07:01out of contention.
07:03You can make the argument that at one and four, they're out of contention right now,
07:06and that's fine.
07:09I wanted the Patriots to have a plan and stick to the plan, and it seemed like every week
07:13we were hearing, like, you know, all right, they're sticking to their plan, which I was
07:18very happy about.
07:19I did not want the Patriots to do what the Jacksonville Jaguars did when they drafted
07:24Blake Bortles, and Blake Bortles maybe never would have been a great NFL quarterback.
07:30He certainly had all the physical skills, I don't know if he had it mentally.
07:35I think Drake May definitely has the intangibles, the smarts, the traits, his upbringing, his
07:44competitiveness.
07:47I think all that stuff is off the charts with Drake May, and that's why I was all on board
07:51with him being the third overall pick.
07:54Now, I did have my draft order, Kayla Williams, Jaden Daniels, and Drake May.
07:59If it was Jaden Daniels and Drake May, I would have taken Jaden Daniels.
08:04Kayla Williams, the only question, which I don't know the answer to, and the Bears
08:08don't even know the answer to is, is his makeup what you need to be that guy, to be one of
08:17the elite quarterbacks?
08:18Certainly, there's a lot of questions about that.
08:20Jaden Daniels, I had fewer questions.
08:22With Jaden, it was more physical and whether he could take a beating given his size, and
08:29a six-game sample size is not going to tell you.
08:31It's going to be years.
08:32I mean, RG3 was Rookie of the Year and over Andrew Luck.
08:41What ultimately did him in was injuries, along with some personality things with him.
08:52All on board on Drake May.
08:53My evaluation coming out of college was similar to a lot of guys, whether it's Greg Cosell
08:58or Dan Orlovsky or whoever.
09:02Loved the traits, loved the flashes on film, definitely green, inexperienced, undertrained.
09:10I would have loved to have spent upwards of a season laying that foundation, retraining
09:16him.
09:17So, in a similar fashion to Patrick Mahomes.
09:21That's ideally what I wanted for Drake May, but everybody's different.
09:24I mean, Drake might learn faster than anybody.
09:28He might be picking up, whether it's his footwork, I definitely would like to see him
09:33over time.
09:34And that's not something that's going to happen in one offseason.
09:38Tighten up his motion, which I do think is too long, but that's something that can be
09:42worked on.
09:45And I just thought, especially considering this offense and that Alex Van Pelt has said,
09:53you need to operate from under center in this offense.
09:59Drake has a long ways to go in terms of that.
10:02I don't expect him to be under center very much, if at all.
10:06I just don't think he's very comfortable with that.
10:08I think every opportunity that we've seen him under center, it's been an adventure.
10:14And it's not just the center, it's him as well.
10:18But that being said, and this is part of where the Patriots are, I think the plans
10:25that they had for this season, for this offense, that Alex Van Pelt had for this offense, have
10:30been thrown out the window.
10:32All the stuff that we saw them working on in the offseason, the wide zone, the boot
10:36action, all that stuff has gone away because they can't block it and they don't have the
10:41athletes up front.
10:43Could that change a little bit with May as the quarterback?
10:47It's possible.
10:49He'd certainly be much better on the boot actions and things like that, just because
10:53of his speed, where he can threaten the outside, but also his ability to flip the hips is way
10:59better than Jacoby Bursette.
11:01But this, from a schematic and scheme standpoint, this might be a good fit, a better fit than
11:11say if Jacoby Bursette was out there and running what Alex Van Pelt visualized for his system.
11:19That is under center and all that stuff, the wide zone and the boot and stuff like that.
11:23They just don't do that anymore.
11:25Their best runs are duos inside and you see them pulling guards and it's more like the
11:31traditional Patriots offense.
11:34And I do think that that style of offense is more conducive to the shotgun or pistol
11:39or whatever they decide to do with Drake May.
11:43Whereas if the Patriots were humming with the wide zone and Van Pelt scheme with Bursette
11:50as far as operating it.
11:52I'm just talking about like, you know, if in that scenario, if Bursette was the one
11:57holding them back, that the runs were there and the boot action was there, but Bursette
12:03just couldn't do it.
12:05I think that would be a harder fit with Drake May.
12:08So in the current state, the Patriots current state of offense, do I think he can operate
12:14this?
12:15Yeah, I do.
12:18So but, you know, back to the decision itself and, you know, like I said, I don't know if
12:24I finished my thought, but, you know, I viewed Drake May and Bortles similar in terms of
12:31prospects.
12:32I may had a much higher ceiling because of intangibles, but in terms of the athlete,
12:38they were sort of inexperienced.
12:42You know, the Jaguars surprised everybody by drafting him.
12:45I don't know.
12:46It was in the top 10, maybe even top.
12:47I think it was around like six and shocked everybody.
12:52You know, I think I had a more in sort of the teens type of things, but, you know, they
12:58saw the physical traits in a somewhat similar decision that the Patriots made.
13:02They saw the physical traits and they said, we're going to take him.
13:05And the GM at the time, Dave Caldwell, said when they drafted Blake Bortles, he's not
13:10playing his rookie year.
13:12We are going to build him up.
13:14We're going to train him correctly.
13:15He is not going to play.
13:17Guess what?
13:18With Chad Henney, a quarterback, their version of Jacoby Bursette, the Jaguars started oh
13:22and three oh and four Blake Bortles started now.
13:26He did take them to an AFC championship game and might have beaten the Patriots if if a
13:32certain fumble call went the Jaguars way.
13:38But you know, that was more about the running game and the defense with that team.
13:42He made a few plays.
13:44But the fact of the matter is, is, you know, a quote unquote franchise quarterback.
13:49He was out of the league in six years.
13:51And I just worried about that with the Patriots.
13:54I just I said from the beginning.
13:58You take Drake May.
13:59That's fine.
14:00And I don't care if he doesn't start until year two.
14:02That does not matter to me.
14:04It doesn't matter to me at three overall.
14:06Not one bit.
14:07As long as you get the guy and you believe he's the guy and you train him up to be the
14:11guy.
14:12I'm fine waiting a year.
14:13I don't care about wasting a year on a rookie deal or anything like that.
14:17Never cared anything about that.
14:18The development of Drake May was first and foremost.
14:24The Patriots said they had a plan.
14:25I thought they were sticking to the plan.
14:27To me, this is not the plan to start him week five against the Houston Texans with a with
14:33a one in four team with an offensive line that that has been as bad as the Patriots
14:39have been.
14:40Now, it was a little bit better on Sunday against the Dolphins, who aren't exactly challenging
14:46up front.
14:47Certainly not without Jalen Phillips.
14:48Yeah, it was better.
14:49You know, I'll give them that.
14:51And it looks like this group with Darian Lowe and Michael Jordan, who probably has
14:58been their best offensive lineman so far, and Nick Leverett certainly has challenges
15:03in this game.
15:04I think he's a better player than that.
15:06How good?
15:07I don't know.
15:08A win back at right guard still doesn't look great.
15:11My question is conditioning seems to wear down.
15:15And Demontre Jacobs at right tackle has some rough reps, gave up a lot of pressure.
15:20But on the whole, I would say it was pretty decent for a guy who's never really played
15:24there in his first game.
15:25So there is hope that this this offensive line, which played all I don't know, 75 snaps,
15:32whatever it was, 60 snaps, that this can be their unit that they go forward with and and
15:40figure it out.
15:42But look, the the Patriots are one in four at this point.
15:53You know, what doesn't sit well with me is they made this decision coming off a game
15:58and we'll talk about this more in a minute, where I thought the loss to the Dolphins 15
16:04to 10 against a bumbling Dolphins crew that was throwing up all of the all over themselves
16:10again multiple times.
16:13To me, that loss was about the coaches.
16:14It was about Gerard Mayo is about Alex Van Pelt.
16:17It was some about Covington special teams, you know, wasn't great.
16:23And to me, this reeks of a panic situation that that, you know, a Patriots team that
16:29if they were better coached, if they were more buttoned up and what they do, they would
16:35be three or two at this point and tied for the division lead.
16:38And we wouldn't be talking about Drake May, but they botched the end of the Seattle game,
16:42botched the end of the first half of the Seattle game when Gerard Mayo gave Seattle three points
16:47that would have been handy, would have been advantageous to the Patriots later on in that
16:51game.
16:54You know, they botched that game.
16:56The Miami game was just a complete debacle in my mind.
17:00And I just think scapegoating to Kobe Brissett was just wrong.
17:07I mean, look, did he play well?
17:09No.
17:10But the fact of the matter is he led them on a scoring drive.
17:13It was part of a scoring drive that should have had a touchdown with a go ahead touchdown
17:18with a minute left to Jalen Polk.
17:20But the rookie now, was it a perfect throw?
17:24No.
17:25Was it a good throw?
17:26No.
17:27But it was good enough.
17:28I mean, there's like four or five yards when he touches the ball between him and the end
17:33line.
17:34And all of a sudden, Jalen Polk decides to scissor kick his legs and he can't get both
17:38feet inbounds.
17:40If he catches that ball, I don't think they're making this move to Jacobi Brissett.
17:46Certainly I don't think they're, to Drake May.
17:49Certainly they're not making this move if the coaching staff was up to snuff and delivered
17:57winnable games against the Seahawks, against the Dolphins.
18:02And so in that way, it does not sit well.
18:08It just seems like this coaching staff doesn't know what they're doing.
18:12They're grasping at straws and they are looking to Drake May to basically save their hides.
18:21And I don't like that.
18:23And I don't think, I'm not going to say it's unfair to Jacobi Brissett.
18:26I'm sure he's taken a lot of hits, but he's also making $8 million a year and he knew
18:30the situation here and he has not played well the last two weeks.
18:35And after the 49ers game, after reviewing the film, I said, it's, he was a detriment.
18:41He was a, he was one of the top reasons why the Patriots lost that game.
18:46If it happens again, two straight weeks, then Maywatch is full steam ahead.
18:53And Jacobi did not play well in that game.
18:56He was my lowest graded player again on offense.
18:59And so on film, statistically, analytics, what have you, is this decision justified?
19:07Yes.
19:08But I just think that considering the coaching blunders and Jalen Polk's inability to get
19:16two feet down on a catchable ball to win the game are more responsible for the Patriots
19:23being one and four than the quarterback.
19:26So that's sort of where I am on that.
19:31Let me tell you about prize picks.
19:33Prize picks is America's number one daily fantasy sports app with over 5 million active
19:37members.
19:38Prize picks is the easiest and most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports.
19:42All you do is pick more or less on two to six player stat projections and watch the
19:47winnings roll in like they did the two previous weeks for me.
19:50You can now win up a hundred times your money on prize picks with as little as four correct
19:55picks.
19:56You know, look, so I had a two week winning streak.
19:59It did not happen this week.
20:01I told you I did not feel confident about this week.
20:06We'll have to see whether that changes for the Texans.
20:09I will be back later in the week, hopefully with Nick who's traveling right now, and hopefully
20:15we can get back on the winning side.
20:18But I'm confident that'll happen.
20:20Download the prize picks app today and use code CLNS and get $50 instantly when you play
20:24$5.
20:26That's code CLNS on prize picks to get $50 instantly when you play $5.
20:31You don't even have to win to receive the $50 bonus.
20:34It's guaranteed.
20:35Prize picks run your game.
20:38Okay, so let's talk about Drake May and his readiness.
20:46And I guess we can start with the decision.
20:48You know, I don't like how it went down.
20:51Does that mean that this is a bad decision?
20:54No, I'm not.
20:55No, it really is.
20:59I think that he was going to play at some point, and from everything I've heard, from
21:06everything we've heard, the kid has been a quick learner.
21:09Now, I will point out that I think Gerard Mayo, so I said, I think it was like a week
21:15ago that I heard from people inside the building that they thought Drake May was a little bit
21:25more of a ways off than I think people.
21:28I think it was after the 49ers game.
21:31People were like, oh, we need to start him.
21:34Of course, this has been an every week thing, just about certainly since the Jets game.
21:44And I was told that he wasn't quite ready, that there were some operation issues, just
21:51the basics of operating the system that deemed him not quite ready.
22:00In terms of when he would be ready, I have no clue.
22:03But Mayo sort of addressed this today when he said, where have you seen Drake's biggest
22:08growth this season over the last five weeks?
22:11Mayo said, just operating the huddle, I think it starts right there, getting the call, getting
22:15in the huddle, getting out of the huddle, going out there and executing the play.
22:20That's kind of what I was talking about.
22:23Sounds like he's improved in that area, at least enough where the coaches are like, okay,
22:27he's at an acceptable place right now.
22:30We'll have to take their word for it.
22:33We shall see.
22:37So they're starting Drake May.
22:39I think that I have no prediction on what he's going to do.
22:43I have no clue whether he's ready or not.
22:49What I do know is that, and this is similar to what we saw in the preseason and what we
22:54talked about and even the Jets game when he appeared, Drake May is a very good athlete
23:01and with a very big arm and he can really run.
23:06So because of that, he's going to make some splash plays in every game.
23:13It's the other plays that you worry about.
23:15Is there going to be consistency?
23:17Is he going to read things outright?
23:19Is he going to get confused by anything that he says?
23:23People are looking to Drake May to elevate a Patriots operation that isn't great.
23:31I would say the coaching isn't great on the offensive side of the ball.
23:36The offensive line we know is shaky and the weapons aren't great and they're young and
23:41kind of raw.
23:43Pretty much similar to where he was at North Carolina a year ago with offensive coordinator
23:49change that was not good, made it a mess.
23:52The offensive line was kind of a mess.
23:55His receivers, he didn't have his top receivers, Vontaze Walker or whatever his name is, had
24:04to deal with eligibility issues.
24:06He had lost some guys in the draft.
24:07So to me, it's a very similar situation that Drake May is walking into with the Patriots
24:16similar to his last year at UNC.
24:20The good part about that is this is not a quarterback who needs everything perfect to
24:25operate and he's not used to that.
24:27He's never really had that.
24:28So that's good.
24:33He's used to what he's going to encounter with the Patriots.
24:39As opposed to, say, Mac Jones, who probably needed a little bit more of perfect situations,
24:45Drake May doesn't need that.
24:48Now, that being said, Drake May wasn't great his last season at North Carolina.
24:53So you can't say, like, Patriots fans are hoping Drake May is going to elevate a suboptimal
25:00operation.
25:02He didn't elevate a suboptimal operation at UNC.
25:06Now, he's a year older.
25:09He's around professional players.
25:10He's around professional coaches.
25:12Can that also help him?
25:13Yeah, absolutely.
25:16But you just worry about the consistency and I don't really look.
25:20They made their decision.
25:23The coaches know better.
25:24I have no clue what he's doing on the practice field and I don't really believe any reports
25:29about these guys or these players are saying this and these coaches are saying that.
25:36It's practice.
25:37I've talked to enough NFL coaches and certainly a lot lately asking them about, you know,
25:42what do you think about this and that and they're just like, practice doesn't matter.
25:46I mean, if somebody's doing something well in practice when they're not really in pads
25:51and things like that, and this goes to the preseason with Drake May, Drake May was a
25:56seven on seven Hall of Famer.
26:00When the pass rush and the pads went on, that's when he struggled a bit more.
26:06But you know, I look, they made their decision.
26:10You know, I expect him to struggle.
26:12I expect him to bring a lift for a game or two.
26:16I would expect that and I think he'll make enough plays that I think will certainly make
26:22the Patriots more entertaining and fun to watch.
26:26I don't care if he throws, I don't care about turnovers.
26:29I don't care about sacks.
26:32You know, I just want to see him get out there and get experience and get after an adjustment
26:39period.
26:40I want to see him start to get incrementally better as the season goes along and I have
26:45hopes for that.
26:46I have high hopes for that.
26:48You know, as far as the Texans this week, a lot is going to be made about their pass
26:53rush, which is really good.
26:57You know, I was just watching some of their film.
26:59I will say they are really fast on film.
27:02I think that's going to be a big bit of a shock for Drake May.
27:07I think that was a little bit of a shock against the Jets.
27:09You also have to remember, so you know, he's doing quote unquote great in practice.
27:17That's against a Patriots defense.
27:18Yes, they show a variety of things, not as much as they used to.
27:24Not as much as he would have seen in the summer.
27:26I think injuries are partly to do with that, but we're also talking about a very slow Patriots
27:32defense that has gotten slower by the week with the injuries to, you know, Kyle Duggar,
27:38Jabril Pepper situation, Juwan Bentley, you know, all that stuff.
27:43So I think from what I've seen on film so far of the Texans, I think that Drake May
27:50is going to, he's going to have to gear up his speed to be ready for this.
27:55And I think it's, you know, it's a situation, it's incumbent upon Alex Van Pelt to figure
28:00out a way to get his feet wet in the game and not to put too much on him early and let
28:06him get adjusted to the speed and then sort of go from there.
28:10And you know, when you're dealing with these young quarterbacks, something else that is
28:15incumbent on Alex Van Pelt, who I haven't been enamored with so far watching his scheme
28:20and certainly the execution of the scheme by the Patriots.
28:24There were some, there were some route issues in this past game, which weren't great and
28:29I think led to some poor plays by Jacoby Brissett.
28:35You know, it's incumbent upon Alex Van Pelt to, he needs to determine what Drake May can
28:42and can't do right now.
28:45And he needs to, I don't care if it's simple, I don't care if they have, you know, five
28:52to seven plays that you know that he can execute.
28:58You can dress them up in different ways and you can get to them different ways, but fundamentally
29:02they're the same type of plays.
29:05And Alex Van Pelt is going to have to figure that out and put Drake May in those situations.
29:13And I don't care if they have to do it the whole game against the Texans, I don't care
29:15if the Texans get it figured out.
29:17But what you can't do is all of a sudden get into a game and put Drake May in a position
29:24where he's uncomfortable with the play calls that he's not used to them.
29:30So you know, you'll also often hear, I heard Josh McDaniels talking about this on Julian
29:36Edelman's podcast when he was asked a little bit about Drake May and you know, he talks
29:40about like buckets.
29:42And you know, when you're a young quarterback, you're dealing with young quarterbacks, that
29:49bucket's pretty small.
29:50It's like a coffee cup size, but you got to figure out what's in their bucket and stay
29:55there and then you slowly expand it as you go along.
30:00So I would look for the Patriots to do that.
30:03I think they're going to take advantage of his legs.
30:05I do think that's an advantage for them, especially, you know, these defenses could
30:10blitz and tee off on Jacoby Brissett because they knew where he was going to be.
30:14And he couldn't really elude anybody, even though he thinks he can.
30:18Drake May is a different beast.
30:20You know, he'll be able to get to the outside on some guys, he'll be able to make some plays
30:24with his legs.
30:26One thing from watching the Bills-Texans game, and remember this Texans defense made Josh
30:31Allen go 9 of 30.
30:34So basically, if Drake May can do anything better than that, that's pretty good.
30:39Of course, you know, the Texans were getting geared up for the Bills.
30:43I don't know how much they're going to be geared up for this.
30:47But I will say one thing going against Drake May and the Patriots in this matchup against
30:52the Texans is they just faced Josh Allen, who, look, Drake May's not Josh Allen.
30:58They're hopeful he's going to be, hopefully, Josh Allen light when he's a little bit more
31:03developed.
31:05But the Texans clearly had a plan, a lot of spying, how they rushed Josh Allen, where
31:12they worried about his athletic ability.
31:14So they just came off learning that, executing that in a game to a high level.
31:20And I assume they're going to use the same sort of plan, probably just move it over to
31:25this week.
31:27And that makes it a little bit less likely that Drake May is going to be able to use
31:32his legs effectively in this game.
31:34But it's part of what he does.
31:37It's definitely in his bucket at this point.
31:40So I still expect him to do that.
31:43Let me tell you about game time.
31:45It's that time of year.
31:46It's football.
31:47It's getting cool out.
31:50I got to be at a football game, whether it's high school, college, or pro.
31:53For college and pro, I go check out the game time app to check out their tickets.
31:59Game time has a new feature called Game Time Picks that makes getting picks to see your
32:02favorite teams play live even easier.
32:05Game Time Picks filters out the fluff to show you only incredible deals on great seats so
32:10you don't have to waste time searching through thousands of tickets.
32:13Love all-in pricing.
32:15Toggling this feature will show the total up front, none of those annoying surprise
32:19fees at checkout, which I hate.

32:44What time is it?
32:45Game time.
32:46Okay, real quickly because now with the Drake May news, this seems like years ago that they
32:54lost to the Dolphins on Sunday.
32:59To me, like I said earlier, to me, their loss to the Dolphins to me was solely on the coaching.
33:07From Alex Van Pelt's game plan, which was not nearly run heavy enough, the Dolphins
33:13entered with the 26 DVOA against the run.
33:17They had Tyler Huntley at quarterback.
33:19They were scoring less than the Patriots.
33:22This is a game and look, I'm going to put all of this on Gerard Mayo.
33:28He is the head coach and he is a CEO head coach, so it's not like he's busy game planning
33:33on defense.
33:34He has Demarcus Covington for that.
33:36He's not game planning on offense or special teams.
33:38Gerard Mayo is there to oversee everything in this organization, including his coaches
33:43and the game plans and for the Patriots and basically what you get, and this is what Bill
33:49Belichick would do with the Patriots with his coaches on Monday, Monday evening, sort
33:54of after they put the last game to bed, Bill Belichick would instruct his coaches how each
34:03of their game plans should go this week.
34:07He would tell them exactly like, this is how we win this game, and I'm just trying
34:14to find the part where I said this.
34:21This is what Mayo should have told Van Pelt going into this game.
34:24We're breaking in a new offensive line.
34:26Let's go run heavy at least to start this game to get their feet under them.
34:30Miami's run defense is not very good.
34:33They're scoring 11 points a game.
34:34Tyler Huntley is their quarterback.
34:36They are very mistake prone.
34:38We shouldn't have to do much offensively to win this game, probably 16, 17 points.
34:44Control the ball, play field position, and don't turn it over.
34:48If we do what we did against the Bengals, that should be good enough.
34:51I want a 65-35 run pass split.
34:54I don't care if we don't throw 10 passes in this game.
34:57The Dolphins are soft.
34:58Let's be physical with them, pound them, and see how the game goes.
35:04Guess what happens?
35:05The Patriots come out, they run for seven yards, and then they go pass, pass, sack,
35:08sack.
35:10In the first half, the Patriots dropped back 17 times, including penalties.
35:14They rushed seven times.
35:15And one of their rushes included a 33-yard touchdown run that was blocked
35:20beautifully by the offensive line.
35:21And did that in having a lead, a 7-3 lead, and then what was it?
35:2710-3, 10-6, 10-9.
35:29They had the lead the whole game.
35:32Did Gerard Mayo get on this headset and say, Alex, the Dolphins have missed a field goal.
35:40We blocked one of their punts.
35:41They had a field goal snap that was a ground ball.
35:47They were inside the 20, and they snapped the ball early.
35:51For the second week in a row, that was a 22-yard loss, took them out of field goal range.
35:55Like, Gerard Mayo should have just said, don't throw the ball.
36:00Just pound them, pound the ball away, which is exactly what Mike McDaniel did at halftime
36:07after his mistake from first half.
36:09He said, all right, screw this.
36:10We can't do X, Y, and Z.
36:12Guess what?
36:13We're just going to run the ball.
36:14Tyler Huntley and the Dolphins scored on all three of their second-half possessions.
36:21So there was that with the offense, along with the decision before halftime.
36:28They run for, what was it, eight yards, and then they throw, throw, and basically gave
36:36Miami a field goal, or at least attempt at a field goal before halftime.
36:42At the end of the game, they get down there, get on the 12-yard line with about a minute
36:46and a half left, all three timeouts, and Gerard Mayo should have been on this headset to ABP
36:52and saying, this is going to be the last possession of the game, so do what you have to do, which
36:58would include running on first down at least.
37:01You have all four downs.
37:03You need a touchdown.
37:04You have all four downs.
37:06You have 12 yards.
37:07You have three timeouts.
37:08The Patriots should not have had to throw the ball there, and guess what they did?
37:11They threw four times.
37:14Be that as it may, Jacoby Bursette delivers a decent pass to Jalen Polk, and he doesn't
37:19get his feet inbounds.
37:22So that's a little bit on the offense.
37:24I also want to point out that Gerard Mayo said a couple things which I completely disagreed
37:30with.
37:31He said, after the game, he said, I think there's no question we're tough, but we just
37:35have to get better from an execution standpoint.
37:38Tough?
37:39I mean, look, I'm not going to say they're not tough, but does a tough team let the Miami
37:45Dolphins run for almost 200 yards against them when they have Tyler Huntley, a quarterback?
37:52Just the week before, the Dolphins' running backs had 66 yards on 22 carries against the
37:57Tennessee Titans.
37:58They couldn't leak a drop running the game.
38:00All of a sudden, they play the Patriots, and they can run all over them, and that's a tough
38:03team?
38:04No, that's not a tough team.
38:07Tough teams run the ball, and they stop the run to start with.
38:13The Patriots didn't run enough.
38:16Jacoby Bursette should not be attempting 34 passes in a game where the Patriots basically
38:21led throughout the game.
38:23That's just horrible coaching and decision-making, and that starts with the head coach.
38:29The run defense was terrible.
38:32They were not tough enough up front.
38:34Devon Godshall wore down as the game went on.
38:38Him and Marte Mapu gave up the game-winning touchdown.
38:43So there's that.
38:44And then there was also this.
38:45On Monday, in the aftermath of the game, Gerard Mayo said, I thought we played well enough
38:51defensively and on special teams to win the football game.
38:57Sorry, I'm just looking for the part where I wrote about this on BSJ.
39:10What game was he watching?
39:11What is he talking about?
39:13Yeah, you can look globally at, oh, they only allowed 15 points, but that's also like taking
39:20how many points?
39:21I mean, if the Dolphins were a competent unit, if Tyler Huntley could hit wide-open guys
39:27that were out there and get the ball out of his hands, the Dolphins probably score like
39:3130 points in that game.
39:33Just because you only gave up 15 points doesn't mean that's good defense, especially not when
39:37you're going against Tyler Huntley in the state of the Miami Dolphins offense, which
39:43was scoring 11 points a game.
39:45All of a sudden, they score 15 against you and certainly should have scored in the 20s.
39:51Like I said, the defense allowed, so the Miami running backs rushed 35 times.
39:57Remember, Jacoby Brissett dropped back, I think he had 36, including sacks plus penalties,
40:03it was like 40.
40:04Miami rushed 35 times, their running backs, for 184 yards, including seven straight times
40:09to take the lead with their only touchdown.
40:14The Dolphins and Huntley scored in all three of their second-half possessions.
40:17And then there's also this, no one has talked about this, but the defense basically handed
40:25Miami six of their points.
40:28Because if you recall, at the end of the first drive, the Dolphins had third and 17 from
40:32the New England 49, okay?
40:35The Patriots just, what, need to hold them to, I don't know, six, seven yards and they
40:42probably don't kick a field goal, they probably punt.
40:45But guess what the Patriots did?
40:47They had a conservative play call, they gave up easy 13 yards to Johnnie Smith, and Jason
40:52Sanders, because of that yardage, hit a 54-yarder.
40:55To me, I put that on the defense, that's not good defense, that's not playing well enough
40:59to win, that's conceding three points.
41:02Near the end of the third quarter, the Dolphins had third and 13 at the New England 40, right
41:07sort of on the edge of field goal range.
41:09Now, I don't know if they did this because they were going against tendency, because
41:12the Patriots, and we've seen other teams use this, specifically the Seahawks, and they
41:18even talked about this, the Patriots are a very high-pressure team on the edge of field
41:24goal range.
41:25So I don't know if they just did this to screw their tendencies, but it was an epic fail
41:29because Christian Gonzalez, who played great coverage pretty much all day against Tyreek
41:34Hill and Jalen Waddell, was asked to play conservative, and he's like 10 yards off
41:39of Jalen Waddell, and he catches an easy 11-yard reception, and that leads to a 47-yard field
41:44goal.
41:45Again, that's good defense, that's good enough?
41:47I disagree.
41:49And the special teams were good?
41:51Seriously, what game is Gerard Mayo watching?
41:56Brendan School had a great punt block, okay?
41:58Again, they got Jake Bailey, that's like two years in a row.
42:01Obviously they know something from when he was here.
42:03But Joey Sly missed a 33-yard field goal.
42:07Bryce Berenger had three touchbacks that affected field position.
42:10In a game like this, field position should have been like, I don't know, third on the
42:14list in terms of things we have to do to win this game.
42:18And Berenger was terrible in this game.
42:20And he also had a shank punt that was a net of 31 with the return that gave Miami the
42:28ball at the New England 44 with 55 seconds before halftime.
42:34Luckily, that's when they had the ground ball snapped, but that's not good special teams.
42:40So I don't know what Mayo's talking about.
42:43I don't know what games he's watching, because what he should have said was, starting with
42:51the coaches and starting with me, it was not good enough against Miami.
42:56And he probably just should have fell on the sword.
42:58But of course, they don't want to take any blame for anything.
43:02He should have said, I lost this game for the team.
43:07We did not have the right game plans.
43:08We didn't make the right decisions.
43:10Nobody was perfect in this game, starting with me.
43:14And that is not going to happen again.
43:16I am going to learn from that.
43:17Did we hear that?
43:18No.
43:19What we got was Jacoby Bursette got thrown under the bus.
43:22And he was made the scapegoat for this game, which was just wrong on so many different
43:27fronts, least of which was the Jalen Polk touchdown, that if Jalen Polk gets two feet
43:33down and they win that game, they're not making this move.
43:36I know certain people, and I know are reporting, oh, yeah, it wouldn't have mattered, like
43:41blah, blah, blah, bull crap.
43:44You can't bench a guy who let a game winning drive like that.
43:48I mean, look, it wasn't good.
43:50But I mean, how many times have we seen this, you know, Tom Brady or any other quarterback
43:55that like, all right, man, he stinks.
43:57He's throwing interceptions, taking sacks.
44:01But at the end of the day, guess what?
44:02I mean, look, Patrick Mahomes is doing this every week.
44:06He hasn't been really good this year.
44:07But guess what?
44:08At the end of the day, he delivers.
44:09He delivers a victory.
44:10If Jacoby Bursette delivered a victory, I don't think they're making this choice.
44:14So that's sort of my synopsis on the Miami game.
44:18But you know, be that as it may, it's now May Day.
44:22I'm looking forward to it, which is certainly going to be more interesting.
44:25It's going to be more things to write about, more film to analyze.
44:29And you know, Giardi and I are going to bring it to you all on BSJ.
